From Global Games to Re-contextualized Games: The Design Process of TekMyst
2011
Designing, developing and testing a game for a specific learning context and then achieving positive results, encourages one to deploy it in other environments. We know however that it is not always possible to successfully transfer artifacts from one learning context to the next. In this chapter we explore the principles to be considered when re-contextualizing a game. We base our analysis on the transfer of a Hypercontextualized Game SciMyst (which was designed and developed for the Joensuu Science Festival) into its re-contextualized version TekMyst (for the Helsinki Museum of Technology). Employing a qualitative approach we review the requirements and design decisions at the hand of fou…
Mathematics and Non-School Gameplay
2015
This chapter investigates the mathematics in the gameplay of three popular games (Angry Birds, Plants vs. Zombies and The Sims) that are unlikely to be played in mathematics lessons. The three games are different but each has been observed to provide opportunity for mathematical activity in gameplay. After describing each game, and the mathematics that can arise in gameplay, the chapter explores two questions: What kind of mathematics is afforded in these games? Can these games be used in/for school mathematics? Issues considered under the first question include: the nature of mathematics and the difficulty of isolating the mathematics in non-school gameplay; players’ strategic actions as m…
Spacetime curvature and Higgs stability after inflation
2015
We investigate the dynamics of the Higgs field at the end of inflation in the minimal scenario consisting of an inflaton field coupled to the Standard Model only through the non-minimal gravitational coupling $\xi$ of the Higgs field. Such a coupling is required by renormalisation of the Standard Model in curved space, and in the current scenario also by vacuum stability during high-scale inflation. We find that for $\xi\gtrsim 1$, rapidly changing spacetime curvature at the end of inflation leads to significant production of Higgs particles, potentially triggering a transition to a negative-energy Planck scale vacuum state and causing an immediate collapse of the Universe.

High boreal forest multifunctionality requires continuous cover forestry as a dominant management
2021
Intensive extraction of forest resources lowers biodiversity and endangers the functioning of forest ecosystems. As such, alternative management regimes have emerged, aspiring to promote forest biodiversity and nature protection in managed forests. Among them, continuous cover forestry, (i.e. selective logging), has received considerable attention and is being promoted by some researchers and NGOs. Yet, the full consequences of banning clear-cuts (i.e. rotation forestry) and replacing it entirely with continuous cover forest remains uncertain. We explore how restricting forest management alternatives (either rotation forestry or continuous cover forestry) will affect landscape-scale forest …
The recreational science as a tool to motivate and improve the acquisition of argumentation skills
2013
The present work consists essentially of an analysis of the use of recreational science (games, toys and recreational experiences playful dial) in formal learning, checking improving student motivation and acquisition of scientific-argumentative to incorporate classroom activities containing elements such recreational.
Il Cabinet d'amateur di Georges Perec
2011
In 1979 one year after the publication of La vie mode d’emploi, George Perec wrote Cabinet d’amateur. Histoire d’un tableau, in which he tells the story of a painting belonging to the genre of the cabinet d’amateur, also known as kunst- und wunderkammer. It is a collection of different paintings, usually belonging to a rich man or a notable, portrayed (once again) in a single picture celebrating the magnificence of this more or less real collection. As for the pictorial genre, so the short novel is the celebration of the images collected by George Perec in his previous masterpiece, La vie mode d’emploi. This is why I assume this work to be referable to the genre of structural homology more …
The activities and participation categories of the ICF Core Sets for multiple sclerosis from the patient perspective.
2013
Purpose: To validate the activities and participation components of The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 113 Finnish community-dwelling persons with MS were assessed using a semi-structured interview provided by the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM) to capture participants’ self-perceived problems in everyday activities and participation. Problems were linked to the ICF categories. Results: Participants identified 527 of the most important occupational performance problems. They covered all chapters of the ICF Activities and Participation components. Forty-one categories out of a total 53 ICF act…
