Communicating through ancillary gestures: Exploring effects on coperformers and audiences

2020

Musicians make elaborate movements while performing, often using gestures that might seem extraneous. To explore these movements, we motion-captured and audio-recorded different pairings of clarinetists and pianists performing Brahms’ Clarinet Sonata No. 1 with two manipulations: (a) allowing the performers full vs. no visual feedback, and (b) allowing the performers full vs. partial auditory feedback (i.e., the clarinetist could not hear the pianist). We found that observer ratings of audio–visual point-light renditions discriminated between manipulations and refined this insight through subsequent audio-alone and visual-alone experiments, providing an understanding of each modality’s cont…

Explicit behavioral detection of visual changes develops without their implicit neurophysiological detectability

2012

Change blindness is a failure of reporting major changes across consecutive images if separated, e.g., by a brief blank interval. Successful change detection across interrupts requires focal attention to the changes. However, findings of implicit detection of visual changes during change blindness have raised the question of whether the implicit mode is necessary for development of the explicit mode. To this end, we recorded the visual mismatch negativity (vMMN) of the event-related potentials (ERPs) of the brain, an index of implicit pre-attentive visual change detection, in adult humans performing an oddball-variant of change blindness flicker task. Images of 500 ms in duration were prese…

AbstractThis text confirms that the funerary monument commissioned in 1609 by Juan Alfonso Pimentel, count-duke of Benavente to the genoese sculptors Giuseppe Carlone and Oberto Casella was for friar Domingo Anadon in the dominican convent …

Humora tulkošana no angļu valodas spāņu valodā. "Lielā sprādziena teorijas" piemērs

2015

Šis maģisra darbs ir vēltīts humora tulkošanas tēmai. Pētījuma mērķis ir izvērtēt humora tulkošanu no angļu valodas spāņu valodā, par piemēru ņemot televīzijas seriālu “Lielā sprādziena teorija” (2007). Lai to paveiktu, tika izvēlēti, klasificēti un aprakstīti astoņdesmit piemēri no iepriekš minētā seriāla pirmās sezonas gan angļu, gan spāņu valodā. Darbs veikts, izmantojot kvaliatīvo izpētes metodi, galvenokārt balstoties un salīdzinošo analīzi. Iegūtie rezultāti norāda, ka, neskatoties uz to, ka humora tulkošana ir sarežģīta, lielākā daļa analizēto humoristisko situāciju nav cietušas tipoloģiskas izmaiņas, tāpat kā nav zaudējušas humoristisko intensivitāti. Līdz ar to, pētījuma veikšanai …

Women's Emotions Towards the Mobile Phone

2012

The purpose of this study is to investigate whether women's emotions associate differently with the mobile phone depending on the type of family in which they live. James A. Russell's circumplex model of affect which explores four main emotional dimensions, excitement, distress, depression and contentment, was applied. The article is based on the female sub-sample (N = 3,704) of nationally representative survey data collected from Italy, France, the UK, Germany and Spain (N = 7,255) in 2009. The results show that it is women living in blended families who seem to associate more distress and less feelings of contentment with the mobile phone than women living in other types of family. peerRe…

Story beats in videogames as value-driven choice-based unit operations

2021

We present a framework of story beats, defined as microunits of dramatic action, as a tool for the ludonarrative analysis of videogames. First, we explain the Goal - Action - Reaction - Outcome model of the story beat. Then, we present six types of story beats, Action, Interaction, Inaction, Mental, Emotion, and Sensory, providing videogame examples for each category. In the second half of the paper, we contextualise this framework in the classic game studies theory of videogame narrative and player action: unit operations, gamic action, anatomy of choice, and game design patterns, wrapping it up in the most recent trends in cognitive narratology. Ultimately, we present the story beat as a …

We studied whether and how cultural family background may shape the processing of an audiobook in the human brain. During functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), 48 healthy volunteers from two different cultural family backgrounds listened to an audi…

National identity, national music and popular music in the Italian Music Press during the long 19th century

2011

Discusses the notions of national identity, national music and popular music as they emerged in Italian music periodicals during the years 1840–1890, in relation to the process of Italy’s political unification and the dissemination of foreign operas such as French grands opéras in the years 1840–1870 and Wagner’s Musikdramen from 1871 on. Essays and articles by relevant critics and musicians, such as Abramo Basevi and Francesco D’Arcais are discussed. Articles by lesser known journalists such as Pietro Cominazzi and Mattia Cipollone are also taken into account. The use of words like “national” and “popular” is analysed when referring to Italian opera, to its history and to the operas by for…
