Total plasma protein in very preterm babies: prognostic value and comparison with illness severity scores
2013
International audience; OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate the predictive value for severe adverse outcome of plasma protein measurements on day one of life in very preterm infants and to compare total plasma protein levels with the validated illness severity scores CRIB, CRIB-II, SNAP-II and SNAPPE-II, regarding their predictive ability for severe adverse outcome. METHODS: We analyzed a cohort of infants born at 24-31 weeks gestation, admitted to the tertiary intensive care unit of a university hospital over 10.5 years. The outcome measure was "severe adverse outcome" defined as death before discharge or severe neurological injury on cranial ultrasound. The adjusted odd ratio (aOR) and 95%…
Efficacy of Selected Electrical Therapies on Chronic Low Back Pain: A Comparative Clinical Pilot Study
2017
Background: In the currently available research publications on electrical therapy of low back pain, generally no control groups or detailed randomization were used, and such studies were often conducted with relatively small groups of patients, based solely on subjective questionnaires and pain assessment scales (lacking measurement methods to objectify the therapeutic progress). The available literature also lacks a comprehensive and large-scale clinical study. The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of treating low back pain using selected electrotherapy methods. The study assesses the influence of individual electrotherapeutic treatments on reduction of pain, improvement of …
Trait self-control and self-discipline : Structure, validity, and invariance across national groups
2021
The aim of the present study was to test the validity of the Brief Self-Control Scale (BSCS; Tangney, Baumeister and Boone 2004) including its dimensional structure based on competing one- and two-factor models, discriminant validity from the conceptually-related self-discipline construct, invariance across multiple samples from different national groups, and predictive validity with respect to health-related behaviors. Samples of undergraduate students (total N = 1282) from four national groups completed the brief self-control scale, the self-discipline scale from the NEO-PI-R, and self-report measures of binge drinking, exercise, and healthy eating. Confirmatory factor analytic models sup…
Emergency Clinical Trials
2010
Emergency clinical trials involve the administration of the study drug to healthy human volunteers or to patients under the supervision of a qualified investigator, usually a physician, pursuant to a reviewed protocol. Research in this field continues to grow because this department is often considered as a desirable place to conduct clinical research due to the broad and undifferentiated spectrum of acute conditions encountered. There are some specific aspects when studying emergency medicine that have to be taken into account. One of them is the emphasis on ultrarapid diagnosis and treatment to save the critically ill emergency patient. Keywords: emergency medicine; clinical trials; diagn…
Using an integrated social cognition model to predict COVID‐19 preventive behaviours
2020
ObjectivesRates of novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infections have rapidly increased worldwide and reached pandemic proportions. A suite of preventive behaviours have been recommended to minimize risk of COVID-19 infection in the general population. The present study utilized an integrated social cognition model to explain COVID-19 preventive behaviours in a sample from the Iranian general population.DesignThe study adopted a three-wave prospective correlational design.MethodsMembers of the general public (N = 1,718, Mage = 33.34, SD = 15.77, male = 796, female = 922) agreed to participate in the study. Participants completed self-report measures of demographic characteristics, i…
Gemcitabine plus vinorelbine in stage IIIB or IV non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC): A multicentre phase II clinical trial
2001
Abstract A phase II study in patients with stage IIIB/IV non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) was carried out to evaluate the clinical activity and toxicity of the chemotherapeutic combination of gemcitabine+vinorelbine (GEM/VNR). Forty-five patients (40 male, 5 female) with a median age of 67 years (range 37–73) and a median ECOG performance status of 1 (range 0–2) were enrolled into the trial. Twenty patients had stage IIIB (two positive supraclavicular nodes and 20 cytologically positive pleural effusion), and 25 had stage IV NSCLC. GEM 1000 mg/m 2 diluted in 250 cc 3 of normal saline was administered iv on days 1, 8, and 15, while VNR was given 30 mg/m 2 on days 1 and 8 every 4 weeks. The…
The European Sleep Apnoea Database (ESADA) ERS Clinical Research Collaboration: past, present and future
2018
There are some critical issues that determine the sustainability of the ESADA project in the long term. We need to develop strategies to maintain high data quality and enable new research activities related to the database. Funding may be provided by public and academic institutions or by collaborations with industry. We plan to submit EU research or public health projects, and cooperation with other cohorts will help to reach the critical mass necessary to cover the entire European area. Again, the CRC is a very good opportunity to pursue this goal, not only for the visibility provided by the endorsement of a leading society like the ERS, but also for the practical support in submission of…
Validation and utility of ARDS subphenotypes identified by machine-learning models using clinical data: an observational, multicohort, retrospective …
2022
Item does not contain fulltext BACKGROUND: Two acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) subphenotypes (hyperinflammatory and hypoinflammatory) with distinct clinical and biological features and differential treatment responses have been identified using latent class analysis (LCA) in seven individual cohorts. To facilitate bedside identification of subphenotypes, clinical classifier models using readily available clinical variables have been described in four randomised controlled trials. We aimed to assess the performance of these models in observational cohorts of ARDS. METHODS: In this observational, multicohort, retrospective study, we validated two machine-learning clinical classifie…
A phase II study of carboplatin and paclitaxel as first line chemotherapy in elderly patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC)
2006
Introduction: Lung cancer is the leading cause of tumour-related deaths in the elderly population but the optimal management of advanced NSCLC in older patients has not been defined to date. The present phase II study was planned to evaluate the efficacy and toxicity of the combination of carboplatin and paclitaxel in elderly patients with advanced NSCLC. Patients and methods: Patients (>70 years old) who had pathologically been proven to have a NSCLC and measurable lesions were treated with paclitaxel (175 mg/m2for 3 h) and carboplatin [area under the concentration-time curve (AUC = 5)] on day 1 every 3 weeks. Results: Forty patients were enrolled into the study. The median age was 74 year…
Phase II study of pemetrexed and cisplatin plus cetuximab followed by pemetrexed and cetuximab maintenance therapy in patients with advanced nonsquam…
2013
Abstract Objectives The aim was to determine if combined pemetrexed, cisplatin, and cetuximab was efficacious and safe as first-line treatment in advanced nonsquamous non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Patients and methods In this single-arm, multicenter clinical trial, patients with Stage IIIB/IV nonsquamous NSCLC received first-line therapy consisting of pemetrexed (500mg/m 2 ) and cisplatin (75mg/m 2 ) on Day 1 (21-day cycles) plus weekly cetuximab (400mg/m 2 loading dose, then 250mg/m 2 ) for 4–6 cycles. Non-progressing patients received maintenance therapy consisting of pemetrexed and cetuximab as above until disease progression. All patients received vitamin supplementation, dexameth…
