Synthetic nanopores with fixed charges: An electrodiffusion model for ionic transport

2003

Synthetic nanopores with fixed charges exhibit ionic equilibrium and transport properties that resemble those displayed by biological ion channels. We present an electrodiffusion model based on the Nernst-Planck flux equations, which allows for a qualitative description of the steady state ionic transport through a nanopore when the membrane fixed charges and all mobile carriers (including the water ions) are properly taken into account. In particular, we study the current-voltage curve, the electrical conductance, the reversal potential (a measure of the nanopore ionic selectivity), as well as the flux inhibition by protons and divalent cations in the nanopore. The model clearly shows how …

Effect of metallacarborane salt H[COSANE] doping on the performance properties of polybenzimidazole membranes for high temperature PEMFCs

2020

[EN] In this paper, a series of composite proton exchange membranes comprising a cobaltacarborane protonated H[Co(C2B9H11)(2)] named (H[COSANE]) and polybenzimidazole (PBI) for a high temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is reported, with the aim of enhancing the proton conductivity of PBI membranes doped with phosphoric acid. The effects of the anion [Co(C2B9H11)(2)] concentration in three different polymeric matrices based on the PBI structure, poly(2,2 '-(m-phenylene)-5,5 '-bibenzimidazole) (PBI-1), poly[2,2 '-(p-oxydiphenylene)-5,5 '-bibenzimidazole] (PBI-2) and poly(2,2 '-(p-hexafluoroisopropylidene)-5,5 '-bibenzimidazole) (PBI-3), have been investigated. The conducti…

Unification of the electrical behavior of defects, impurities, and surface states in semiconductors: Virtual gap states in CdO

2009

In contrast to conventional semiconductors, native defects, hydrogen impurities, and surface states are all found to be donors in $n$-type CdO. Using this as a model system, the electrical behaviors of defects, dopants, and surface states in semiconductors are unified by a single energy level, the charge neutrality level, giving much insight into current materials and allowing a band-structure engineering scheme for obtaining desired custom electronic properties in new compound semiconductors.

Structure and oxide ion conductivity: local order, defect interactions and grain boundary effects in acceptor-doped ceria

2014

The long-range and short-range structure of nanocrystalline and microcrystalline acceptor-doped ceria is investigated by a combined approach using EXAFS, XANES, Raman, and XRD, and correlated with the oxide-ion conductivity in the bulk and in grain boundaries. Compared to Yb3+ and Er3+, the positive influence of Sm3+ is attributed to the ability to repel oxygen vacancies, and to keep a localized disorder around the dopant. The long-range structural analysis shows lattice contraction for Yb- and Er-doping and lattice expansion for Sm-doping. The short-range analysis around the dopants and cerium highlights that a more complex structural rearrangement has to be assumed to explain the compleme…

Superior energy density through tailored dopant strategies in multilayer ceramic capacitors

2020

The Gerson–Marshall (1959) relationship predicts an increase in dielectric breakdown strength (BDS) and therefore, recoverable energy density (Wrec) with decreasing dielectric layer thickness. This relationship only operates however, if the total resistivity of the dielectric is sufficiently high and the electrical microstructure is homogeneous (no short circuit diffusion paths). BiFeO3–SrTiO3 (BF–ST) is a promising base for developing high energy density capacitors but Bi-rich compositions which have the highest polarisability per unit volume are ferroelectric rather than relaxor and are electrically too conductive. Here, we present a systematic strategy to optimise BDS and maximum polaris…

Study of the Dielectric Properties of Europium Doped Barium Titanate Ceramics by an Impedance Spectroscopy

2015

The barium titanate (BaTiO3) and the BaTiO3 + 0.1wt.% Eu2O3 ceramics were prepared by a conventional ceramic method. The structural studies were carried out by means of an X-ray diffraction technique. The influence of the grains and the grain boundaries on the electrical properties was investigated using a impedance spectroscopy. This technique enables us to determine the values of grain and grain boundary resistance. The results show that the Eu doping leads to a significant reduction in the resistance value of the grains (˜105Ω) with respect to the pure BT ceramics (˜107Ω). The conductivity processes were determined from the Arrhenius behaviour of grain and grain boundary resistances.

Thermal stability and enhanced thermoelectric properties of the tetragonal tungsten bronzes Nb8-xW9+xO47 (0 <x <5)

2017

Thermoelectric materials are believed to play a fundamental role in the energy field over the next years thanks to their ability of directly converting heat into usable electric energy. To increase their integration in the commercial markets, improvements of the efficiencies are needed. At the same time, cheap and non-toxic materials are required along with easily upscalable production cycles. Compounds of the tetragonal tungsten bronze (TTB) series Nb8-xW9+xO47 fulfill all these requirements and are promising materials. Their adaptive structure ensures glass-like values of the thermal conductivity, and the substitution on the cation side allows a controlled manipulation of the electronic p…

Optimization of the carrier concentration in phase-separated half-Heusler compounds

2014

Inspired by the promising thermoelectric properties of phase-separated half-Heusler materials, we investigated the influence of electron doping in the n-type Ti_(0.3−x)Zr_(0.35)Hf_(0.35)NiSn compound. The addition of Nb to this compound led to a significant increase in its electrical conductivity, and shifted the maximum Seebeck coefficient to higher temperatures owing to the suppression of intrinsic carriers. This resulted in an enhancement of both the power factor α^2σ and figure of merit, zT. The applicability of an average effective mass model revealed the optimized electron properties for samples containing Nb. There is evidence in the literature that the average effective mass model i…

Delamination Detection in Carbon Fibre Reinforced Composites Using Electrical Resistance Measurement

2016

In the present study 2-D numerical analysis of strip-type laminated composite specimens with and without damage is considered and numerical investigation is carried out by using a finite element method. The surface and oblique resistances are numerically calculated according to the two-probe and four-probe methods. The electrical conductivity of the composite laminate in the longitudinal direction is constant, while the electrical conductivity in the through-thickness direction is used as a variable in the parametric study. The resistance change due to delamination for each case is estimated by comparing the obtained resistance with the corresponding resistance of the specimen without delam…
