Graph Filtering with Quantization over Random Time-varying Graphs

2019

Distributed graph filters can be implemented over wireless sensor networks by means of cooperation and exchanges among nodes. However, in practice, the performance of such graph filters is deeply affected by the quantization errors that are accumulated when the messages are transmitted. The latter is paramount to overcome the limitations in terms of bandwidth and computation capabilities in sensor nodes. In addition to quantization errors, distributed graph filters are also affected by random packet losses due to interferences and background noise, leading to the degradation of the performance in terms of the filtering accuracy. In this work, we consider the problem of designing graph filte…

FRN and P3 during the Iowa gambling task: The importance of gender.

2020

Previous research has shown gender-related psychobiological differences in risky and competitive strategies that affect win and loss outcomes. In addition, some studies have found differences in the decision-making process, with women taking longer to reach the same performance as men. However, the underlying neural mechanisms remain unclear. The present study aimed to investigate gender differences in behavioral performance and neural correlates during a decision-making task, the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT). Forty healthy young adults (23 men and 17 women) performed the IGT while the feedback-related negativity (FRN) and P3 were recorded as neural correlates of feedback processing. No gender …

Imbalance of Neuronal Excitability as a Cause of Psychic Disorder

1989

Electrical activity of neurons is characterized by an equilibrium between excitation and inhibition, maintained by negative feedback mechanisms at the cellular, synaptic and neurohumoral level. A central mechanism is the interaction between excitatory calcium currents and inhibitory potassium currents, linked by intracellular calcium concentration. These conductances are located in the somato-dendritic part of the neuron and fundamentally influence spontaneous activity and the processing of synaptic input. The electrical equilibrium is altered by different neuromodulators, such as biogenic amines, peptides, and steroids and by several drugs. Neuromodulatory desequilibration towards increase…

GEANT4 simulation of the neutron background of the C6D6 set-up for capture studies at n_TOF

2014

The neutron sensitivity of the C6D6 detector setup used at n_TOF facility for capture measurements has been studied by means of detailed GEANT4 simulations. A realistic software replica of the entire n_TOF experimental hall, including the neutron beam line, sample, detector supports and the walls of the experimental area has beeni mplemented in the simulations. The simulations have been analyzed in the same manner as experimental data, in particular by applying the Pulse Height Weighting Technique. The simulations have been validated against a measurement of the neutron background performed with anatC sample, showing an excellent agreement above 1 keV. At lower energies, an additional compo…

Neutron powder diffraction study in the mixed molecular system (NaCN)1−x(KCN)x

1989

A detailed structural analysis of (NaCN${)}_{1\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{x}}$(KCN${)}_{\mathrm{x}}$ mixed crystals with x=0.02, 0.19, and 0.95 was performed by neutron powder diffraction. The structural parameters of the cubic phases were refined, applying a model of preferred orientations. Different noncubic low-temperature phases were observed for x=0.02 and 0.95. For x=0.02 the antiferroelectric ordering of ${\mathrm{CN}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$ dipoles at low temperatures is accompanied by significant alkali-alkali and alkali-${\mathrm{CN}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$ sublattice shifts. Structural data are presented together with previous results for mixed crystals with x=0.59 and…

Ode laica per Chibok e Leah

2019

The volume contains two short poems by Nigerian Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka -- "No, He Said!", dedicated to Nelson Mandela, from the Author's 1988 well-known collection "Mandela's Earth and Other Poems" and the recent "Mandela Comes to Leah", written purposely for this volume -- and the Author's 2019 long epic poem "A Humanist Ode to Chibok, Leah" denouncing all forms of fundamentalism and fanaticism as opposed to secular humanism. Soyinka pays tribute to the girls abducted in Chibok and to 15 year-old Leah Sharibu, one of the 108 girls abducted in 2018 from Dapchi, comparing her firm refusal to renounce her faith to Nelson Mandela's refusal to compromise his moral stance on Apartheid while…

Implicit Wiener Filtering for Speech Enhancement In Non-Stationary Noise

2021

Speech quality is degraded in the presence of background noise, which reduces the quality of experience (QoE) of the end-user and therefore motivates the usage of speech enhancement algorithms. A large number of approaches have been proposed in this context. However most of them have focused on the case where the noise is stationary, an assumption that seldom holds in practice. For instance, in mobile telephony, noise sources with a marked non-stationary spectral signature include vehicles, machines, and other speakers to name a few. On the other hand, the usage of frequency-domain information in existing algorithms for speech enhancement in non-stationary noise environments can be made mor…

Fuzzy Control Strategy for Cooperative Non-holonomic Motion of Cybercars with Passengers Vibration Analysis

2021

The cybercars are electric road wheeled non-holonomic vehicles with fully automated driving capabilities. They contribute to sustainable mobility and are employed as passenger vehicles. Non-holonomic mechanics describes the motion of the cybercar constrained by non-integrable constraints, i.e. constraints on the system velocities that do not arise from constraints on the configuration alone. First of all there are thus with dynamic nonholonomic constraints, i.e. constraints preserved by the basic Euler-Lagrange equations (Bloch, 2000; Melluso, 2007; Raimondi & Melluso, 2006-a). Of course, these constraints are not externally imposed on the system but rather are consequences of the equations…
