OBJECTIVE: Elevated blood pressure is an important risk factor for cardiovascular disease and stroke. Several studies have demonstrated that physical exercise reduces blood pressure levels in hypertensive subjects and improves control of several well-known risk factors for atherosclerosis such as diabetes mellitus, blood lipid profile and obesity. These patients have a reduced coronary flow reserve and abnormal endothelium-dependent vasodilator responses; this syndrome is known as microvascular angina. Metabolic syndrome in subjects with white-coat hypertension: impact on left ventricular structure and function

Some reports have suggested that white-coat hypertension (WCH) is associated with some features of the metabolic syndrome (MetS). These metabolic disturbances, instead of WCH per se, may potentially explain the greater extent of end-organ damage sometimes observed in WCH subjects (WCHs) when compared to normotensive individuals (NTs). The aim of the present cross-sectional study was to compare left ventricular (LV) structure and function in three groups of subjects: WCHs with MetS, WCHs without MetS and NTs. Effect of dual blockade of renin–angiotensin system on TGFβ1 and left ventricular structure and function in hypertensive patients

The effects of 24 weeks losartan and ramipril treatment, both alone and in combination, on left ventricular mass (LVM), circulating transforming growth factor beta1 (TGFbeta1), procollagen type I (PIP) and III (PIIIP), have been evaluated in hypertensive (HT) patients. Patients and methods This cross-sectional study involved 393 never treated hypertensive patients (166 women).
