UNO SGUARDO ALLE FONTI SULL’ARCHITETTURA CIVILE TRA QUATTROCENTO E CINQUECENTO IN SICILIA: I CONTRATTI PER ANALOGIA
2021
This study examines the copious contractual documentation related to the construction of civil architecture in Sicily between the 15th and 16th centuries. Taking also into account the legal value of the acts, a series of observations emerge providing a more precise portrait of the masters involved, the architectural design and social behavior of the contractors. A framework of conventions and procedures comes out that combines local characters and long-lasting Mediterranean traditions.
Architectural technologies for life environment: passive cooling strategies in the architectures of the Mediterranean area.
2020
The Mediterranean area is a highly interesting place where various States, characterised by different people, histories, and cultures face. Reigns, religions, powers, state structures, people, nationalities, etc., everything seems to be extremely different and far. On the contrary, there are some cultural points that are much closer than they officially appear. Indeed, historically, the commercial trades between the various countries have always been highly intense and the Christian and Muslim reigns, even if in a continuous state of conflict, were reciprocally linked by deep (financial) interests. Therefore, that translated in a wide trade of goods that moved on the Mediterranean Sea acros…
THE SICILIAN DEFENSIVE SYSTEM: THE COASTAL TOWERS. THEORY AND TECHNIC MEET IN UNIQUE LANDMARKS
2016
Sicily has historically experienced a massive colonial occupation due to its strategic position among the Mediterranean Sea. Still today, its tactical importance is under everybody’s eyes with at least 15 NATO’s headquarters. Thus, it’s easily understandable how defending such a large territory was particularly important which, in turn, meant guarding and protecting more than 1600 km of coasts, leading to a possible supremacy on the trading routes through the Mediterranean area. This work will analyse the Sicilian coastal towers, a real typology that exploited traditional construction technologies and local materials integrated by instances of military engineering, in a continuous relations…
Dalla costruzione alla verità dello spazio
2020
NANO, SMART AND COMPOSITE MATERIALS IN CONSTRUCTION
2018
NANOTECHNOLOGY IN CONSTRUCTION: JUST FASHION OR REAL POTENTIALITIES?
2017
Developments of technology and advances in materials science and engineering are leading to a new generation of products that may represent a competitive route to achieve a real sustainable growth in construction. Currently many nano-based products are available on the global market: smart-materials, nano- composite materials, nano-devices, etc.. Further nanotechnologies enable new developments: materials and products are fast emerging or exist in bulky and expensive forms in other industrial sectors. Anyway, a great deal of research, directly focused in construction’s applications, should be done. This paper is aimed to discuss such an increasing trend and analyses the global market. A gen…
Cap Rate as the Interpretative Variable of the Urban Real Estate Capital Asset: A Comparison of Different Sub‐Market Definitions in Palermo, Italy
2017
Real estate capital is in constant competition with other capital assets due to its different and complementary economic functions such as direct use, productive investment, and speculative investment. These features and the resulting opportunities cannot be easily deduced from direct observation of the real estate markets, so some further insights need to be carried out in order to highlight the relationship between prices, rents and performances. This study aims at providing a multifaceted perspective of a specific urban real estate market to overcome the difficulties arising from opacities and informative asymmetries that hinder the decision of investors, by facilitating the comparison o…
A “Voodoo Doll in Diapers”: Deconstructing the Cruel Child in Lionel Shriver’s We Need to Talk About Kevin (2003)
2018
This chapter examines the ways in which Lionel Shriver’s novel We Need to Talk About Kevin (2003) complicates mainstream representations of young high school shooters. The central argument is that Shriver offers her readers a critical and informed meta-perspective which conceives of childhood as a discursive construct. The chapter illustrates how constructivism arises as a highly ambivalent practice in the novel. One the one hand, it allows the novel to dissect and challenge the patterns according to which school shooters are commonly constructed in the media without, however, confirming any of them as Kevin’s “true” nature. On the other hand, the novel’s engagement with constructivism is b…
Impact of a Social Constructivist Instructional Strategy on Performance in Algebra with a Focus on Secondary School Students
2020
There have been perennial concerns on the low academic performance of students among researchers and other education stakeholders. Innovative teaching strategies have, therefore, gained prominence in the field of mathematics education. The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of a social constructivist instructional strategy on students’ performance in algebra. The present study is quasi-experimental, and its type is a posttest control group involving 154 secondary school students that are randomly selected across four intact classes. The random selection of students to treatment and control controls is assumed to improve the validity of the results. Two research questions are…
