The combined effect of phytostabilization and different amendments on remediation of soils from post-military areas

2019

Army bases and battle fields are areas of high pollution due to the chemicals released there. Soils in these areas suffer from these uses of the land, and ecosystem services are affected. Although, in the 20th century, the production of bombs and the locations of battle fields and army bases were widespread, there is little research on the impact of war on nature. Moreover, there is a need to rehabilitate the disturbed soils. The contents and ecological risks of Cu, Ni, Cd, Pb, Zn, and Cr in the topsoil from a post-military area (north-eastern Poland) were investigated. In addition, a vegetation experiment was performed with the technique of aided phytostabilization on soils from the study …

The contamination legacy of a decommissioned iron smelter in the Italian Alps

2018

The economically important activity of metal processing can tend to contribute to the degradation of the environment. Smelting is an important source of contaminants, dispersing large quantities of potentially toxic elements (PTE) and coproducts into the environment. Soils in the vicinity of smelters frequently contain high concentrations of PTE. In terms of the quantities processed, the major PTE are iron (Fe), aluminium (Al), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), manganese (Mn), and zinc (Zn); of these Cu, Pb and Zn are, potentially, highly hazardous elements. The general problem addressed by this study is to determine if the PTE concentration in the soils of an area downwind from a decommissioned iron…

A Prioritisation Model Aiding for the Solution of Illegal Buildings Problem

2016

A computer system to perform structure comparison using TOPS representations of protein structure

2001

We describe the design and implementation of a fast topology-based method for protein structure comparison. The approach uses the TOPS topological representation of protein structure, aligning two structures using a common discovered pattern and generating measure of distance derived from an insert score. Heavy use is made of a constraint-based pattern-matching algorithm for TOPS diagrams that we have designed and described elsewhere (Bioinformatics 15(4) (1999) 317). The comparison system is maintained at the European Bioinformatics Institute and is available over the Web at tops.ebi.ac.uk/tops. Users submit a structure description in Protein Data Bank (PDB) format and can compare it with …

Differential proteomic analysis highlights metabolic strategies associated with balhimycin production in Amycolatopsis balhimycina chemostat cultivat…

2010

Abstract Background Proteomics was recently used to reveal enzymes whose expression is associated with the production of the glycopeptide antibiotic balhimycin in Amycolatopsis balhimycina batch cultivations. Combining chemostat fermentation technology, where cells proliferate with constant parameters in a highly reproducible steady-state, and differential proteomics, the relationships between physiological status and metabolic pathways during antibiotic producing and non-producing conditions could be highlighted. Results Two minimal defined media, one with low Pi (0.6 mM; LP) and proficient glucose (12 g/l) concentrations and the other one with high Pi (1.8 mM) and limiting (6 g/l; LG) glu…

Differential proteomic analysis reveals novel links between primary metabolism and antibiotic production in Amycolatopsis balhimycina.

2010

A differential proteomic analysis, based on 2-DE and MS procedures, was performed on Amycolatopsis balhimycina DSM5908, the actinomycete producing the vancomycin-like antibiotic balhimycin. A comparison of proteomic profiles before and during balhimycin production characterized differentially and constitutively expressed protein isoforms, which were associated to 203 ORFs in the A. balhimycina genome. These data, providing insights on the major metabolic pathways/molecular processes operating in this organism, were used to compile 2-DE reference maps covering 3-10, 4-7 and 4.5-5.5 pH gradients available over the World Wide Web as interactive web pages (http://www.unipa.it/ampuglia/Abal-prot…

Diagnosis of aortic dissection: the value of transesophageal echocardiography.

1987

Using the transesophageal approach the descending part of the aorta can be imaged by two-dimensional enchocardiography in cross sections comparable to computer tomograms. The value of combined transesophageal and transthoracic echocardiography was evaluated in 53 patients who were studied consecutively from 1983 to 1986 with symptoms of aortic dissection and compared with computed tomography, angiography, surgery and/or autopsy. In all patients the transthoracic aorta could be visualized and the dissection could be classified according to DeBakey: in 9 of 29 patients (34%) type I dissection, in 4 (14%) type II dissection and in 16 (55%) type III dissection was found. Operation was carried o…

Progress on nuclear reaction rates affecting the stellar production of 26Al

2023

Abstract The radioisotope 26Al is a key observable for nucleosynthesis in the Galaxy and the environment of the early Solar System. To properly interpret the large variety of astronomical and meteoritic data, it is crucial to understand both the nuclear reactions involved in the production of 26Al in the relevant stellar sites and the physics of such sites. These range from the winds of low- and intermediate-mass asymptotic giant branch stars; to massive and very massive stars, both their Wolf–Rayet winds and their final core-collapse supernovae (CCSN); and the ejecta from novae, the explosions that occur on the surface of a white dwarf accreting material from a stellar companion. Several r…

Ruolo dell’imaging TC nella valutazione post-mortem dei soggetti deceduti per caduta da altezze elevate: nostra esperienza

2016

The CT-v can therefore be considered an effective method as an aid in the autopsy evaluation of individuals who died for various causes; in particular, in the case of deaths due to accidental falls from high altitudes, is able to identify the primary cause of death and all the epiphenomena due to precipitation.

Evaluation of routing policies using an interval-valued TOPSIS approach for the allocation rules

2021

Abstract The success of warehouse management in a supply chain widely depends on an efficient and effective retrieve of customer orders, which is known as the picking process. This paper investigates various routing policies of pickers under two different allocation methods of items in a warehouse of fixed layout, and evaluates their performance in terms of the resulting travel distance by means of a simulation approach. The allocation strategies taken into account are the random storage and a multi-criteria approach, called Interval-Value TOPSIS (IV-T), which is expressively proposed in this paper as a new way to solve the storage allocation problem of items in a warehouse. Because of the …
