A Cross-Cultural Study of Smartphone Adoption in Uzbekistan and South Korea

2019

Smartphone technology has changed how mobile phones are perceived and used in daily life. In 2015, global smartphone sales reached 1.4 billion units, representing an increase of 14.4 percent from 2014. Despite this popularity, penetration rates vary significantly across countries, with a global median of 43%. The main purpose of this research is to examine smartphone adoption in Uzbekistan and South Korea based on the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) and to categorize constructs according to the Kano model. The findings indicate significant differences between South Korea and Uzbekistan in terms of technology adoption as a whole and perception of UTAUT constructs.

A Win-Win Scheme for Improving the Environmental Sustainability of University Commuters’ Mobility and Getting Environmental Credits

2022

European Union Member States are called upon to meet internationally proposed environmental goals. This study is based, in particular, on the recommendation of the European Union (EU), which encourages Member States to pursue effective policies to reduce greenhouse gas (GHGs) emissions, including through appropriate changes in the behavioral habits of citizens. In this respect, among the main sectors involved, transport and mobility should certainly be mentioned. National institutions should be adequately involved in order to achieve the objectives set; in this regard, universities must certainly be considered for their educational value. These latter, for instance, could commit to improvin…

COD and TPH analysis in slops experimental treatment plants: analytical problems.

2015

COD AND TPH ANALYSIS IN SLOPS EXPERIMENTAL TREATMENT PLANTS: ANALYTICAL PROBLEMS. In the last years, the persistence and accumulation of xenobiotic compounds in the environment created many disposal problems of oily wastewater generated by ships, mainly in engine-rooms (bilge waters) and by cleaning of tanker (slops). The high salinity levels (up to 25.000 mgL-1) and the pollutants concentration, both limit the chances of discharge into the sewer systems and address the disposal of these wastewaters to the sea. For these reasons it is necessary to treat such wastewater efficiently before discharging [1]. As a part of a broader project concerning slops treatments, this work addresses issues …

Analysis of the Pre and Post-COVID-19 Lockdown Use of Smartphone Apps in Spain

2021

The global pandemic of COVID-19 has changed our daily habits and has undoubtedly affected our smartphone usage time. This paper attempts to characterize the changes in the time of use of smartphones and their applications between the pre-lockdown and post-lockdown periods in Spain, during the first COVID-19 confinement in 2020. This study analyzes data from 1940 participants, which was obtained both from a survey and from a tracking application installed on their smartphones. We propose manifold learning techniques such as clustering, to assess, both in a quantitative and in a qualitative way, the behavioral and social effects and implications of confinement in the Spanish population. We al…

Clinicians' assessment of mobile monitoring: a comparative study in Japan and Spain.

2013

Background: The gradual but steady shift toward telemedicine during the past decades is a clear response to important health problems that most industrialized countries have been facing. The growing elderly population and changing dietary habits have led to an increase in people with chronic diseases and overall health care expenditures. As more consumers use their mobile device as their preferred information and communication technology (ICT) device, mobile health monitoring has been receiving increasing attention in recent years. Objective: This study examines clinicians’ perception of factors determining mobile health monitoring acceptance in Japan and Spain. The study proposes a causal …

Total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) determination in surfactant stabilized marine water emulsions

2022

Bilge waters are wastewaters produced on boats during navigation and usually contain hydrocarbons and oils. They cannot be released into the sea if not below certain hydrocarbon concentration limits set by current legislation. Surfactants are often used to improve the solubility of petroleum hydrocarbons in water and in this work, the analytical approach proposed is suitable to determine accurately the concentration of hydrocarbons in surfactant-rich waters, as found in bilge water or similar wastewater. The method relies on the surfactant precipitation by addition of potassium and calcium salts, which also promote TPH extraction through a “salting out” effect. This allows for an accurate d…

The self-reported causes of sleepiness in shift-working tram and truck drivers

2021

Identifying the causes of sleepiness in various safety-critical work environments is neces-sary for implementing more efficient fatigue management strategies. In transportation, little is known about drivers' own perceptions of these causes. Therefore, we instructed shift-working tram (n = 23) and long-haul truck drivers (n = 52) to report at the end of their shifts what made them sleepy if they felt so. These self-reports, measured on-duty sleepiness, and sleep amounts were recorded on every shift over a period of 2-3 weeks per driver. The causes of sleepiness were queried with smartphone applications and sleep logs. Sleepiness was measured with the Karolinska Sleepiness Scale (KSS) and sl…

A cultural comparison study of smartphone adoption in Uzbekistan, South Korea and Turkey

2017

Smartphone popularity is increasing due to the technological advances that mean manufacturers can make more sophisticated devices, and telecommunication companies can provide better connections. Gartner reported that 403 million smartphones were sold in the fourth quarter of 2015, a 9.7% increase over the same period in 2014. It is a common perception that users tend to utilise advanced technology to increase productivity. However, there are studies indicating quite opposite or alternatively slow rates of adoption. To avoid this, companies invest in studying consumer behaviour. The purpose of the study is to examine the effects of drivers and cultural differences on smartphone acceptance in…

Utilizing digital tools to support face-to-face care : Examining uptake within the practices of Australian psychologist

2020

Societal adoption of mobile phones and other digital devices, and the resulting widespread digital literacy, allows for new possibilities in approaching and supporting faceto-face therapy. In this study, we examined the application of digital communication tools and media within therapeutic care by 33 psychologists across Australia. Uses of digital technologies were analyzed with a focus on both the approaches applied within face-to-face therapy sessions and those occurring as an adjunct to these sessions. In contrast to online counseling, established upon a foundation of digital technologies, the study results indicate that the use of technology in face-to-face therapy is still emerging bu…

Understanding Mobile Showrooming Based on a Technology Acceptance and Use Model

2021

Showrooming is an increasingly popular behaviour in the omnichannel era. The purpose of this paper is to understand the consumer intention to showroom through a technology acceptance and use model based on UTAUT2 that includes value consciousness and purchase involvement as drivers of showrooming intention and mobile dependency as a moderator. Data collected via a survey answered by 659 showroomers were analysed using Partial Least Squares (PLS). Results show that value consciousness, purchase involvement, hedonic motivation and social influence explain mobile showrooming intention and mobile dependency moderates the impact of value consciousness on mobile showrooming intention. Our results…
