Direct nucleation of calcium oxalate dihydrate crystals onto the surface of living renal epithelial cells in culture

1998

Direct nucleation of calcium oxalate dihydrate crystals onto the surface of living renal epithelial cells in culture. Background. The interaction of the most common crystal in human urine, calcium oxalate dihydrate (COD), with the surface of monkey renal epithelial cells (BSC-1 line) was studied to identify initiating events in kidney stone formation. Methods. To determine if COD crystals could nucleate directly onto the apical cell surface, a novel technique utilizing vapor diffusion of oxalic acid was employed. Cells were grown to confluence in the inner four wells of 24-well plates. At the start of each experiment, diethyloxalate in water was placed into eight adjacent wells, and the pla…

Stoichiometry-related Auger lineshapes in titanium oxides: Influence of valence-band profile and of Coster-Kronig processes

2004

International audience; The ability to determine the nature and the occurrence of defects is a central need of ceramic surface chemistry. In titanium oxides, the Ti-LMV Auger decays line shape is very sensitive to the titanium degree of oxidation, and has long been empirically used as a qualitative probe of the stoichiometry. In the present work, resonant Auger and resonant valence-band measurements at the Ti-L2,3 edges in TiO2, TiO2–x and metallic titanium provide a clear evidence that the evolutions of the Ti-LMV Auger line shape are due to drastic changes in the valence-band profile and in the probability of L2L3V Coster-Kronig decay processes when a fraction of titanium ions is reduced.…

Parent of origin effects in attention/deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD): analysis of data from the international multicenter ADHD genetics (IMAGE…

2008

Contains fulltext : 71540.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Closed access) There are conflicting reports suggesting that the parental origin of transmitted risk alleles may play a role in the etiology of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). A recent report by Hawi and colleagues observed a generalized paternal over-transmission of alleles associated with ADHD. This was not replicated in more recent studies. Using data from a large multicenter study we examined the overall and gene-specific parent of origin effect in 554 independent SNPs across 47 genes. Transmission disequilibrium and explicit parent of origin test were performed using PLINK. Overall parent of origin effect was tested…

The kinetics of defect accumulation under irradiation: many-particle effects

1993

The kinetics of Frenkel defect accumulation under permanent particle source (irradiation) is discussed with special emphasis on many-particle effects. Defect accumulation is restricted by their diffusion and annihilation, A + B → 0, if the relative distance is less than the critical distance r0. A novel formalism of many-point particle densities based on Kirkwood's superposition approximation is developed to take into account aggregation of similar defects (A−A, B−B). The dependence of the saturation concentration after a prolonged irradiation upon spatial dimension ( = 1, 2, 3), defect mobility and the initial correlation within geminate pairs is analyzed. It is shown that the defect conce…

Luminescence and photo-thermally stimulated defect creation processes inPbWO4:Mo,La,Y (PWO III) crystals

2015

Photoluminescence, thermally stimulated luminescence and electron spin resonance are studied for a PbWO4 crystal grown by the Czochralski method at Bogoroditsk Technical Chemical Plant, Russia from the melt with a precise tuning of the stoichiometry and co-doped with La3+, Y3+, and Mo6+ ions. Photo-thermally stimulated processes of electron and hole centers creation under selective UV irradiation of the crystal in the 3.5–5.0 eV energy range and 85–205 K temperature range are clarified and the optically created electron and hole centers are identified. The electrons in this crystal are found to be mainly trapped at the (MoO4)2− groups as well as at the (WO4)2– groups located close to single…

Physical Activity Among Children With Congenital Heart Defects in Germany: A Nationwide Survey

2020

Objective: In children with congenital heart defects (CHD), a sedentary lifestyle should be avoided and usually WHO recommendations on physical activity (PA) are supposed to be followed. In order to obtain representative data of the actual amount of PA (and potential influencing factors) in children with CHD we performed a nationwide online survey. Methods: All patients aged 6–17 years registered in the German National Register for CHD were contacted by email and asked to participate in the survey using the comprehensive questionnaire of the “Motorik-Modul” from the German Health Interview and Examination Survey for Children and Adolescents (KiGGS), thus allowing the comparison with a repres…

CLEFT PALATE ONLY: CURRENT CONCEPTS

2017

Cleft palate only (CPO) is one of the most common congenital malformations worldwide. The etiopathogenesis of CPO is not completely understood. Environmental factors, such as smoking, alcohol consumption, intake of drugs during pregnancy, advanced paternal age, have been demonstrated to be a risk of CPO, but conflicting results have also been published. Insufficient intake of folic acid during the pregnancy has been suggested to increase the risk for CPO. The demonstrated risk for siblings and the higher risk for monozygotic twins suggest a genetic etiopathogenesis for CPO. In some cases of CPO a prevalent mode of inheritance has been reported, but oligogenic models with reduced penetrance,…

Induction of micronuclei in V79 Chinese hamster cells by tetrachlorohydroquinone, a metabolite of pentachlorophenol

1992

Tetrachlorohydroquinone, a metabolite of the fungicide pentachlorophenol, induced significant dose-related increases in micronuclei in V79 Chinese hamster cells without exogenous metabolic activation. The lowest observed effective dose was 10 microM, where the relative survival was about 62%. At the highest dose tested, 20 microM, the relative survival was about 8% and the frequency of cells with micronuclei was about 6 times the solvent control frequency. The induction of micronuclei by tetrachlorohydroquinone was significantly inhibited by the hydroxyl radical scavenger dimethyl sulfoxide at 5% (v/v).
