Purpose We report our experience with a novel surgical device for the treatment of lumbar degenerative microinstability. Facet Wedge (DePuy Synthes, Raynham, Massachusetts, United States) is a novel technique of intra-articular lumbar facet fixation that provides a minimally invasive alternative to standard posterior fixation. Materials and Methods From November 2014 to July 2015, 38 patients underwent single-level Facet Wedge implantation. Spinal anaesthesia in a patient with post-spine surgery dural ectasia.

Dural sac ectasia is a very infrequent anatomical abnormality, usually caused by connective tissue diseases, as Marfan syndrome. Very few cases have been described being a consequence of a previous spine surgical procedure. We describe the case of an elderly patient who should be operated on twice due to sub-occlusive colon disease. Surgery was performed under spinal anaesthesia. A dural sac ectasia was suspected after the first procedure and the abdominal X-ray was reviewed. The characteristics of the anatomical alteration and the course of both anaesthetic procedures were described. X-ray and CT images were provided.

The ultrasonic axial transmission technique has been proposed as a method for cortical bone characterization. Using a low enough center frequency, Lamb modes can be excited in long bones. Lamb waves propagate throughout the cortical bone layer, which makes them appealing for characterizing bone material and geometrical properties. The role of biosilica in the osteoprotegerin/RANKL ratio in human osteoblast-like cells

Abstract Earlier studies have demonstrated that biosilica, synthesized by the enzyme silicatein, induces hydroxyapatite formation in osteoblast-like SaOS-2 cells. Here we study the effect of biosilica on the expressions of osteoprotegerin [OPG] and the receptor activator for NF-κB ligand [RANKL] in the SaOS-2 cell model. We show that during growth of SaOS-2 cells on biosiliceous matrices hydroxyapatite formation is induced, while syntheses of cartilaginous proteoglycans and sulfated glycosaminoglycans are down-regulated. Leg and joint stiffness in human hopping

The present study investigated the regulation of leg and joint stiffness in hopping at different intensity levels. Eight male subjects performed bilateral hopping at various intensity levels that were determined by peak vertical ground reaction force (GRF). In addition to the GRF, the measurements included hopping kinematics and electromyography (EMG) of selected leg muscles. While the leg and ankle joint stiffness remained invariant, the knee joint stiffness increased significantly (P<0.01) with the hopping intensity. PURPOSE To compare three techniques with regards to their ability to estimate pull out strength of spinal fusion hardware. MATERIAL AND METHODS VDS-screw fixation strength in 50 human cadaveric vertebral bodies was approximated by means of pull out force measurement. Bone quality was assessed by Dual X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA). Quantitative Computed Tomography (QCT) and T2*-relaxation time. Osteosarcoma is a common primary malignant bone tumor producing osteoid or bone. It occurs very infrequently in the jaws and comprises of 4% of the tumour number as compared to the osteosarcoma of the long bones. Lateral connections between muscles provide pathways for myofascial force transmission. To elucidate whether these pathways have functional roles in vivo, we examined whether activation could alter the shear between the soleus (SOL) and lateral gastrocnemius (LG) muscles. We hypothesized that selective activation of LG would decrease the stretch-induced shear between LG and SOL.
