Small-sized granules of biphasic bone substitutes support fast implant bed vascularization

2015

The present study investigated the influence of granule size of 2 biphasic bone substitutes (BoneCeramic® 400-700 μm and 500-1000 μm) on the induction of multinucleated giant cells (MNGCs) and implant bed vascularization in a subcutaneous implantation model in rats. Furthermore, degradation mechanisms and particle phagocytosis of both materials were examined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Both granule types induced tissue reactions involving primarily mononuclear cells and only small numbers of MNGCs. Higher numbers of MNGCs were detected in the group with small granules starting on day 30, while higher vascularization was observed only at day 10 in this group. TEM analysis reve…

P26-S Left and right motor cortical excitability and relationship to motor functions in healthy adolescents

2019

Background The interhemispheric difference in cortical excitability and its relationship to motor functions is unclear. Aim We examined the relationship between handedness, left and right motor cortex excitability and fine and gross motor functions in adolescence. Methods 28 healthy adolescents (age 16–19 years, 19 girls) were studied. Handedness was determined by the Waterloo Handedness Questionnaire. Motor threshold (MT) of the abductor pollicis brevis was measured on both hemispheres using biphasic stimulation, and on the left hemisphere also with monophasic stimulation. Box and block test (BBT) was used for manual dexterity, line run and standing long jump for gross motor tasks. Spearma…

Expression of KIT (CD117) in Biphasic Pulmonary Blastoma. Novel Data on Histogenesis

2003

Biphasic pulmonary blastoma (BPB) is a rare primary neoplasm of the lung and its histogenesis is still uncertain. It has been proposed that BPB is derived from mesoderm or endoderm. Others suggested an origin from a single pluripotential cell. We present a case of a BPB with emphasis on expression of the stem cell factor receptor KIT (CD117). We describe a 61-year-old male patient with a BPB of the upper right lobe. Immunohistochemical analysis was performed using a panel of several antibodies including anti-CD117. Strong cytoplasmic expression of CD117 was found in the epithelium (cytokeratin-positive) as well as in the spindle cells (cytokeratin-negative). Expression of CD117 in both mese…

N-BiPAP vs n-CPAP in term neonate with respiratory distress syndrome

2020

Abstract Background Non-invasive respiratory ventilation has greatly improved the evolution of respiratory distress in neonates, especially for preterm infants, but few studies have investigated the use of non-invasive ventilation (NIV) in term infants. It is useful for neonatologists and nurses to identify the optimal ventilation strategy in terms of effectiveness for this group of newborns. The aim of our study was to investigate what type of respiratory support between nasal Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (nCPAP) or nasal Biphasic Positive Airway Pressure (nBiPAP) is more effective in term neonates with RDS. Methods Our study was a retrospective observational study of 78 full term n…

Augmentation of tibial plateau fractures with an injectable bone substitute: CERAMENT™. Three year follow-up from a prospective study

2015

Background: Reduction of tibial plateau fractures and maintain a level of well aligned congruent joint is key to a satisfactory clinical outcome and is important for the return to pre-trauma level of activity. Stable internal fixation support early mobility and weight bearing. The augmentation with bone graft substitute is often required to support the fixation to mantain reduction. For these reasons there has been development of novel bone graft substitutes for trauma applications and in particular synthetic materials based on calcium phosphates and/or apatite combined with calcium sulfates. Injectable bone substitutes can optimize the filling of irregular bone defects. The purpose of this…

Testing the ontogenetic base for the transient model of inflorescence development

2013

† Backgrounds and Aims: Current research in plant science has concentrated on revealing ontogenetic processes of key attributes in plant evolution. One recently discussed model is the ‘transient model’ successful in explaining some types of inflorescence architectures based on two main principles: the decline of the so called ‘vegetativeness’ (veg) factor and the transient nature of apical meristems in developing inflorescences. This study examines whether both principles find a concrete ontogenetic correlate in inflorescence development. † Methods: To test the ontogenetic base of veg decline and the transient character of apical meristems the ontogeny of meristematic size in developing inf…

High crystallinity polyethylene obtained in biphasic polymerization using pyridinium chloroaluminate ionic liquid

2014

A series of N-n-alkylpyridinium chloroaluminate ionic liquids [C n -py][AlCl4] (where n-alkyl = n-butyl, n-hexyl, and n-octyl) was applied as a medium of the Cp2TiCl2 catalyst, activated by AlEtCl2 or AlEt2Cl, to evaluate the influence of the studied ionic liquids on the performance of the biphasic ionic liquid/hexane ethylene polymerization and the properties of the produced polyethylene (PE). The best results were obtained using N-n-butylpyridinium chloroaluminate. The polyethylene obtained in the biphasic polymerization have the high crystallinity, which was confirmed by DSC, WAXS and PALS methods, as well as the bulk density comparable to commercial HDPE. These unique properties results…

Biphasic pleural mesothelioma in a electrician working in a railway company: Case report and current trends in mesotheliomas in Italy

2018

Background: Mesothelioma is an aggressive tumour that can involve the pleura, the peritoneum, and sometimes other mesothelia, such as the pericardium and the tunica vaginalis testis. Scientific communities have known for a long time the causal correlation between exposure to asbestos (work related or not) and the onset of the disease (in 75% - 90% of cases) and the increasing number of asbestos-correlated mesotheliomas expected in the next years. Case presentation: The authors present the case of an electrician, 66-year-old man, died for pleural mesothelioma, working in Palermo in the company of the Italian Railways for a period of about 20 years, exposed to asbestos. Frequently he disassem…

Biphasic ethylene polymerisation using ionic liquid over a titanocene catalyst activated by an alkyl aluminium compound

2007

Abstract 1-n-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrachloroaluminate ([BMIM]+[AlCl4]−) was applied to biphasic ionic liquid/hexane ethylene polymerisation as a medium of the Cp2TiCl2 titanocene catalyst activated by alkylaluminium compounds (MAO, AlEt2Cl, AlEt3). The best results were obtained using AlEt2Cl. The results show that catalyst recycling, higher ethylene pressure, and greater Al/Ti molar ratio along with a greater volume of the ionic liquid phase enhance catalyst activity. The polyethylene gathered from the hexane phase is characterised primarily by its high purity. Its physical properties remain polyethylene obtained over a heterogeneous metallocene catalyst. Thus, biphasic ionic liquid …

Improvement of biphasic polymerization by application of binary ionic liquid mixture

2013

Abstract The mixture of two ionic liquids, 1- n -butyl-3-methylimidazolium and 1-(2-phenylethyl)-3-methylimidazolium chloroaluminates, [C 4 -mim][AlCl 4 ] and [PhC 2 -mim][AlCl 4 ], were applied as a medium to immobilize the Cp 2 TiCl 2 titanocene catalyst for biphasic ionic liquid/hexane ethylene polymerization. The system makes possible to perform the reaction at lower temperatures, below the melting temperature of the aralkyl ionic liquid. A better separation of the ionic liquid phase was observed and an easier mass transfer of the polymer product from the ionic liquid to the hexane phase was obtained. The polyethylene reveals bimodal distribution of molecular weight. It is characterized…
