JEM-X: three years in space

We report on the technical and scientific performance of JEM-X, the X-ray monitor on ESA's INTEGRAL mission. INTEGRAL has now been in orbit for more than three years, and the mission is foreseen to be extended until the end of 2010. Overall, JEM-X performs very well, and can be expected to continue to do so for the duration of the mission. We discuss in some detail the operational experiences and the problems encountered with the microstrip detectors caused by the space environment and give one example of the interesting scientific results obtained. The analysis software is still being improved on, and we discuss briefly the significance of these improvements.

Measurements with a hybrid detector prototype composed of a MOS CCD and a CZT spectrometer

The scientific objectives of the future X-ray astronomy instruments require new type of focusing telescopes able to extend the observational range starting from 0.1 keV at least up to 100 keV to solve crucial question concerning the nature of the high energy emission. A challenging technology to extend the classical grazing incidence range to higher energy is today offered by the development of multilayer optics that are effective as X-ray concentrators between few keV up to 100 keV. AbstractThe Ultra-Fast Flash Observatory (UFFO) is a space mission to detect the early moments of an explosion from Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), thus enhancing our understanding of the GRB mechanism. It consists of the UFFO Burst & Trigger telescope (UBAT) for the recognition of GRB positions using hard X-ray from GRBs. It also contains the Slewing Mirror Telescope (SMT) for the fast detection of UV-optical photons from GRBs. Wavelength-multiplexed computational temporal ghost imaging

Ghost imaging is a novel imaging technique based on correlation measurements between a structured illumination pattern (the reference) and the total intensity transmitted or reflected by an object [1]. The reference illumination patterns may be either randomly generated by a spatially incoherent light source, or pre-programmed e.g. with a spatial light modulator. Light transmitted (or reflected) by the object is measured by a single-pixel “bucket” detector with null spatial resolution. Composition of Primary Cosmic-Ray Nuclei at High Energies

The TRACER instrument (``Transition Radiation Array for Cosmic Energetic Radiation'') has been developed for direct measurements of the heavier primary cosmic-ray nuclei at high energies. The instrument had a successful long-duration balloon flight in Antarctica in 2003. The detector system and measurement process are described, details of the data analysis are discussed, and the individual energy spectra of the elements O, Ne, Mg, Si, S, Ar, Ca, and Fe (nuclear charge Z=8 to 26) are presented. Spectrum and charge ratio of vertical cosmic ray muons up to momenta of 2.5 TeV/c

The ALEPH detector at LEP has been used to measure the momentum spectrum and charge ratio of vertical cosmic ray muons underground. The sea-level cosmic ray muon spectrum for momenta up to 2.5 TeV/c has been obtained by correcting for the overburden of 320 meter water equivalent (mwe). The results are compared with Monte Carlo models for air shower development in the atmosphere. From the analysis of the spectrum the total flux and the spectral index of the cosmic ray primaries is inferred. The charge ratio suggests a dominantly light composition of cosmic ray primaries with energies up to 10^15 eV.

Recoil-isomer tagging techniques at RITU

Techniques have been developed to study isomeric states in nuclei with the use of RITU (gas filled separator) at the University of Jyvaskyla. The first was the recoil-isomer tagging technique initially, utilised by D.M. Cullen to study the K π = 8− isomeric state in 138Gd [1]. The juro-sphere array was employed in conjunction with ritu and a focal plane array which consisted of several Compton-suppressed Germanium detectors, placed in close geometry around a multi wire proportional counter (mwpc) and a silicon strip detector used for the implantation of recoiling nuclei. Compton imaging with AGATA and SmartPET for DESPEC

DESPEC (DEcay SPECtroscopy) is a spectrometer, currently under construction, which is to be used at the FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) facility at GSI Darmstadt, Germany, as part of the NuSTAR (Nuclear STructure, Astrophysics and Reactions) project. Its goal is to analyse the decay of exotic nuclei produced via the Super-FRS (SUPERconducting FRagment Separator). The optimal configuration of certain elements of the spectrometer, namely a HPGe (High Purity Germanium) tracking array, is still under consideration. Endcap Disc DIRC for PANDA at FAIR

The Endcap Disc DIRC (EDD) has been developed to provide an excellent particle identification in the future PANDA experiment by separating pions and kaons up to a momentum of 4 GeV/c with a separation power of 3 s.d.. The detector is placed in the forward endcap of the PANDA target spectrometer. It consists of a fused silica plate and focusing elements placed at the outer rim, which focus the Cherenkov light on the photo cathodes of the attached MCP-PMTs. A compact and fast readout of the signals is realized with special ASICs. The performance has been studied and validated with different prototype setups in various testbeam facilities.
