Citizen science for scientific literacy and the attainment of sustainable development goals in normal education

2020

Curricular integration of the formal teaching of citizen science can bring to the classroom aspects of scientific literacy that encourage the involvement of citizens. In particular, these include non-epistemic aspects related to the sociology of science (which are often not transferred to the classroom). Furthermore, this practice raises awareness among students, and encourages them to become participants in the attainment of the United Nations&rsquo

Öffnung für alle

2017

The printing press played a major role in the emergence of an open science system. The Mertonian scientific norms reflect this openness. They also demonstrate, however, that science understands itself as a profession of certified experts. The openness of science was enabled by social closure. Open science challenges this social closure of scientific practice.

Transnational Struggle for Recognition: Axel Honneth on the Embodied Dignity of Stateless Persons

2021

In the last 15 years, scholars have increasingly applied Axel Honneth’s recognition theory to global issues such as justice, poverty, solidarity, peace, cosmopolitanism, and climate change. UNHCR estimates that there are currently 12 million stateless people worldwide. Their citizenship rights and human rights are mis-recognized. As humans, their human rights and human dignity should be protected. However, this requires being a citizen of a state, which, by definition, excludes stateless people. Although representing a fairly large group among today’s irregular migrants, within the above Honneth scholarship, statelessness is seldom investigated. And if being explored, the primary focus is r…

Current challenges and prospective analysis of the Third Sector of Social Action (TSSA) in Spain

2020

This paper analyses the current conditions and future challenges faced by the Third Sector of Social Action (TSSA) in Spain to consolidate itself as an institutional sphere of sustainable welfare and as a strategic actor in the development of social policies. The empirical basis of this work has been obtained with the use of qualitative methods such as in-depth interviews, focus groups and the mixed method of Delphi. The use of these methods is aimed at interpreting TSSA leaders' discourses, the collective voice of Non-governmental organisations (NGO) managers and representatives, and the opinions of experts on: the nature and past development of the sector. This research was carried out un…

A systematic narrative review of prosociality in educational leadership

2018

Organizational scholars have vigorously and long studied being prosocial in defining ‘prosociality’ as motivation, behavior, and impact to help or benefit others. This study attempts to provide an overview of previous studies that have approached the elements of being prosocial in educational leadership contexts. However, most of the prosocial elements in education are not explicitly defined as prosociality and have not yet been systematically studied. Thus, this study explored the research questions: (a) What elements could be involved in prosociality within educational leadership? (b) Who could be involved in the process of prosociality in educational leadership? The final corpus of this …

Adolfo Bioy Casares: la ficción biopolítica

2017

ABSTRACTMost academic works on Adolfo Bioy Casares can be put into two categories: those that stress Bioy Casares's political ideas and those that emphasize his mastery of the fantastic genre as if he were two different writers at once. Can we read a politics of the fantastic in his works? Beyond the Peronist polemics in which Casares's books are framed, if we take into consideration the existential logic that runs through his novels—always in the boundaries between life and death, dream and reality, body and spirit, etc.—we note an exploration of the body and living, of the human and the animal. This exploration is informed by scientific laws that progressively invade the spheres of subjec…

PPGIS applied to environmental communication and hazards for a community-based approach: a dualism in the Southern Italy "calanchi" landscape

2021

<p>The need of protection of the territory is a priority for the society, which is an integral part of it (unfortunately, this coincidence is often forgotten): the new environmental issues require the development of innovative management strategies and of appropriate knowledge and models. The balanced use of resources, essential for the survival and well-being of society, can be optimised through the promotion of the territory. The identification and the sustainable development of local resources can only be achieved by directing development policies towards a path of integration between ecological needs, protection of the landscape and socio-economic and cultural nee…

Service learning and the attitudes of university students to the community

2017

Localising SDGs in Rural Uganda: Learning Active Citizenship Through the Saemaul Undong Model

2021

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are premised on the principles of ‘leaving no one behind’ and transformative development. Achieving the goals requires active citizens that are engaged in community development and claiming their rights. The chapter explores the ways in which a local NGO uses Saemaul Undong (SMU), a Korean community development model, to localise holistic achievement of a number of SDGs. Drawing on theories of the travel of global ideas in institutional sociology and based on participatory research including in-depth interviews, focus group discussions and participation in community activities, the chapter analyses how SMU’s three pillars of self-help, diligence and …
