Magnetresonanztomographische Befunde nach Resektionsarthroplastik des Humeruskopfes

1995

PURPOSE The resection of the humeral head is normally carried out only with respect to four-part and dislocation fractures in elderly patients. The purpose of this study was to examine whether there is a correlation between the clinical results and the MRI findings. MATERIAL AND METHODS 8 patients underwent clinical and MR examination two to 6 years after resection. RESULTS A cartilage-like tissue formation between the remaining humeral head and the glenoid fossa, with signal intensities comparable to hyalin cartilage was found in all patients. CONCLUSION The good functional results following resectional surgery of the humeral head can partially be related to new substitute cartilage result…

Social Learning among Transplant Event Volunteers

2019

Volunteering in adapted sports competitions has not been studied as much as in other competitions. Survey data from volunteers in a supportive role at the European Transplant Sport Week 2016 in Finland were analysed to report the way involvement in the event increased knowledge of transplantation. Through social learning theory, the aim of the study was to report the associations between changes in knowledge, training and volunteering experience of supportive role volunteers. A representative sample of the adult volunteers (n=95, Male=35, Female=60; Disabled=31, non-Disabled=64; Mage=49.7y old, SD=16.8) responded to a web-based survey. Questions included self-perceived knowledge of transpla…

Comparison of the main oesophageal pathophysiological characteristics between short- and long-segment Barrett's oesophagus

2002

Aim: To assess the oesophageal manometric characteristics and 24-h pH profiles of patients with both short-segment and long-segment Barrett's oesophagus and compare them with those of patients with reflux oesophagitis and controls. Methods: Seventy-nine patients who had undergone upper digestive endoscopy were recruited: 16 had short-segment Barrett's oesophagus, 13 had long-segment Barrett's oesophagus, 25 had grade III oesophagitis according to the Savary–Miller classification and 25 were used as controls. The diagnosis of Barrett's oesophagus was based on the histological detection of specialized intestinal metaplasia, which extended  3 cm in patients with long-segment disease. All subje…

Systematic review of the diagnosis of gastric premalignant conditions and neoplasia with high-resolution endoscopic technologies

2013

Aim. The aim of the article is to systematically review the current evidence on the diagnostic use of narrow band imaging (NBI), flexible spectral imaging color enhancement (FICE) and endoscopic image enhancement technology i-scan endoscopies for gastric precancerous and cancerous lesions. Materials and methods. Original manuscripts were searched in PubMed until October 2012. Pertinent data were collected and pooled diagnostic accuracy measures were estimated when possible. Results. In total, 38 studies were evaluated. Thirty-one studies were included for NBI and 7 studies for FICE assessment in this systematic review. No article was found meeting inclusion criteria for i-scan endoscopy. Th…

A girl with an atypical form of ataxia telangiectasia and an additional de novo 3.14Mb microduplication in region 19q12

2011

A 9-year-old girl born to healthy parents showed manifestations suggestive of ataxia telangiectasia (AT), such as short stature, sudden short bouts of horizontal and rotary nystagmus, a weak and dysarthric voice, rolling gait, unstable posture, and atactic movements. She did not show several cardinal features typical of AT such as frequent, severe infections of the respiratory tract. In contrast, she showed symptoms not generally related to AT, including microcephaly, profound motor and mental retardation, small hands and feet, severely and progressively reduced muscle tone with slackly protruding abdomen and undue drooling, excess fat on her upper arms, and severe oligoarthritis. A cranial…

Training program for transanal endoscopic microsurgery.

1988

Televised endoscopy and the concept of the “assisted” endoscopic operation is of great help in teaching surgical endoscopic techniques. The use of training dummies provides a new method of training manual dexterity and surgical skills in special courses or in surgical skill laboratories. We have developed a training system for transanal endoscopic microsurgery. Operations with our technique were performed on 116 patients. Like other microsurgical techniques, our method requires a special introduction and intensive training. This paper presents our multistage, video-supported training course for teaching transanal endoscopic microsurgery. The one-day training session is divided into four ste…

Erythropoietin treatment of the anaemia of myelofibrosis with myeloid metaplasia: results in 20 patients and review of the literature

2004

Recombinant human erythropoietin (rHuEPO) is an effective treatment for the anaemia that occurs secondary to various conditions, but its role in myelofibrosis with myeloid metaplasia (MMM) is not well established. rHuEPO, at an initial dose of 10 000 U thrice a week, was given to 20 patients with MMM and anaemia. Complete response (CR) was defined as transfusion cessation with normal haemoglobin (Hb) levels and partial response (PR) as a transfusion decrease > or =50% and Hb > 10 g/dl maintained for at least 8 weeks. Nine patients (45%) showed a favourable response to treatment, including four CR and five PR, four of whom have maintained their response at a median follow-up of 12.5 months (…
