Cardiopulmonary loading in motocross riding
2007
The present study was designed to examine physiological responses during motocross riding. Nine Finnish A-level motocross riders performed a 15-min ride at a motocross track and a test of maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) in the laboratory. Cardiopulmonary strain was measured continuously during the ride as well as in the VO2max test. During the ride, mean VO2 was 32 ml x kg(-1) x min(-1) (s = 4), which was 71% (s = 12) of maximum, while ventilation (V(E)) was 73% (s = 15) of its maximum. The relative VO2 and V(E) values during the riding correlated with successful riding performance (r = 0.80, P < 0.01 and r = 0.79, P < 0.01, respectively). Mean heart rate was maintained at 95% (s = 7) of its…
Muscle damage induced by stretch-shortening cycle exercise
1998
Strenuous stretch-shortening cycle exercise was used as a model to study the leakage of proteins from skeletal muscle. The analysis included serum levels of creatine kinase (S-CK), myoglobin (S-Mb), and carbonic anhydrase (S-CA III). Blood samples from power- (N=11) and endurance-trained (N=10) athletes were collected before, 0, and 2 h after the exercise, which consisted of a total of 400 jumps. The levels of all determined myocellular proteins increased immediately after the exercise (P0.05-0.001) among both subject groups. In the endurance group, the protein levels increased (P0.05-0.001) further during the following 2 h after the exercise, and the ratio of S-CA III and S-Mb decreased (P0.…
C-reactive protein and intercellular adhesion molecule-1 are stronger predictors of oxidant stress than blood pressure in established hypertension
2007
Oxidant stress is implicated in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis in cardiovascular diseases. Our aim was to test oxidative stress, as 8-iso-prostaglandin F2alpha (8-iso-PGF2alpha), and its relationship with inflammation markers C-reactive protein (CRP) and tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNFalpha), and endothelial activation assayed as soluble intercellular adhesion molecule (ICAM)-1 and vascular cell adhesion molecule (VCAM)-1 in essential hypertension. In 216 essential hypertensive patients and 55 healthy control individuals, plasma levels of high-sensitivity CRP and TNFalpha, 8-iso-PGF2alpha, ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 were measured in basal conditions. Moreover, basal and 24-h ambulatory blood p…
Psychological assessment of patients with temporomandibular disorders: confirmatory analysis of the dimensional structure of the Brief Symptoms Inven…
2006
Abstract Objective This article analyzes the psychometric and structural properties of the Brief Symptoms Inventory 18 in a sample of patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs), given the convenience of a brief evaluation of distress in these patients. Methods Confirmatory factor analysis was carried out in a sample of 114 patients with TMDs. Two models were tested: the theoretical model with the original structure proposed—which considers three dimensions—and the empirical model obtained through the exploratory factor analysis initially carried out by Leonard R. Derogatis—which consists of the four-factor structure. Results Both models reached satisfactory indexes in confirmatory fac…
Virtual reality treatment of claustrophobia: a case report.
1998
The efficacy of a treatment for claustrophobia using only Virtual Reality (VR) exposure was examined. The subject was a 43-year-old female who suffered from clinically significant distress and impairment and sought psychological therapy. Eight individual VR graded exposure sessions were conducted. All self-report measures were reduced following VR exposure and were maintained at one month follow-up. The necessity of a theoretical framework for this new medium for exposure therapy is discussed.
Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome Caused by Pulmonary Nocardiosis in a Patient With Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
2005
Nocardia is a gram-positive bacillus that infects mainly immunodepressed patients. Its association with lupus erythematosus has been described only occasionally and we have found no reports in the literature of an association between lupus and acute respiratory distress syndrome due to pulmonary nocardiosis. We present such a case and discuss the mechanisms that make this lung infection so virulent as well as its epidemiological and microbiological characteristics, clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment.
Complications following the use of alloplastic materials in urogynecological surgery
2011
Abstract Study design 118 patients, who were admitted from 2005 to 2008 to our department due to complications following mesh implantation, were included in a retrospective survey. We investigated patient symptoms, findings and subsequent patient management. There was a re-evaluation of symptoms in a follow-up eight weeks after the revision procedure. Data from our urogynecological file archive were used. Results The main complaints were de novo urgency, pain and recurrent urinary tract infections. The main findings were mesh erosion and infections including abscess formations and osteomyelitis. Before being admitted to our department, 42 patients (35.6%) had already undergone at least one …
Changes in sexual function and quality of life after single-incision mid-urethral sling for treatment of female stress urinary incontinence.
2013
Abstract Objectives To evaluate the effectiveness and assess the changes in sexual function and quality of life after placement of a single-incision sling for the treatment of female stress urinary incontinence. Study design A prospective study of women diagnosed with stress urinary incontinence. The single-incision sling was implanted and patients were followed postoperatively for 6 months. The postoperative rate of continence, complications, changes in sexual function, and patient-reported quality of life were evaluated. Female Sexual Function in sexually active patients was evaluated before and after the single-incision sling procedure using the Female Sexual Function Index. From January…
Self-Reported Long-Term Autonomic Function After Laparoscopic Total Mesometrial Resection for Early-Stage Cervical Cancer: A Multicentric Study.
2017
ObjectivesThis multicentric retrospective study investigates the early and long-term self-reported urinary, bowel, and sexual dysfunctions in early-stage cervical cancer patients who submitted to laparoscopic total mesometrial resection (L-TMMR), total laparoscopic radical hysterectomy, vaginal-assisted laparoscopic radical hysterectomy, and laparoscopic-assisted radical vaginal hysterectomy.MethodsCervical cancer patients, FIGO (International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics) stage IA2–IB1/IIA1 who submitted to nerve-sparing radical hysterectomy were recruited. Pelvic functions were assessed within 30 days (early outcome) and 12 months after surgery (long-term outcome).ResultsTwo hu…
Induction of oxidative stress and human leukocyte/endothelial cell interactions in polycystic ovary syndrome patients with insulin resistance.
2011
Insulin resistance is a feature of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and is related to mitochondrial and endothelial function. We tested whether hyperandrogenic insulin-resistant women with PCOS, who have an increased risk of vascular disease, display impaired leukocyte-endothelium interactions, and mitochondrial dysfunction. This was a prospective controlled study conducted in an academic medical center. The study population consisted of 43 lean reproductive-age women with PCOS and 39 controls subjects. We evaluated anthropometric and metabolic parameters, adhesion molecules, and interactions between leukocytes and human umbilical vein endothelial cells. Mitochondrial function was studied by as…
