Demands and Challenges : Experiences of Ethiopian Rural School Teachers

Rural schools in Ethiopia are characterized by high drop-out rates, a lack of teaching materials, and low learning achievements. This study examines the experiences of teachers who work in such schools and emphasizes that their work can make significant contributions to the development of education in Ethiopia. The paper seeks to answer a question: ‘How do the teachers perceive their work situation and how could this be improved?’ The findings show that according to teachers’ opinion the current principal challenge is the tension between strict curriculum requirements, associated with annual testing, and follow-up, while the government insists that teaching should be more student centered. …
Lower thoracic spine extension mobility is associated with higher intensity of thoracic spine pain

Objectives: To evaluate the association of thoracic spine (TS) posture and mobility with TS pain. Methods: Participants with TS pain reported maximum, average, and night pain in TS area, and pain summary score was calculated. Upright and sitting TS postures were evaluated by inspection. TS posture and mobility (flexion and extension) were recorded using an inclinometer and a tape measure, respectively. Correlations between posture and mobility assessments were calculated using Spearman rank correlation, the association of TS posture and mobility with TS pain by logistic regression analysis. W artykule przedstawiona została realizacja projektu edukacyjnego pt.: Opolskie szkolnictwo zawodowe bliżej rynku pracy”, który integruje szkoły zawodowe z terenu województwa opolskiego z lokalnymi przedsiębiorcami. Realizacja tego przedsięwzięcia jest odpowiedzią na potrzeby samych przedsiębiorców, którzy zgłaszali problemy w pozyskiwaniu odpowiednio wykwalifikowanej kadry. Projekt przybliża również istniejący rynek pracy młodym ludziom, którzy w najbliższej przyszłości staną się jego aktywnymi uczestnikami. Przedstawiono również wyniki badań, jakimi objęci zostali uczestnicy projektu, uwzględniające ich opinię na temat celowości, efektywności i przydatności podejmowanych działań

Our cities should be designed to accommodate everybody, including children. We will not move toward a more sustainable society unless we accept that children are people with transportation needs, and ‘bussing’ them around, or providing parental limousine services at all times, will not lead to sustainability. Rather, we will need to make our cities walkable for children, at least those above a certain age. Safety has two main aspects, traffic safety and personal safety (risk of assault). We conducted a narrative inquiry among eleven early school leavers who were in prison when they were interviewed. Bezpieczeństwo Komunikacyjne to zagadnienie, które dotyczy bezpośrednio wszystkich ludzi: kierowców, pieszych, rowerzystów, motocyklistów. Artykuł ma na celu przedstawienie podstawowych zagadnień dotyczących bezpieczeństwa komunikacyjnego oraz ukazanie poziomu bezpieczeństwa w drodze do szkoły uczniów w mieście Opole oraz poziomu wiedzy uczniów na temat bezpieczeństwa komunikacyjnego. Szczegółowo przeanalizowano i zwrócono uwagę na sposoby pokonywania przez uczniów drogi do/ze szkoły, poczucie bezpieczeństwa uczniów w ich opinii, oraz wiedzę uczniów na temat ruchu drogowego.
Schooling effects and earnings of French University graduates: school quality matters, but choice of discipline matters more

Our aim in this article is to study the relation between earnings of French universities graduates and some characteristics of their universities. We exploit data from the Céreq's "Génération 98" survey, enriched with information on university characteristics primarily from the ANETES (yearbook of French institutions of higher education). We employ multilevel modeling, enabling us to take advantage of the natural hierarchy in our separate datasets, and thus to identify, and even to measure potential effects of institutional quality.
