Exercise intervention in childhood obesity : a randomized controlled trial comparing hospital-versus home-based groups

2012

The aim of this study was to compare the effect of a hospital clinic group- versus home-based combined exercise-diet program for the treatment of childhood obesity. One hundred ten overweight/obese Spanish children and adolescents (6-16 years) in 2 intervention groups (hospital clinic group-based [n = 45] and home-based [n = 41]) and a sex-age-matched control group (n = 24) were randomly assigned to participate in a 6-month combined exercise (aerobic and resistance training) and Mediterranean diet program. Anthropometric values (including body weight, height, body mass index, BMI-Z score, and waist circumference) were measured pre- and postintervention for all the participants. Percentage bo…

Phenolic and microbial-targeted metabolomics to discovering and evaluating wine intake biomarkers in human urine and plasma

2014

The discovery of biomarkers of intake in nutritional epidemiological studies is essential in establishing an association between dietary intake (considering their bioavailability) and diet-related risk factors for diseases. The aim is to study urine and plasma phenolic and microbial profile by targeted metabolomics approach in a wine intervention clinical trial for discovering and evaluating food intake biomarkers. High-risk male volunteers (n = 36) were included in a randomized, crossover intervention clinical trial. After a washout period, subjects received red wine or gin, or dealcoholized red wine over four weeks. Fasting plasma and 24-h urine were collected at baseline and after each i…

A49 LACTOBACILLI DEGRADE WHEAT AMYLASE TRYPSIN INHIBITORS (ATI) TO AMELIORATE GUT DYSFUNCTION INDUCED BY IMMUNOGENIC WHEAT PROTEINS

2019

BACKGROUND: Wheat-related disorders involve a wide spectrum of conditions, triggered by the ingestion of gluten-containing cereals. The induction of gluten-specific immune responses in celiac disease is well established. However, the contribution of gluten and/or non-gluten proteins in the generation of symptoms in other wheat-related disorders is controversial. Amylase trypsin inhibitors (ATIs) are pest-resistant molecules in modern wheat with TLR4-activating capacities. AIMS: We investigated the role of ATIs in the generation of gut barrier dysfunction and dysmotility in wild-type mice as well as in the severity of gluten-induced immunopathology in genetically predisposed mice. We also de…

Dietary arachidonic acid and hepatic desaturation of fatty acids in obese zucker rats

1998

The effect of low levels of dietary arachidonic acid (20:4n-6) on Δ6 desaturation of linoleic acid (18:2n-6) and α-linolenic acid (18:3n-3), and on Δ5 desaturation of dihomo-γ-linolenic acid (20:3n-6) were studied in liver microsomes of obese Zucker rats, in comparison with their lean littermates. Fatty acid composition of serum total lipids and of phospholipids from liver microsomes and from total heart and kidney was determined to see whether modifications of desaturation rate, if any, were reflected in the tissue fatty acid profiles. Animals fed for 12 wk on a balanced diet, containing 20:4n-6 and 18:2n-6, were compared to those fed 18:2n-6 only. The low amount of dietary 20:4n-6 greatly…

Evidence of the Gluten-Free and Casein-Free Diet in Autism Spectrum Disorders

2014

In autism spectrum disorders, many parents resort to alternative treatments and these are generally perceived as risk free. Among these, the most commonly used is the gluten-free, casein-free diet. The objective of this work was to conduct a systematic review of studies published from 1970 to date related to the gluten-free, casein-free diet in autism spectrum disorder patients. Few studies can be regarded as providing sound scientific evidence since they were blinded randomized controlled trials, and even these were based on small sample sizes, reducing their validity. We observed that the evidence on this topic is currently limited and weak. We recommend that it should be only used after…

Rola diety i metod leczenia żywieniowego w ograniczeniu dolegliwości zespołu jelita drażliwego

2021

The symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome are estimated in 10–20% of the population, and the disease is currently one of the most common diseases of the digestive system. Thus, it is a significant diagnostic problem for doctors and nutritionists in terms of the selection the appropriate diet therapy and for pharmacists in terms of potential pharmaceutical care and consultation on basic nutritional errors. Research shows that the prevalence of IBS contributes to a significant deterioration in the quality of life, and the type of food consumed has a significant impact on the well-being and health of the patient. The prevalence of symptoms is strongly related to the food consumed. About 60% of …

Role of FODMAPs in Patients With Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

2015

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a condition characterized by abdominal pain, bloating, flatus, and altered bowel habits. The role of dietary components in inducing IBS symptoms is difficult to explore. To date, foods are not considered a cause but rather symptom-triggering factors. Particular interest has been given to the so-called FODMAPs (fermentable oligo-, di-, and monosaccharides and polyols). We aimed to summarize the evidence from the most common approaches to manage suspected food intolerance in IBS, with a particular interest in the role of FODMAPs and the effects of a low FODMAP diet. We reviewed literature, consulting PubMed and Medline by using the search terms FODMAP(s), fru…
