Watch This! The Influence of Recommender Systems and Social Factors on the Content Choices of Streaming Video on Demand Consumers
2021
Streaming Video-on-demand (SVOD) services are getting increasingly popular. Current research, however, lacks knowledge about consumers’ content decision processes and their respective influencing factors. Thus, the work reported on in this paper explores socio-technical interrelations of factors impacting content choices in SVOD, examining the social factors WOM, eWOM and peer mediation, as well as the technological influence of recommender systems. A research model based on the Theory of Reasoned Action and the Technology Acceptance Model was created and tested by an n = 186 study sample. Results show that the quality of a recommender system and not the social mapping functionality is the …

Seam-Based Edge Blending for Multi-Projection Systems
2016
Perceptual seamlessness of large-scale tiled displays is still a challenge. One way to avoid Bezel effects from contiguous displays is to blend superimposed parts of the image over the edges. This work proposes a new approach for edge blending. It is based on intensity edge blending adapted on the seam description of the image content. The main advantage of this method is to reduce visual artifacts thanks to context adaptation and smooth transitions. We evaluate the quality of the method with a perceptual experiment where it is compared with state-of-the-art methods. The new method shows most improvement in low frequency areas compared to the other techniques. This method can be inserted in…
Three-domain image representation for personal photo album management
2010
In this paper we present a novel approach for personal photo album management. Pictures are analyzed and described in three representation spaces, namely, faces, background and time of capture. Faces are automatically detected and rectified using a probabilistic feature extraction technique. Face representation is then produced by computing PCA (Principal Component Analysis). Backgrounds are represented with low-level visual features based on RGB histogram and Gabor filter bank. Temporal data is obtained through the extraction of EXIF (Exchangeable image file format) data. Each image in the collection is then automatically organized using a mean-shift clustering technique. While many system…
An improved distance-based relevance feedback strategy for image retrieval
2013
Most CBIR (content based image retrieval) systems use relevance feedback as a mechanism to improve retrieval results. NN (nearest neighbor) approaches provide an efficient method to compute relevance scores, by using estimated densities of relevant and non-relevant samples in a particular feature space. In this paper, particularities of the CBIR problem are exploited to propose an improved relevance feedback algorithm based on the NN approach. The resulting method has been tested in a number of different situations and compared to the standard NN approach and other existing relevance feedback mechanisms. Experimental results evidence significant improvements in most cases.
Interactive Image Retrieval Using Smoothed Nearest Neighbor Estimates
2010
Relevance feedback has been adopted by most recent Content Based Image Retrieval systems to reduce the semantic gap that exists between the subjective similarity among images and the similarity measures computed in a given feature space. Distance-based relevance feedback using nearest neighbors has been recently presented as a good tradeoff between simplicity and performance. In this paper, we analyse some shortages of this technique and propose alternatives that help improving the efficiency of the method in terms of the retrieval precision achieved. The resulting method has been evaluated on several repositories which use different feature sets. The results have been compared to those obt…
Analysis and Validation of Learning Technology Models, Standards and Specifications
2010
The paper presents a model for the analysis, comparison and validation of standards, specifications and in particular reference models in the field of Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL). The Reference Model Analysis Grid (RMAG) establishes categories of reference models and standards. Based on those categories, a set of criteria for the analysis and validation of standards was elaborated as a part of the ICOPER project that aims at interoperable open content for competency-based TEL. The analysis of standards in this context is targeted at developing a set of validated approaches that lead to a new reference model. Four standards were investigated, taking into account a broad range of aspec…
Research opportunities in performance measurement in public utilities regulation
2015
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to propose a method to choose a set of scientific articles about performance measurement in public utilities regulation. The method is designed to identify references with high academic relevance in databases accessed via the internet, and, through these articles, to perform a mapping of these publications and conduct a systemic analysis. Design/methodology/approach – The study is characterized as exploratory and descriptive with a qualitative and quantitative approach. Incorporates an inductive logic, and draws on primary and secondary data sources. The research involves the application of a technical procedure for selection and study of selected art…

Integrative Pedagogy in Practicum
2011
The chapter introduces a model of integrative pedagogy in teaching practicum within a Finnish context. The aim of this action research project is to integrate educational theory and practice in teaching practicum with a view to promote student teachers professional autonomy. In the Integrative Pedagogy Model, theoretical knowledge, practical skills and self-regulation (reflective and metacognitive skills) are merged. The empirical part of the chapter is based on the content analysis of the experiences of students and their supervising teachers. The results show that an exceptional sense of community is being achieved in this kind of teaching practicum.
