Effects of non-tracking solar collector orientation on energy production : photovoltaic systems

2012

Abstract: This Master's thesis proposes a new method for calculating the optimum tilt and orientation angle of a fitted solar collector. In addition to using geographical data, this method takes into account the radiation data and weather statistics of prospective locations. This makes the calculations valid not only for certain latitudes, but also for certain radiation and weather conditions. Calculations were done by estimating the energy production of a given solar array using a sequence of different tilt angles and orientation angles. Special attention was given to shaded solar arrays and arrays made up of photovoltaic modules. Specific radiation and weather data was used for both locat…

Membership negotiation in the first workplace : newcomers' experiences

2020

PurposeThis qualitative study aims to understand young professional newcomers' experiences of communication processes in membership negotiation in their first workplace after graduation.Design/methodology/approachInstead of a one-time interview, the participants were contacted five to ten times during the three to ten months, beginning when they entered the workplace. The data were analyzed using a constant comparative method.FindingsThree communication processes during membership negotiation were identified: developing reciprocity, seeking and perceiving acceptance and becoming an active member. To experience membership, newcomers need to achieve acceptance and engage in reciprocal communi…

Examining Open Innovation in Science (OIS): what Open Innovation can and cannot offer the science of science

2021

Scholars across disciplines increasingly hear calls for more open andcollaborative approaches to scientific research. The concept of OpenInnovation in Science (OIS) provides a framework that integratesdispersed research efforts aiming to understand the antecedents, contingencies, and consequences of applying open and collaborativeresearch practices. While the OIS framework has already been taken upby science of science scholars, its conceptual underpinnings requirefurther specification. In this essay, we critically examine the OIS conceptand bring to light two key aspects: 1) how OIS builds upon OpenInnovation (OI) research by adopting its attention to boundary-crossingknowledge flows and by…

Benson group additivity values of phosphines and phosphine oxides: Fast and accurate computational thermochemistry of organophosphorus species

2018

Composite quantum chemical methods W1X-1 and CBS-QB3 are used to calculate the gas phase standard enthalpy of formation, entropy, and heat capacity of 38 phosphines and phosphine oxides for which reliable experimental thermochemical information is limited or simply nonexistent. For alkyl phosphines and phosphine oxides, the W1X-1, and CBS-QB3 results are mutually consistent and in excellent agreement with available G3X values and empirical data. In the case of aryl-substituted species, different computational methods show more variation, with G3X enthalpies being furthest from experimental values. The calculated thermochemical data are subsequently used to determine Benson group additivity …

STUDIES OF VARIABILITY IN PROTO-PLANETARY NEBULAE. II. LIGHT AND VELOCITY CURVE ANALYSES OF IRAS 22272+5435 AND 22223+4327

2013

We have carried out a detailed observational study of the light, color, and velocity variations of two bright, carbon-rich proto-planetary nebulae, IRAS 22223+4327 and 22272+5435. The light curves are based upon our observations from 1994 to 2011, together with published data by Arkhipova and collaborators. They each display four significant periods, with primary periods for IRAS 22223+4327 and 22272+5435 being 90 and 132 days, respectively. For each of them, the ratio of secondary to primary period is 0.95, a value much different from that found in Cepheids, but which may be characteristic of post-asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. Fewer significant periods are found in the smaller radia…

Pulsating B and Be stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud

2008

Context: Stellar pulsations in main-sequence B-type stars are driven by the kappa-mechanism due to the Fe-group opacity bump. The current models do not predict the presence of instability strips in the B spectral domain at very low metallicities. As the metallicity of the SMC is lower than Z=0.005, it constitutes a very suitable object to test these predictions. Aims: The main objective is to investigate the existence of B-type pulsators at low metallicities, searching for short-term periodic variability in absorption-line B and Be stars in the SMC. The analysis has been performed in a sample of 313 B and Be stars with fundamental astrophysical parameters accurately determined from high-res…

The Hajłasz Capacity Density Condition is Self-improving

2022

We prove a self-improvement property of a capacity density condition for a nonlocal Hajlasz gradient in complete geodesic spaces with a doubling measure. The proof relates the capacity density condition with boundary Poincare inequalities, adapts Keith-Zhong techniques for establishing local Hardy inequalities and applies Koskela-Zhong arguments for proving self-improvement properties of local Hardy inequalities. This leads to a characterization of the Hajlasz capacity density condition in terms of a strict upper bound on the upper Assouad codimension of the underlying set, which shows the self-improvement property of the Hajlasz capacity density condition. Open Access funding provided than…

Static instability analysis of an elastic band travelling in the gravitational field

2011

Static instability analysis is performed for an axially moving elastic band, which is travelling at a constant velocity in a uniform gravitational field between two supports. The buckling of the band is investigated with the help of admitting small transverse deflections. The model of a thin elastic beam (panel) subjected to bending, centrifugal forces and nonhomogeneous tension (including a gravitational term) is used. Buckling analysis and estimation of the critical velocities of elastic instability are based on variational principles and variational inequalities. As a result, explicit formulas for upper and lower limits for critical velocities are found. It is shown analytically that a c…
