N-benzoylindole-2,3-quinodimethane: Diels-Alder reactivity and synthetic applications for [b]annellated indoles

Abstract The Diels-Alder reactivity of in situ generated N -benzoylindole-2,3-quinodimethane has been expanded considerably to include reactions with carbon- and hetero-dienophiles which furnish a variety of [ b ]annellated indoles as well as functionalized and annellated carbazoles. The frontier molecular orbital theory was found to be a useful model for the prediction of the experimental results under consideration of reactivity aspects.

Ion exchange resins (IERs) are widely used by the nuclear industry to decontaminate radioactive effluents. After use they are usually encapsulated in cementitious materials. However, the solidified waste forms can exhibit a strong expansion, possibly leading to cracking. Millstone coastal quarries of the Mediterranean: A new class of sea level indicator

The coasts of Italy still preserve several remnants of coastal quarries built in antiquity, that now provide insights into the intervening sea-level changes occurred during the last millennia. In this paper, we show and discuss a new class of sea level indicator consisting of millstones carved along the rocky coast of southern Italy since 2500 BP, that are currently submerged. They were extracted from beachrocks, sandstones or similar sedimentary rocks, easier for carving by ancient carving tools.
