(A)symptomatic necrotizing arteritis of the female genital tract.

2000

Abstract Aims: The vasculitides represent a heterogenous set of disorders that differ in prognosis and response to therapy. Beside systemic vasculitides, the development of localized forms of arteritis is well known though uncommon and the etiopathogenesis is not yet definitely clear. Methods: Patients with necrotizing arteritis of the female genital tract proven by histology are studied in a retrospective analysis. Results: Three cases of necrotizing arteritis with histological features of panarteritis nodosa apparently confined to the female genital tract are presented. None of these patients had prior history of systemic vasculitis. The acute necrotizing vasculitis was confined only to t…

Can Orthopantomography be used as a tool for screening of carotid atheromatous pathology and thus be used to help reduce the prevalence of ischemic s…

2012

Objective: To assess the possibility of Dentists being able to screen patients with higher risk of vascular diseases. Materials: Kodak 8000C Orthopantomographer, eco-Doppler Logiq-500 General Electric at the Lisbon Hospital Particular. Methods: Assessment of orthopantomographies made to 142 patients aged 50 or more, as well as the existing risk factors. Conduction of carotid eco-Doppler to patients who appear to have calcified plaques of the atheroma. Results: Strong dependence between dichotomised age and having the pathology (p = 0.02).Smokers are twice more likely to present plaques (OR= 2). Being hypertensive increases in about 1.4 the likelihood of having a stroke (OR= 1.4). Of the 27 …

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy associated with polyarteritis nodosa: A case of sudden cardiac death

2018

This case concerns a rare sudden cardiac death characterized by macroscopic and microscopic postmortem findings of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and polyarteritis nodosa. A complete autopsy was carried out, and histological and histochemical methods were employed. The cause of death was acute multifocal ischemic myocitolitic damage caused by both myocardial structural alteration attributable to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (widespread interstitial fibrosis and multifocal myocyte disarray) and coronary arteritis attributable to polyarteritis nodosa. This is the first case in which the cause of death was attributed to both diseases.

Use of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography-computed tomography in patients affected by polymyalgia rheumatica and persistent increase…

2022

Polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) is an inflammatory disease affecting older adults characterized by aching pain and morning stiffness of the shoulder and pelvic girdles. Moreover, PMR can be associated with giant cell arteritis (GCA). Generally, PMR is highly responsive to steroids, reaching complete remission in the majority of cases. However, the possibility of occult diseases, including extra-cranial GCA, should be excluded. 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (18F-FDG-PET) is able to detect the presence of peri-/articular or vascular inflammation, which may be both present in PMR, thus representing a useful diagnostic tool, mainly in presence of extra-cranial GCA. We retrosp…

CD3 immunohistochemistry is helpful in the diagnosis of giant cell arteritis.

2018

Objective. To evaluate whether CD3 staining performed routinely on temporal artery biopsy specimens might improve the sensitivity of temporal artery biopsy in patients with biopsy-negative GCA. Methods. Two hundred and seventy biopsies were considered for this study, stained with haematoxylin and eosin and with an anti-CD3 antibody. Results. The addition of CD3 staining modified the sensibility and the specificity of the histologic examination in 89.47 and 95.00%, respectively, with a positive and negative predictive values of 97.00 and 79.78%. Conclusion. The addition of CD3 immunostaining to the classic histologic evaluation is accompanied by a significant increase in the sensibility with…

Management of giant cell arteritis: Recommendations of the French Study Group for Large Vessel Vasculitis (GEFA).

2016

Abstract Purpose Management of giant cell arteritis (GCA, Horton's disease) involves many uncertainties. This work was undertaken to establish French recommendations for GCA management. Methods Recommendations were developed by a multidisciplinary panel of 33 physicians, members of the French Study Group for Large Vessel Vasculitis (Groupe d’etude francais des arterites des gros vaisseaux [GEFA]). The topics to be addressed, selected from proposals by group members, were assigned to subgroups to summarize the available literature and draft recommendations. Following an iterative consensus-seeking process that yielded consensus recommendations, the degree of agreement among panel members was…

Takayasu's disease effects on the kidneys: current perspectives.

2018

Takayasu arteritis (TA) is a chronic vasculitis disease of unknown etiology. Clinically significant renal disease is relatively common, and renovascular hypertension is the major renal problem. The assessment of TA activity is usually challenging because vascular inflammation may progress to fixed vascular injury without findings of active disease. Until now, the best therapeutic options have not been identified. This review highlights the current perspectives of renal involvement in TA.
