A Validation Study of Classroom Assessment Scoring System-Secondary in the Finnish School Context
2018
This study examined the reliability and validity of the Classroom Assessment Scoring System–Secondary (CLASS-S) in Finnish classrooms. Trained observers coded classroom interactions based on video recordings of 46 Grade 6 classrooms (450 cycles). Concurrent associations were investigated with respect to teacher self-ratings (e.g., efficacy beliefs and teaching-related stress). Confirmatory factor analysis showed that the hypothesized three-factor structure of the original CLASS-S (Emotional Support, Organizational Support, and Instructional Support), with some modifications, provided a better fit for the data compared with one- and two-factor structures. Structural validity was demonstrated…
Visual cues improve students’ understanding of divergence and curl: Evidence from eye movements during reading and problem solving
2019
The coordination of multiple external representations is important for learning, but yet a difficult task for students, requiring instructional support. The subject in this study covers a typical relation in physics between abstract mathematical equations (definitions of divergence and curl) and a visual representation (vector field plot). To support the connection across both representations, two instructions with written explanations, equations, and visual representations (differing only in the presence of visual cues) were designed and their impact on students’ performance was tested. We captured students’ eye movements while they processed the written instruction and solved subsequent c…
(Dis)empowering assessment? : assessment as experienced by students in their upper secondary school EFL studies
2017
Assessment has a great deal of power over students. However, there is little research on how students experience assessment and its power in the school context. The purpose of this mixed-methods study is therefore to examine how students in one Finnish upper secondary school experienced assessment and (dis)empowerment in their EFL studies. The present study, which situates itself within the realm of teacher research, also aims to experiment with alternative assessment methods in order to investigate whether they could foster empowerment in upper secondary EFL studies. The study comprises five articles and a monograph, and is divided into two parts, each with its own research aims. Part 1 an…
Iranian EFL Teachers’ Assessment Literacy Knowledge : The Impact of The Educational System on Teachers’ Classroom Assessment Practices
2022
English language teachers’ assessment ability to assess all areas of pupils’ learning is important for comprehending how learners advance across the curriculum and guiding them in their development (Livingston & Hutchinson, 2016). The educational system of Iran decided to shift from traditional teaching methodologies toward communicative approaches. This conversion would not turn into reality unless teachers could apply it in practice. However, teachers have certain needs such as expanding and broadening contextual-related knowledge, cooperating with their colleagues, and developing their assessment literacy (Coombe, Vafadar, & Mohebbi, 2020). To identify the teachers’ understandings of, pr…

Developing a Method for Measuring Science and Technology Oriented Creativity (STOC)
2021
Abstract The article contains the results of a research within the STIMEY (Science, Technology, Innovation, Mathematics, Engineering for the Young) project funded by the European Union’s Horizon-2020 research and innovation program (2016-2021). In the project, a hybrid learning environment (LE) was developed for both on-site and online learning suitable for the learning conditions in the COVID-19 era and beyond. The purpose of the research segment presented in this paper was to develop an instrument for assessment of the learner’s progress in creativity as one of the key targets of STIMEY. COVID-19 has shown that creativity is also needed to allow education systems the flexibility for unexp…
Oppilaiden käsityksiä englannin suullisesta kielitaidosta, sen oppimisesta ja arvioinnista
2018
This study investigated Finnish pupils’ beliefs about English oral proficiency, its learning and assessment in order to give voice to the pupils themselves as well as to better understand their views on English oral proficiency. The data consisted of nine semistructured interviews and self-evaluations and peer evaluations of nine 9th graders from three Finnish basic education schools. The study was qualitative in its nature, and the data were mainly analysed using content analysis. The results showed that the pupils understood English oral proficiency as an ability to speak and interact intelligibly in English. The most important components were seen to be pronunciation, vocabulary and gram…
Oral competence in upper secondary school teaching : teachers and students' views
2013
