Empirical Investigation of Curve Number Method Parameters in the Mediterranean Area
2012
AbstractThe curve number (CN) method is widely used as a technique for estimating surface runoff depth from rainstorms. This simply lumped method is based on the main parameter CN, which represents the lumped expression of basin absorption, and on a parameter that represents interception, infiltration during the early part of a storm, and surface depression storage, called initial abstraction. In this paper, CN is evaluated at the basin scale from rainfall-runoff multiday events, in the observation period 1940–1997 (recorded length mean equal to 20 years) for 61 Sicilian basins with three different methods: NEH4 method, asymptotic fitting method, and a least-squares method. A first analysis…
Molte Palermo. Temi
2019
Ruthenium‐assisted tellurium abstraction in bis(thiophen‐2‐yl) ditelluride
2023
The reaction of [RuCl2(CO)3]2 and Te2Tpn2 (Tpn = thiophen-2-yl, C4H3S) in the absence of light resulted in the formation of cct-[RuCl2(CO)2(TeTpn2)2] (1) [cis(Cl)-cis(CO)-trans(TeTpn2)] and TeTpn2 (2) together with the precipitation of tellurium. The complex 1 and the monotelluride 2 were characterized by NMR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The decomposition of Te2Tpn2 to TeTpn2 has been monitored by 125Te NMR spectroscopy and seemed to be faster than the ligand substitution in [RuCl2(CO)3]2 by TeTpn2. A catalytic cycle is proposed for the decomposition of Te2Tpn2 to TeTpn2 based on the PBE0-D3/def2-TZVP calculations. peerReviewed
A Combined Experimental and Theoretical Approach to the Photogeneration of 5,6-Dihydropyrimidin-5-yl Radicals in Nonaqueous Media
2016
The chemical fate of radical intermediates is relevant to understand the biological effects of radiation and to explain formation of DNA lesions. A direct approach to selectively generate the putative reactive intermediates is based on the irradiation of photolabile precursors. But, to date, radical formation and reactivity have only been studied in aqueous media, which do not completely mimic the micro environment provided by the DNA structure and its complexes with proteins. Thus, it is also important to evaluate the photogeneration of nucleoside-based radicals in nonaqueous media. The attention here is focused on the independent generation of 5,6-dihydropyrimidin-5-yl radicals in organic…
How Companies Develop a Culture for Digital Innovation: A Multiple-Case Study
2021
Companies are constantly facing new challenges through digital technologies, as they can cause rapid changes in their business environment. Digital innovations can offer the opportunity to gain competitive advantages, but in practice, companies often struggle to create the conditions for this. Developing a culture for digital innovation is an important capability that companies need to build. It includes appropriate organizational structures, working methods, skills, and new ways of thinking in the innovation process. This has been explored in previous research at a high level of abstraction. Our paper complements past findings with a detailed study of what activities companies are doing in…
Hydrogen abstraction by photoexcited benzophenone: consequences for DNA photosensitization
2016
International audience; We report a computational investigation of the hydrogen abstraction (H-abstraction) induced by triplet benzophenone (3BP) on thymine nucleobase and backbone sugar. The chemical process is studied using both high level multiconfigurational perturbation and density functional theory. Both methods show good agreement in predicting small kinetic barriers. Furthermore the behavior of benzophenone in DNA is simulated using molecular dynamics and hybrid quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics methods. The accessibility of benzophenone to the labile hydrogens within B-DNA is demonstrated, as well as the driving force for this reaction. We evidence a strong dependence of the H-…
Becoming a beer expert: is simple exposure with feedback sufficient to learn beer categories?
2015
Category learning is an important aspect of expertise development which had been little studied in the chemosensory field. The wine literature suggests that through repeated exposure to wines, sensory information is stored by experts as prototypes. The goal of this study was to further explore this issue using beers. We tested the ability of beer consumers to correctly categorize beers from two different categories (top- and bottom-fermented beers) before and after repeated exposure with feedback to beers from these categories. We found that participants learned to identify the category membership of beers to which they have been exposed but were unable to generalize their learning to other…
Systematic review: progression of beryllium sensitization to chronic beryllium disease
2012
BACKGROUND The relevance of beryllium sensitization testing for occupational health practice and prevention is unclear. AIMS To analyse the natural course of beryllium sensitization and clarify the prognosis following cessation of exposure among sensitized workers. METHODS An electronic literature search was conducted in PubMed, Embase, Toxline and Cochrane databases supplemented by a manual search. Data abstraction and study quality assessment with adapted guideline checklists were performed independently by three reviewers. Seven studies met the eligibility criteria and were included in the systematic review; however, six of the seven studies were of low methodological quality. RESULTS A …
A novel abstraction for swarm intelligence: particle field optimization
2016
Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is a popular meta-heuristic for black-box optimization. In essence, within this paradigm, the system is fully defined by a swarm of "particles" each characterized by a set of features such as its position, velocity and acceleration. The consequent optimized global best solution is obtained by comparing the personal best solutions of the entire swarm. Many variations and extensions of PSO have been developed since its creation in 1995, and the algorithm remains a popular topic of research. In this work we submit a new, abstracted perspective of the PSO system, where we attempt to move away from the swarm of individual particles, but rather characterize each …
Learning Pros and Cons of Model-Driven Development in a Practical Teaching Experience
2016
Current teaching guides on Software Engineering degree focus mainly on teaching programming languages from the first courses. Conceptual modeling is a topic that is only taught in last courses, like master courses. At that point, many students do not see the usefulness of conceptual modeling and most of them have difficulty to reach the level of abstraction needed to work with them. In order to make the learning of conceptual modeling more attractive, we have conducted an experience where students compare a traditional development versus a development using conceptual models through a Model-Driven Development (MDD) method. This way, students can check on their own pros and cons of working w…
