Interaction between the deep fluids and the shallow groundwaters on Vulcano island (Italy)
2001
The aim of this work is to study the interactions processes between the fluids of deep origin and the shallow groundwaters of the Vulcano Porto area. During 1995, 13 well waters were sampled three times (May, July and November) and analysed for major and some minor elements (B, Br and NH4) and for dissolved gases. The close relationship of these waters with the deep magmatic source is highlighted by the composition of the dissolved gases. Furthermore, the areal distribution of dissolved species is controlled mainly by the gas fluxes from depth and by the presence of a deeper thermal aquifer. The distribution of major anomalies in the parameters measured in the groundwaters, in fact, overlap…
Elevated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in a river floodplain soil due to coal mining activities
2007
Elevated PAH concentrations were found in soil samples collected along the Mosel River. These contaminations were associated with the occurrence of coal particles found in the soil. The majority of the PAH contamination in the soils was linked to coal mining activities in the Saar region. Density and grain size separation showed a similar PAH distribution pattern in all of the fractions, indicating a uniform origin of PAHs. Together with coal petrography a good correlation between TOC and PAHs concentration confirmed the impact of former coal mining activity on the PAHs distribution in study area.
Ganoderma lucidum (Curt.: Fr.) Karst. – health-promoting properties. A review
2015
Summary This paper presents the characteristics of the species Ganoderma lucidum in terms of health-promoting properties. This species is rare in Poland, and is subject to strict protection. Reishi is classified as a medicinal mushroom which fruiting bodies are characterized by a content of active substances with diverse positive effects on human health. G. lucidum is particularly rich source of bioactive compounds, which are obtained from fruiting bodies, mycelium and spores of this species. The therapeutic effect of G. lucidum extracts has been demonstrated in many scientific studies. The most important pharmacological and physiological effects include: immunomodulatory, anti-cancer, anti…
The Application of Supercritical Fluids Technology to Recover Healthy Valuable Compounds from Marine and Agricultural Food Processing By-Products: A …
2021
Food by-products contain a remarkable source of bioactive molecules with many benefits for humans; therefore, their exploitation can be an excellent opportunity for the food sector. Moreover, the revalorization of these by-products to produce value-added compounds is considered pivotal for sustainable growth based on a circular economy. Traditional extraction technologies have several drawbacks mainly related to the consumption of hazardous organic solvents, and the high temperatures maintained for long extraction periods which cause the degradation of thermolabile compounds as well as a low extraction efficiency of desired compounds. In this context, supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) ha…

Reduction and catalytic behaviour of heterobimetallic copper–lanthanide oxides
2008
Abstract The reduction of the heterobimetallic copper–lanthanide oxides 2CuO·CeO2 and 3CuO·Ln2CuO4 (Ln = La, Pr, Nd) was studied by H2-TG/DTA and H2-TPR. All systems exhibit two main reduction steps accompanied by mass losses in the temperature range 20–1000 °C. The first step was attributed to CuO reduction, whereas the second step is due either to copper reduction in the Ln2CuO4 phase with the concomitant formation of Ln2O3 or to the surface reduction of CeO2. The products were characterized by XRD, SEM, EDX, and BET techniques and are better described as supported copper type materials. They were active for the mesityl oxide (4-methyl-2-penten-2-one) gas phase hydrogenation.

Warfarin Guide: Co-design of a Mobile Computer-Assisted Anticoagulant Therapy
2017
Patients with some types of cardiovascular disease are prescribed anticoagulation therapy with Warfarin in order to control the ability of blood clotting. This work presents a co-designed mobile application, called Warfarin Guide, for a computer-assisted anticoagulant therapy. The application addresses the challenges that unexperienced patients may find when having to remember to regularly check their INR values and make temporary adjustments for INR value fluctuations that are not easy to interpret without direct medical advice. nivå1
