Soluble gp130 is the natural inhibitor of soluble interleukin-6 receptor transsignaling responses
2001
Signal transduction in response to interleukin-6 (IL-6) requires binding of the cytokine to its receptor (IL-6R) and subsequent homodimerization of the signal transducer gp130. The complex of IL-6 and soluble IL-6R (sIL-6R) triggers dimerization of gp130 and induces responses on cells that do not express membrane bound IL-6R. Naturally occurring soluble gp130 (sgp130) can be found in a ternary complex with IL-6 and sIL-6R. We created recombinant sgp130 proteins that showed binding to IL-6 in complex with sIL-6R and inhibited IL-6/sIL-6R induced proliferation of BAF/3 cells expressing gp130. Surprisingly, sgp130 proteins did not affect IL-6 stimulated proliferation of BAF/3 cells expressing …
An interactive surrogate-based method for computationally expensive multiobjective optimisation
2019
Many disciplines involve computationally expensive multiobjective optimisation problems. Surrogate-based methods are commonly used in the literature to alleviate the computational cost. In this paper, we develop an interactive surrogate-based method called SURROGATE-ASF to solve computationally expensive multiobjective optimisation problems. This method employs preference information of a decision-maker. Numerical results demonstrate that SURROGATE-ASF efficiently provides preferred solutions for a decision-maker. It can handle different types of problems involving for example multimodal objective functions and nonconvex and/or disconnected Pareto frontiers. peerReviewed

Revisited mixed-value method via symmetric BEM in the substructuring approach
2012
Abstract Within the Symmetric Boundary Element Method, the mixed-value analysis is re-formulated. This analysis method contemplates the subdivision of the body into substructures having interface kinematical and mechanical quantities. For each substructure an elasticity equation, connecting weighted displacements and tractions to nodal displacements and forces of the same interface boundary and to external action vector, is introduced. The assembly of the substructures is performed through both the strong and weak regularity conditions of the displacements and tractions. We obtain the solving equations where the compatibility and the equilibrium are guaranteed in the domain Ω for the use of…
Flexural Test on a Full-Scale 60-kW Wind Turbine-Tower Telescopic Steel Pipe
2019
A full-scale static test to failure was conducted on 6-m (236.22 in.)-long steel pipes constituting a segment of a telescopic wind tower with a 60-kW wind turbine. The diameter of the circular cross section of the steel pipes was 900 mm (35.43 in.), and the nominal thickness was 10 mm (0.39 in.). The steel grade was 355 MPa (51,488 psi). The tests were conducted in a force-controlled mode in a four-point bending test with a shear-to-span ratio of 2.05. The flexural limit states developed in the form of ovalization of the cross section and of local buckling. The buckling occurred in the plastic range because of the diameter-to-thickness ratio of the section. Although local buckling caused sl…
Lateral flow assays towards point-of-care cancer detection: A review of current progress and future trends
2020
Abstract Cancer is one of the main causes of mortality and morbidity worldwide. However, its early non-invasive detection via quantification of appropriate biomarkers can significantly reduce mortality, enhance survival, and save treatment costs. Lateral flow test strips (LFTS) are nowadays considered as the most attractive point-of-care devices for healthcare applications. However, the quantification of cancer biomarkers in body fluids suffers from some challenges including i) the necessity for multiplex analysis, ii) the development of sensitive detection systems, iii) to overcome the analysis of complex samples, at the same time, it should keep the quality assurance criteria for an accur…
PEM FC Single Cell Based on a 3-D Printed Plastic Housing and Experimental Validation with the Mathematical Model
2018
Abstract This paper presents the design, modelling, and testing of a PEM single fuel cell based on the use of 3D printing. The design of the housings was made of SolidWorks, while MATLAB/SIMULINK were used to model performance. The fabricated cell performed satisfactorily with no leaks of gas, showing that the 3D printing method can be used in the additive manufacturing of fuel cells thus leading to significant cost savings.
