Abstract Crystalline rock has been chosen as the host medium for repository of highly radioactive spent nuclear fuel in Finland. Radionuclide transport takes place along water-carrying fractures, and matrix diffusion has been indicated as an important retarding mechanism that affects the transport of mobile fission and activation products. The model introduced here for matrix diffusion contains a flow channel facing a porous matrix with stagnant water into which tracer molecules advected in the channel can diffuse. Abstract Aim To study the influence on the healing of the placement of particulate autogenous bone in the antrostomy and in the subjacent region after maxillary sinus elevation. Material and methods Sixteen New Zealand rabbits were undergone to bilateral maxillary sinus floor augmentation with 4 × 4 mm antrostomy dimension. The sinus mucosa was elevated, and the space obtained was filled with xenograft. In the test site (treated sites), autogenous bone was harvested from the tibia and was placed either in the antrostomy and the subjacent region while the control site was left untreated. Conversion of Mediterranean maquis and/or natural forest into agro-pastoral lands is a cause of soil degradation in many Mediterranean areas. Indicators of soil physical quality (SPQ) quantitatively linked to soil hydraulic properties are a valuable tool to assess the effect of land use changes. Origin of impulse initiation in the slowly adapting stretch receptor of the crayfish

Characteristic for the crayfish stretch receptor is a gradual decrease in axon diameter up to a stretch of axon about 350 μm away from the soma-axon border. In response to depolarizing currents applied at different positions along the axon this stretch of axon can be localized as the most excitable membrane region. When depolarizing current steps of 10–25 nA intensity are injected into the soma the first impulse is always triggered in the soma (due to sudden rise in the membrane potential) while the second impulse originates at the axon region of highest escitability. Dynamical features of forest interactions

Abstract The 3D computer simulations presented here were developed to study at the mesoscopic scale the formation of junctions and their impact on hardening of crystals. The simulations consider the evolution of a dislocation interacting with immobile dislocations in a fcc single crystal of copper where we incorporate well known dislocation interaction mechanisms. From these studies, we deduced a `breaking angle' which characterize the strength of the junctions.

High frequency resistivity in La2-xSrxCu1-yCoyO4 ceramics

Resitivity measurements have been performed in La:Sr:Cu:Co:O ceramics in a frequency range from 5Hz – 10 9 Hz. A strongly frequency dependent resistance has been observed in La 2 CUO 4 which we interpret in terms of a smooth dielectric to metal transition due to localization effects.

Investigations of the emission properties of single CdS-nanocrystallites

Semiconductor nanocrystallites (NCs) with a radius in the range of the bulk exciton radius exhibit a strong quantum size effect. We investigated CdS-NCs, that were spin coated on a glass cover slip, with a low temperature confocal microscope. At low coverage we could image the fluorescence light from single NCs. The typical emission spectra of single NCs show four peaks. Besides the main peak related to near bandgap recombination, up to two LO-phonon satellites and one blue shifted peak were observed.
