<title>Clinical potential of the side-glowing optical fibers</title>

1997

Unconventional designs of silica-core optical fibers providing efficient lateral emission through the cylindrical side surface have been developed and manufactured. A physical model of the side-glowing fibers, available experimental data and potential clinical applications of this type of lightguides are discussed. Promising, clinical applications can be expected in the following areas: (1) Phototherapy, including photo-dynamic therapy, soft-laser therapy and visible/UV broadband irradiation therapy. (2) Single-fiber laser Doppler flowmetry. (3) Laser-tissue dosimetry. (4) Linear and planar 'cold light' illumination. (5) Optical sensing of mechanical pressure.

Acoustic and optical variations during rapid downward motion episodes in the deep north-western Mediterranean Sea

2011

An Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) was moored at the deep-sea site of the ANTARES neutrino telescope near Toulon, France, thus providing a unique opportunity to compare high-resolution acoustic and optical observations between 70 and 170 m above the sea bed at 2475 m. The ADCP measured downward vertical currents of magnitudes up to 0.03 m s-1 in late winter and early spring 2006. In the same period, observations were made of enhanced levels of acoustic reflection, interpreted as suspended particles including zooplankton, by a factor of about 10 and of horizontal currents reaching 0.35 m s-1. These observations coincided with high light levels detected by the telescope, interpreted …

Analysis of the level-crossing rate and average duration of fades of WSSUS channels

2017

Studies of the level-crossing rate (LCR) and the average duration of fades (ADF) are so far only devoted to stochastic processes being a function of one independent variable, which is usually time or in some few cases frequency. In this paper, we study the LCR (ADF) of wide-sense stationary uncorrelated scattering (WSSUS) processes in the time-frequency domain. A closed-form solution will be derived for the so-called time-frequency LCR (ADF) of the absolute value of the time-variant transfer function (TVTF) of WSSUS processes. It is shown that the LCR (ADF) is circularly symmetric in the normalized time-frequency domain. The derived time-frequency LCR contains the time LCR and frequency LCR…

Farbcodierte Dopplersonographie (FD-Sonographie) primärer und sekundärer Lebertumoren

2008

50 Patients with 78 focal liver lesions were examined via colour-coded Doppler system to study the vascularity of metastatic lesions and primary benign and malignant liver tumours. According to the amount of detectable colour Doppler signals, tumour vascularity was graded into 4 types. Metastases (n = 40) and cavernous haemangiomas (n = 12) seemed to be avascular with no evidence of increased vascularity (Type I/II). Conversely primary liver cancer (PLCA) (n = 7) and focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH) (n = 16) mainly produced arterial Doppler signals within the tumour (Type III/IV). AV shunts and partial portal vein thrombosis could be demonstrated in PLCA. Doppler colour flow imaging for dete…

Discovery of 105 Hz coherent pulsations in the ultracompact binary IGR J16597-3704

2018

We report the discovery of X-ray pulsations at 105.2 Hz (9.5 ms) from the transient X-ray binary IGR J16597-3704 using NuSTAR and Swift. The source was discovered by INTEGRAL in the globular cluster NGC 6256 at a distance of 9.1 kpc. The X-ray pulsations show a clear Doppler modulation implying an orbital period of ~46 minutes and a projected semi-major axis of ~5 lt-ms, which makes IGR J16597-3704 an ultra-compact X-ray binary system. We estimated a minimum companion mass of 0.0065 solar masses, assuming a neutron star mass of 1.4 solar masses, and an inclination angle of <75 degrees (suggested by the absence of eclipses or dips in its light-curve). The broad-band energy spectrum of the…

Intraluminal Doppler-sonography: a new device for data analysis and its in vitro test

2002

Summary form only given. A special data acquisition unit has been developed which allows to process on-line not only the mean-phasic Doppler shift signal but also to analyze the spectral contents and the received A-mode signal. The probe consists of a 3f-catheter which is activated by a pulsed transmitter-receiver (Millar). The carrier frequency is 20 MHz and the impulse repetition rate is 62.5 kHz. Two modular A/D converters are used. One digitizes directly the Doppler shift frequencies in the range less than 20 kHz (sampling rate 100 kHz, resolution 12 bit); the other digitizes the RF-signal (sampling rate 200 MHz, resolution 8 bit). For further processing, data are transferred via separa…

Polarization shaping for unidirectional rotational motion of molecules.

2015

Control of the orientation of the angular momentum of linear molecules is demonstrated by means of laser polarization shaping. For this purpose, we combine two orthogonally polarized and partially time-overlapped femtosecond laser pulses so as to produce a spinning linear polarization which in turn induces unidirectional rotation of N2 molecules. The evolution of the rotational response is probed by a third laser beam that can be either linearly or circularly polarized. The physical observable is the frequency shift imparted to the probe beam as a manifestation of the angular Doppler effect. Our experimental results are confirmed by theoretical computations, which allow one to gain a deep p…

XMM-Newton detects a relativistically broadened iron line in the spectrum of the ms X-ray pulsar SAX J1808.4-3658

2008

We report on a 63-ks long XMM-Newton observation of the accreting millisecond pulsar SAX J1808.4-3658 during the latest X-ray outburst which started on September 21st 2008. The pn spectrum shows a highly significant emission line in the energy band where the iron K-alpha line is expected, and which we identify as emission from neutral (or mildly ionized) iron. The line profile appears to be quite broad (more than 1 keV FWHM) and asymmetric; the most probable explanation for this profile is Doppler and relativistic broadening from the inner accretion disc. From a fit with a diskline profile we find an inner radius of the disc of 8.7^(+3.7)_(-2.7) R_g, corresponding to 18.0^(+7.6)_(-5.6) km f…

A new approach to determination of the asymmetry parameter of Stark-broadened isolated spectral lines

2013

A new approach to evaluation of asymmetry parameters of Stark-broadened isolated spectral lines is presented. The procedure is discussed on the example of the N I line at λ = 9822.75 A. Line shape measurements were performed using a wall-stabilized arc, operated at atmospheric pressure. The radiation of the plasma, emitted from homogeneous plasma layers in end-on direction, was measured using a grating spectrometer equipped with a two-dimensional CCD detector. Griem-like profiles, convoluted with the corresponding Doppler and apparatus profiles, were fitted to experimental data. In this way the Stark broadening parameters (electron impact widths, shifts and asymmetry) have been determined. …

Relaxation mechanisms affecting magneto-optical resonances in an extremely thin cell: Experiment and theory for the cesiumD1line

2015

We have measured magneto-optical signals obtained by exciting the $D_1$ line of cesium atoms confined to an extremely thin cell (ETC), whose walls are separated by less than one micrometer, and developed an improved theoretical model to describe these signals with experimental precision. The theoretical model was based on the optical Bloch equations and included all neighboring hyperfine transitions, the mixing of the magnetic sublevels in an external magnetic field, and the Doppler effect, as in previous studies. However, in order to model the extreme conditions in the ETC more realistically, the model was extended to include a unified treatment of transit relaxation and wall collisions wi…
