Transfer of Immunity from Mother to Offspring Is Mediated via Egg-Yolk Protein Vitellogenin.

2015

Insect immune systems can recognize specific pathogens and prime offspring immunity. High specificity of immune priming can be achieved when insect females transfer immune elicitors into developing oocytes. The molecular mechanism behind this transfer has been a mystery. Here, we establish that the egg-yolk protein vitellogenin is the carrier of immune elicitors. Using the honey bee, Apis mellifera, model system, we demonstrate with microscopy and western blotting that vitellogenin binds to bacteria, both Paenibacillus larvae – the gram-positive bacterium causing American foulbrood disease – and to Escherichia coli that represents gram-negative bacteria. Next, we verify that vitellogenin bi…

Modeling of medical activity heterogenity to improve the hospital management by diagnosis-related groups

1998

Since the early 1980s healthcare systems in the industrialized nations have been undergoing radical reform aimed at curbing overspending of hospital expenditure. After a discussion of the limits of a prospective payment due to heterogeneity of costs within DRGs, we demonstrate the ability of anovel statistical model to identify high cost patients. We derive from this statistical model an economic heuristic in order to account for high cost patients in budget allocation and a Structural and Contingent method is proposed as a budgeting tool. Economic analysis based on this modeling of DRG heterogeneity further reveals the potential for improving the equity and the efficiency of the prospectiv…

Strategical behaviours in French ambulatory care (a theoretical and empirical study)

1991

Specifying agency relationships between the different actors in ambulatory care - the patient, the physician, the insurance and public authorities - allows to render an account of the complexity and the specificity of the health system. After a presentation of the normative approach of the agency theory, we will focus on two agency relationships : the Relationship between the insurance and insured people and the relationship between the patient and the physician. The driving part of supply appears through the analysis of the relationship between the physician and the others : he is the agent of both the patient and public authorities. The issue is then the hypothesis of supplier induced dem…

Linguistic and cultural identity : Finns who have been through English immersion education

2007

The aim of the study was to investigate the influence of English immersion education on the linguistic and cultural identities of Finns, with a view to understanding the interaction between English second language acquisition and identity. In-depth, semi- structured interviews were conducted with seven graduates from the English School in Helsinki, all of whom have Finnish parents and studied through English for most of their childhoods. The study addresses the question of whether acquiring and speaking English as children causes Finns to identify with non-Finnish linguistic and cultural communities, such as native English speaking communities. This is particularly relevant considering the …

Variation of environmental condition and diet act on immune parameters of Mytilus galloprovinciali

2015

Variation of environmental condition and diet act on immune parameters of Mytilus galloprovincialis The knowledge of the immunity mechanisms as environmental indicators and their alterations in the case of physical stress can be of fundamental importance in the environmental management programs. Recently has been shown that environmental factors affect immune responses in some species of bivalves. In this study we assessed different enzymatic activities from digestive gland of M. galloprovincialis such esterase, phosphatase and phenoloxidase (PO), involved in digestive inflammatory, detoxification and melanization processes. Particularly, esterases catalyze the hydrolysis reaction of the es…

The role of maternal effects in host-parasite interactions: examination of the development of the immune defense in a colonial seabird, the black-leg…

2004

One of the main aims of evolutionary biology is to understand the mechanisms responsible for the phenotypic variation on which natural selection can act. Maternal effects occur when a mother's phenotype or her environment influence her offspring's phenotype. Despite the importance of such effects for the ecology of host-parasite interactions, their role has been relatively neglected to date. In this thesis, we examined how mothers influence the immune defense of their young in an environment that varies in space and time. This work has primarily focused on a colonial seabird, the black-legged kittiwake (Rissa tridactyla). Using this model, we have first shown that specific maternal antibodi…

Focusing on Ciona intestinalis (Tunicata) innate immune system. Evolutionary implications

2009

Phylogenetic analyses based on molecular data provide compelling evidence that ascidians are of critical importance for studying chordate immune system evolution. The Ciona intestinalis draft genome sequence allows searches for phylogenetic relationships, gene cloning and expression of immunorelevant molecules. Acidians lack of the pivotal components of the vertebrate recombinatory adaptive immunity, i.e., MHC, TCRs and dimeric immunoglobulins. However, bioinformatic sequence analyses recognized genic elements indicating the essential features of the Ig superfamily and ancestor proto-MHC genes, suggesting a primitive pre-duplication and pre-recombination status. C. intestinalis genes for in…
