‘I changed my life’s course’ : The impact of the Helsingin Sanomat Foundation fellowship on the career path of a journalist

This study focuses on the fellowship program of Helsingin Sanomat Foundation, which has sent a hundred mid-career journalists from Finland to study abroad at prominent universities. Based on two surveys, one on the fellows (n = 45) and one on a control group (n = 52), the article discusses the impact the fellowship education has on the journalists and their careers. The surveys are complemented with in-depth interviews of 10 fellow journalists. The effect of pH and temperature on the thermal inactivation of different strains of Bacillus cereus was modeled. Inactivation tests were carried out in carrot broth, following a full factorial design at four levels for temperature (from 90 to 105 degrees C, depending on the strain) and pH (6.2, 5.8, 5.2, and 4.7). Individual inactivation curves were analyzed by applying the Weibull model function (with percent discrepancy close to 20% for most cases), and the effects of pH and temperature on the scale parameter (designated D(beta)) and the shape parameter (beta) were also studied. Background The incidence of acute kidney injury (AKI) is estimated at 10 to 20% in patients admitted to intensive care units (ICU) and often requires renal replacement therapy (RRT). A note on the higher order strain and stress tensors within deformation gradient elasticity theories: Physical interpretations and comparisons

Abstract Higher order strain and stress tensors encompassed within gradient elasticity theories are discussed with a particular concern to the physical meaning of double and triple stresses. A single rule is shown to hold for the physical interpretation of the indices of a higher order stress tensor both within distortion gradient and strain gradient theories, whereas the analogous Mindlin’s rule holds only within distortion gradient theories. Double and triple stresses are discussed separately with the aid of simple illustrative examples. A corrigendum to a previous paper by the author (IJSS 50 (2013) 3749–3765) is also presented.

Abstract Previous studies demonstrated that the ion composition of the exposure medium may strongly influence the mutagenicity of many compounds in the liquid preincubation modification of the reversion assay with his − Salmonella typhimurium strains. Similar influences were now observed in the reversion assay with trp − Escherichia coli strain WP2 uvrA . The exposure medium was 8 mM sodium phosphate buffer (pH 7.4), containing no other ions or 125 mM KCl. Omission of KCl resulted in an about 10-fold enhancement of the mutagenic activity of 7-methylbenz[ a ]anthracene 5,6-oxide, but in a strong decrease in the mutagenicity of 1-hydroxymethylpyrene sulphate, close to the limit of detection. …
