Prospective mathematics teachers’ self-referential metaphors as indicators of the emerging professional identity

Ideals play a key role in a student teachers’ identity work. They form targets to strive for and a mirror for reflection. In this paper, we examine Finnish mathematics student teachers’ metaphors for the teacher’s role (N= 188). We classified the metaphors according to a model that identified teachers as subject matter experts, didactical experts, and pedagogical experts, with the addition of another two categories, self-referential and contextual. For the exploration of emerging professional identities, we studied the self-referential metaphors, which formed the most common category in the data. Teaching practice as a testbench of learning in master's degree education for nurse teachers in Finland.

This article presents the approach and procedures used in a Finnish developmental study on nurse teacher education. The teaching practice period was organized by dividing student teachers into small study groups and assigning the group an entire course to be planned and carried out in teacher/student collaboration. The work process of the groups was videotaped and analysed qualitatively. Preliminary results and ideas concerning the developmental needs of nurse teacher education are presented.

espanolEste estudio pretende avanzar en la comprension de la relacion entre el profesor y el estudiante universitario con el objetivo de mejorar el rendimiento de los estudiantes. Se articula sobre tres ejes: el enfoque de rendimiento del estudiante, la relacion entre diversos aspectos del profesor y, fi nalmente, el efecto de estos aspectos sobre el rendimiento del estudiante. Los resultados obtenidos de una muestra de 45 profesores y 932 estudiantes muestran que la orientacion al estudiante por parte del profesor afecta al aprendizaje percibido y a la satisfaccion del estudiante.
