Differential occurrence of S100A7 in breast cancer tissues: A proteomic-based investigation

2012

Purpose The present study reports for the first time a large-scale proteomic screening of the occurrence, subcellular localization and relative quantification of the S100A7 protein among a group of 100 patients, clinically grouped for the diagnosis of infiltrating ductal carcinoma (IDC). Experimental design To this purpose, the methods of differential proteomics, Western blotting, and immunohistochemistry were used. Results The identity of two isoforms of the protein was assessed by mass spectrometry and immunologically confirmed. Moreover, we proved by immunocytochemical applications the exclusive localization of the protein within the neoplastic cells. The correlation of S100A7 expression…

Isolation of the silicatein-α interactor silintaphin-2 by a novel solid-phase pull-down assay.

2011

The skeleton of siliceous sponges consists of amorphous biogenous silica (biosilica). Biosilica formation is driven enzymatically by means of silicatein(s). During this unique process of enzymatic polycondensation, skeletal elements (spicules) that enfold a central proteinaceous structure (axial filament), mainly comprising silicatein, are formed. However, only the concerted action of silicatein and other proteins can explain the genetically controlled diversity of spicular morphotypes, from simple rods with pointed ends to intricate structures with up to six rays. With the scaffold protein silintaphin-1, a first silicatein interactor that facilitates the formation of the axial filament and…

A comparative study for the removal of methylene blue dye by N and S modified TiO2 adsorbents

2015

Successful removal of methylene blue (MB) dye from aqueous solutions using nitrogen and sulfur modified TiO2(P25) nanoparticles has been demonstrated in this study. The modified adsorbents were characterized using various analytical methods, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The adsorption potential of S-TiO2, N-TiO2 and TiO2(P25) type adsorbents was tested for the removal of MB dye. The kinetic studies indicated that the adsorption of MB dye followed the pseudo-first order model, while desorption processes followed the second order model. The adsorption capacity of the adsorbent proved to be increasing as a f…

Assessment of performance degradation of hybrid flax-glass fiber reinforced epoxy composites during a salt spray fog/dry aging cycle

2022

The main goal of this paper is the evaluation of the performances reversibility of hybrid composites when they are dried after being aged in salt-fog environment. To this aim, epoxy composites reinforced with flax and glass fabrics respectively in the internal and external laminae were at first exposed to salt-fog (i.e., identified as wet phase) and then stored in controlled conditions (i.e., identified as dry phase). The flexural properties evolution of these composites as well as their water uptake and contact angle were monitored at varying time of both phases. The flexural strength and modulus of hybrid composites is 23.4% (17.9%) and 15.5% (12.9%) lower than unaged ones after 30 (15) d…

Two-Dimensional Modeling of an Externally Irradiated Slurry Photoreactor

2013

Abstract A batch cylindrical photocatalytic reactor, externally irradiated by 1–6 UV fluorescent lamps and containing a stirred slurry of polycrystalline TiO2, was modeled by coupling a modified Langmuir–Hinshelwood kinetics together with a two-dimensional light intensity field. The radiation field has been determined on the main assumptions of diffuse radiation, isotropic scattering and negligible backward reflected photon flow. The model has been applied to the photocatalytic oxidation of organic substrates which do not undergo homogeneous photochemical degradation. The model is characterized by the following four parameters: the kinetic constants of substrate adsorption, desorption and d…

Retention of vanadium (V) by three Finnish mineral soils

1994

Summary Retention of V(V) by three Finnish mineral soils from 10−4m and 10−5m sodium vanadate solutions was investigated at room temperature in the pH range 2.3–7.5. In adsorption experiments, 0.02 m KCl was used as ionic medium, and the samples were left to equilibrate for 72 h. The solid: solution ration was 1:100 (m: v). Maximum adsorption occurred at pH ∼4, where 70–80% of the added V (350–400 μg g−1 from 10−4m solution and 35–40 μg g−1 from 10−5m solution) was retained by each soil. Retention was significant even at pH 6, where adsorption of a similar anion, molybdate, is negligible. Desorption of the retained V was measured by adding 50.0 cm3 of 0.02 M KCl into weighed soil samples an…

A statistical design of experiments for optimizing the MALDI-TOF-MS sample preparation of polymers. An application in the assessment of the thermo-me…

2011

[EN] The sample preparation procedure for MALDI-TOF MS of polymers is addressed in this study by the application of a statistical Design of Experiments (DoE). Industrial poly (ethylene terephthalate) (PET) was chosen as model polymer. Different experimental settings (levels) for matrixes, analyte/matrix proportions and concentrations of cationization agent were considered. The quality parameters used for the analysis were signal-to-noise ratio and resolution. A closer inspection of the statistical results provided the study not only with the best combination of factors for the MALDI sample preparation, but also with a better understanding of the influence of the different factors, individua…

2011

[EN] Multiple processing by means of successive injection cycles was used to simulate the thermo-mechanical degradation effects on the oligomeric distribution of PLA under mechanical recycling. Likewise, an accelerated thermal ageing over PLA glass transition was performed in order to simulate its service life. MALDI-TOF MS was used for the analysis and the sample preparation procedure was assessed by means of a statistical Design of Experiments (DoE). The quality effects in use for the analysis were signal-to-noise ratio and Resolution. Different matrixes, analyte/matrix proportions and the use of NaTFA as cationization agent were considered. Methods for the Identification of Tainting Terpenoids and other Compounds from Algae

1992

Off-flavour compounds produced by algae in freshwater ecosystems were studied for their structure using integrated sensory and spectroscopic methods: mass spectrometry (MS), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR). Both solvent extraction and thermal desorption were used to isolate and to introduce the compounds into gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and gas chromatography/Fourier transform infrared (GC/FTIR) systems. Ten ng of a terpenoid compound gave a readable IR spectrum. For 1H NMR studies the compounds were collected directly into NMR solvent by preparative gas chromatography. About 5 µg of a monoterpenoid compound was needed for a reliable 1…

Low temperature headspace desorption of volatile organic compounds trapped in air sampling solid-supports

2009

Environmental context. The monitoring of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in air is of great importance for air quality on both local and global scales. The determination of VOCs can be carried out by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) after active or passive sampling and (high temperature) thermal desorption. An attractive alternative would be to combine GC-MS with headspace (HS) systems as it allows simpler, faster, low temperature desorption. We present here the first report of HS-GC-MS for the determination of VOCs in air sampled using solid supports. Abstract. The use of a headspace (HS) for low temperature desorption of VOCs, previously sorbed from indoor air on solid supp…
