The 2-5A System and HIV Infection

1994

The human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) is the etiologic agent of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). The progression of this retro viral disease is associated with various clinical manifestations, including the acquisition of an immunodeficient state, the frequent presence of neurological disorders, and some malignancies (reviewed in Barre-Sinoussi et al. 1983; Wong-Staal and Gallo 1985; Fauci 1988). Immunologic dysfunctions caused by HIV-1 infection include disorders in the production of cytokines (Murray et al. 1984; Abb et al. 1986). For example, a significant decrease in the production of interferon-α (IFN-α) by cultured peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from pat…

The early childhood care and development mission and the institutional circuit of evidence

2019

Early childhood care and development has increasingly become a part of the global development agenda. Fueled by a threefold rationale, rooted in development psychology, social economy, and human rights, the arguments for investing in early childhood care and development are virtually unassailable. However, this rationale is somehow at odds with insights developed within the sociology of childhood, emphasizing childhood as a social construction amendable to context and children’s own agency. Inspired by the methodological approach known as institutional ethnography, we explore how development aid workers respond to and enact the early childhood care and development mission. Building on inter…

Adaptation and implementation of the German social-emotional learning programme Papilio in Finland : A pilot study

2019

This study investigated the cross‐national adaptation and implementation of Papilio, a German social–emotional learning programme, in Finnish early childhood education and care (ECEC) centres. Papilio is a developmentally focused, scientifically based intervention programme focused on preventing behavioural problems and fostering social–emotional competence in children aged 3–7. The aim of this study was to investigate and evaluate the cross‐national adaptation and cross‐cultural adaptation and implementation of Papilio in the Finnish ECEC context. Results from qualitative interviews with one Finnish Papilio trainer, 11 early childhood education (ECE) teachers, two ECE special education tea…

The involvement of autistic children in early childhood education

2023

Research on the involvement of autistic children in daily activities in inclusive early childhood education is scarce. In Finland, all children, including autistic children, under the age of seven (before basic education) are entitled to participate in early childhood education and care. Children also attend compulsory, free-of-charge pre-primary education during the year before their basic education begins. Furthermore, attending early childhood education and care is not dependent whether a child requires day care because of their parents’ work. Autistic children attend early childhood education in inclusive day care centres. Thus, in this study, we examined the involvement of autistic chi…

Introduction. The Global Old-Age Care Industry. Tapping into Care Labor Across and Within National Borders

2021

A few weeks after the first COVID-19 infections were diagnosed in Germany, NGOs and experts in the field of old-age care warned of acute bottlenecks in the provision of care for older Germans. They feared that care workers from Eastern Europe who were travelling back to their home countries might not be able to return to Germany due to the closure of borders. As a result, up to 200,000 migrant care workers could be missing after Easter. The weekly German magazine Der Spiegel quoted one NGO’s spokesperson saying: “We already had a shortage of care workers, the crisis has been here for a long time.” Another NGO’s spokesperson was particularly concerned about older people in need of care who w…

European Union commitment towards RES market penetration: From the first legislative acts to the publication of the recent guidelines on State aid 20…

2015

Abstract During the last three decades, the European Union (EU) commitment towards the Renewable Energy Sources (RES) market penetration has been very complex, involving several aspects pertaining to the economic and political action of Member States. This paper seeks to overview the historical development of the legislative EU framework, including a description of the main financial programmes established and managed by the EU Directorates General. Moreover, the work will proceed with the picture of some Investment Funds, ad hoc created for RES undertakings, and managed by the European Investment Bank (EIB) in collaboration with the EU or other foreign Bank Institutes. The delicate matter …

Health sector spending and spending on HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria, and development assistance for health: progress towards Sustainable Devel…

2020

BACKGROUND: Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3 aims to "ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages". While a substantial effort has been made to quantify progress towards SDG3, less research has focused on tracking spending towards this goal. We used spending estimates to measure progress in financing the priority areas of SDG3, examine the association between outcomes and financing, and identify where resource gains are most needed to achieve the SDG3 indicators for which data are available. METHODS: We estimated domestic health spending, disaggregated by source (government, out-of-pocket, and prepaid private) from 1995 to 2017 for 195 countries and territories. For …
