Abstract. The evolution of the tropopause inversion layer (TIL) during cyclogenesis in the North Atlantic storm track is investigated using operational meteorological analysis data (Integrated Forecast System from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts). For this a total of 130 cyclones have been analysed during the months August through October between 2010 and 2014 over the North Atlantic. Their paths of migration along with associated flow features in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere (UTLS) have been tracked based on the mean sea level pressure field. Subsets of the 130 cyclones have been used for composite analysis using minimum sea level pressure to filter t…

Northern Hemisphere extratropical cyclones: A comparison of detection and tracking methods and different reanalyses

2008

Abstract The applicability of three different cyclone detection and tracking schemes is investigated with reanalysis datasets. First, cyclone climatologies and cyclone characteristics of the 40-yr ECMWF Re-Analysis (ERA-40) are compared with the NCEP–NCAR dataset using one method. ERA-40 shows systematically more cyclones, and therefore a higher cyclone center density, than the NCEP–NCAR reanalysis dataset. Geostrophically adjusted geopotential height gradients around cyclone centers, a measure of cyclone intensity, are enhanced in ERA-40 compared with the NCEP–NCAR reanalysis dataset. The variability of the number of cyclones per season is significantly correlated between the two reanalysi…

Surface Cyclones in the ERA-40 Dataset (1958–2001). Part I: Novel Identification Method and Global Climatology

2006

Abstract A novel method is introduced to generate climatological frequency distributions of meteorological features from gridded datasets. The method is used here to derive a climatology of extratropical cyclones from sea level pressure (SLP) fields. A simple and classical conception of cyclones is adopted where a cyclone is identified as the finite area that surrounds a local SLP minimum and is enclosed by the outermost closed SLP contour. This cyclone identification procedure can be applied to individual time instants, and climatologies of cyclone frequency, fc, are obtained by simple time averaging. Therefore, unlike most other climatologies, the method is not based on the application of…

Abstract. The STRAP (Synergie Transdisciplinaire pour Répondre aux Aléas liés aux Panaches volcaniques) campaign was conducted over the entire year of 2015 to investigate the volcanic plumes of Piton de La Fournaise (La Réunion, France). For the first time, measurements at the local (near the vent) and at the regional scales were conducted around the island. The STRAP 2015 campaign has become possible thanks to strong cross-disciplinary collaboration between volcanologists and meteorologists. The main observations during four eruptive periods (85 days) are summarised. They include the estimates of SO2, CO2 and H2O emissions, the altitude of the plume at the vent and over different areas of …

Fully automatic face recognition system using a combined audio-visual approach

2005

This paper presents a novel audio and video information fusion approach that greatly improves automatic recognition of people in video sequences. To that end, audio and video information is first used independently to obtain confidence values that indicate the likelihood that a specific person appears in a video shot. Finally, a post-classifier is applied to fuse audio and visual confidence values. The system has been tested on several news sequences and the results indicate that a significant improvement in the recognition rate can be achieved when both modalities are used together.

Eye tracking analysis of minor details in films for audio description

2012

This article focuses on the many instances when minute details found in feature films may have direct implications upon the development of both the visual and plot narratives. The main question we would like to ask examines whether very subtle details which may easily go unnoticed by the viewer should be audio described. To assess the visual consciousness of such minute details, a perception experiment was conducted using eye-tracking technology and questionnaires. Though the result is not conclusive, it shows a clear methodological approach in the field of the audio description of visual details, and does give some indication as to what should be taken into consideration in future studies …

Lyrics against images: music and audio description

2012

Music has been an integral part of films from as far back as the silent movie era, where a piano accompaniment was used to build the narrative and an orchestra was used to drown out the sound of the projector. Music in films can encompass a wide array of elements, from a song to a whistle, and can play many roles, as has been commented upon by many researchers. Due to the relevance of music in film narrative, it is an element which merits attention when it comes to making a film accessible, be it through Audio description, Audio subtitling, Sign Language or Subtitling for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing. This article focuses on Audio description (AD) and how music is handled in audio described…

Correction of Long Vehicle Off Tracking by Multiple Axle Steering

2019

When planning the road vehicles for the transport of passengers or goods, engineers should take care to contrast some undesirable phenomena in the lateral dynamics, such as high-speed instability or off tracking. While the former is less troubling in the slow heavy vehicles, the latter is a serious problem due to the risk of invading the neighbouring lanes. The use of multi-wheel steering may completely cancel this drawback and, pursuing an optimized correlation among the steering angles, a functional inter-dependence based on the cubic “witch of Agnesi” is found to be very promising. Simple control systems with electromechanical or electronic components may be easily implemented for the mu…

Development of fluorescent platforms for the design of multifunctional compounds for in vitro and in vivo applications in molecular imaging

2018

The objective of this thesis was the development and evaluation of new molecular platformsfor optical fluorescence imaging applications. This work sought to develop new tools that caneasily be modified and adapted to the specific needs of the intended use. This is required asthe fluorophore will influence the final properties and should thus be incorporated beforestructural optimization of the selected agent rather than at the very end. Two main axes wereexplored; the use of BODIPYs for the development of trackable therapeutic agents that areprimarily intended for in vitro applications and the use of azaBODIPYs for the design of an invivo compatible fluorescent platform. In the first part tw…

CUSHAW2-GPU: Empowering Faster Gapped Short-Read Alignment Using GPU Computing

2014

We present CUSHAW2-GPU to accelerate the CUSHAW2 algorithm using compute unified device architecture (CUDA)-enabled GPUs. Two critical GPU computing techniques, namely intertask hybrid CPU-GPU parallelism and tile-based Smith-Waterman map backtracking using CUDA, are investigated to facilitate fast alignments. By aligning both simulated and real reads to the human genome, our aligner yields comparable or better performance compared to BWA-SW, Bowtie2, and GEM. Furthermore, CUSHAW2-GPU with a Tesla K20c GPU achieves significant speedups over the multithreaded CUSHAW2, BWA-SW, Bowtie2, and GEM on the 12 cores of a high-end CPU for both single-end and paired-end alignment.
