Asthma and rhinoconjunctivitis comorbidity: United airway disease or inherited target organs?

2009

Garcia-Marcos L, Ruiz TR, Garcia-Hernandez G, Suarez-Varela MM, Valverde-Molina J, Sanchez-Solis M. Asthma and rhinoconjunctivitis comorbidity: United airway disease or inherited target organs? Pediatr Allergy Immunol 2010: 21: e142–e148. © 2009 The Authors Journal compilation © 2009 Blackwell Munksgaard The idea of a united airway disease for asthma and rhinoconjunctivitis is supported by clinical and epidemiological data. However, many asthmatics do not have rhinoconjunctivitis and vice versa. The aim of this study was to investigate if the family history of a specific organ involvement is associated with the implication of the same organ in the allergic child. According to the organ invo…

The role of atopy in otitis media with effusion among primary school children: audiological investigation

2010

The objective of this study was to evaluate the role of atopy in otitis media with effusion (OME) in children attending primary school in western Sicily focusing on the audiological characteristics among atopic and non-atopic subjects suffering from OME. A total of 310 children (5-6 years old) were screened by skin tests and divided into atopics (G1) and non-atopics (G2). The samples were evaluated for OME by pneumatic otoscopy, tympanogram and acoustic reflex tests. The parameters considered were: documented persistent middle ear effusion by otoscopic examination for a minimum of 3 months; presence of B or C tympanogram; absence of ipsilateral acoustic reflex and a conductive hearing loss …

The impact of age on prevalence of positive skin prick tests and specific IgE tests

2011

SummaryAging is associated with modifications of the immune system, defined as immunosenescence. This could contribute to a reduced prevalence of allergic disease in the elderly population. In this regard, atopy has rarely been considered in the clinical assessment of the geriatric respiratory patient. This article is a review of the available literature assessing the impact of age on atopy. In the majority of papers, we found a lower prevalence of atopy in the most advanced ages, both in healthy subjects and in individuals affected by allergic respiratory diseases. Unfortunately, no large, longitudinal studies performed in the general population have been conducted to further explore this …

Sensitization in early age to food allergens in children with atopic dermatitis

2007

Background: Clinical and laboratory evidence increasingly supports the notion that food allergy plays a role in the pathogenesis of atopic dermatitis (AD). However, the prevalence of clinically significant food hypersensitivity among children with AD remains an unanswered question. Objective: To prospectively determine the prevalence of IgE-mediated food hypersensitivity among patients referred to a dermatology department for evaluation of AD, and to analyze the clinical relevance of these sensitizations in AD. Methods: We studied 44 infants of both sexes, aged less than 12 months old, who attended the dermatology department with symptoms of AD. Compliance with Hanifin-Rajka criteria was co…

Hypersensitivity to clavulanic acid in children

2008

We present 10 cases (6 males and 4 females) of children aged 4 to 12 years, who were diagnosed with allergy to clavulanic acid (CL) and treated in the Paediatric Allergy Section of the University Hospital Dr. Peset in Valencia from 2000 to 2005. The children reported symptoms of urticaria and angio-oedema after receiving orally-administered amoxicillin/clavulanic acid (A-CL) for an infection. Diagnosis was based on the confirmation of an IgE-mediated aetiology by an oral challenge test with amoxicillin-clavulanic acid. Following negative skin test results and CAP for penicilloyl G and V, amoxicillin, ampicillin and cefaclor < 0.35 KU/l, those patients who were allergic to clavulanic acid (p…

Pollen-induced allergic rhinitis in 1360 Italian children: comorbidities and determinants of severity

2013

BACKGROUND: Pollen-induced allergic rhinoconjunctivitis (AR) is highly prevalent and rapidly evolving during childhood. General practitioners may not be fully aware of the nature and severity of symptoms experienced by patients and might underestimate the prevalence of moderate or severe disease. Thus, the relevance of early diagnosis and intervention may be overlooked. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the severity of pollen-induced AR and its determinants in Italian children referred to allergy specialists and who had never received specific immunotherapy (SIT). METHODS: Children (age 4-18 yr) affected by pollen-induced AR who had never undergone SIT were recruited between May 2009 and June 2011…

Elevation of total serum immunoglobulin E is associated with asthma in nonallergic individuals.

2000

Elevated serum immunoglobulin (Ig)E is the hallmark of atopy, and contributes to asthma and bronchial hyperresponsiveness in atopic individuals. In contrast, the significance of IgE in nonallergic subjects is less clear. The aim of the present study is to clarify a potential association of IgE and asthma in absence of clinical allergy. To this purpose 1,219 consecutive patients of a pulmonary practice were evaluated. Nonallergic patients were defined by negative skin prick test, history of atopy and specific IgE, 509 subjects (42%) were nonallergic. Among these, 80 patients (16%) had elevated total IgE levels (150 U x mL(-1)). Prevalence and severity of asthma in nonallergic subjects with I…

Nasal allergen provocation with Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus in patients with chronic rhinitis referred to a rhinologic surgical center.

2002

Background Skin tests and specific immunoglobulin (Ig)E determinations identify the presence of some immune response to allergens, but frequently do not correlate to allergic disease in vivo. Objective To compare clinical history, skin tests and specific IgE determinations with the results of nasal provocation tests (NPT) to confirm clinically relevant allergy to Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (DP) in patients with chronic rhinitis referred to a rhinologic surgical center. Methods Clinical data of 2,194 patients with chronic nasal disorders treated at two rhinologic referral centers between 1992 and 1998 were evaluated. Clinical allergy work-up was routinely performed corresponding to Germa…

Impact of allergic rhinitis on asthma: effects on bronchodilation testing

2008

A remarkable relationship exists between the upper and lower airways. Bronchial obstruction is a paramount feature of asthma, and its reversibility is considered a main step in asthma diagnosis. To investigate the degree of bronchodilation and possible risk factors related to it in patients with moderate-severe persistent allergic rhinitis alone.A total of 375 patients with moderate-severe persistent allergic rhinitis and 115 controls were prospectively and consecutively evaluated by means of clinical examination, skin prick testing, spirometry, and bronchodilation testing.Patients with rhinitis showed a significant increase in forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV) after bronchodilation…
