Localising Supranational Concepts of Literacy in Adult Second Language Teaching

2012

In this chapter we are analyzing how literacy is conceptualized within education – more specifically within adult second language education in Denmark and Finland. Language and literacy are generally described as highly important for societal growth, coherence and democracy in statements from governments and international agencies. However, in our research literacy appears as a more complex and contradictory resource that is increasingly used as a demarcation line for inclusion and exclusion in the ever more globalised national states. peerReviewed

A comparative study of Finnish graduating seniors’motivation to learn English and Swedish

2009

Rituals, myth and art for English language class : cultural meanings in foreign language teaching : interpretive anthropological and sociocultural pe…

2013

Kielipedagogiikan muuttuessa oppimiskeskeisemmäksi on vuorovaikutuksen merkitys vieraitten kielten ja niihin olennaisesti liittyvien ‘vieraitten kulttuureiden’ opetuksessa korostunut. ‘Kulttuurin’ opetuksessa on kuitenkin yleensä keskitytty tarjoamaan taustatietoa ‘kohdekulttuurimaista’, kun taas vuorovaikutus on metodologisessa mielessä usein ymmärretty melko kapea-alaisesti puheen tuottamisena tai ryhmätöinä. Tähän tutkielmaan liittyvä materiaalipaketti perustuu laajempaan semioottiseen viitekehykseen, jossa korostuu vuorovaikutuksen luonne merkitysten luomisena, jolloin se on ennen kaikkea monimuotoista symbolista toimintaa. Pro gradu -tutkielmassa tarkastellaan, kuinka kulttuurisia merk…

Interrelating agency, autonomy and identity in foreign language learning

2014

Foreign language (FL) learning is increasingly examined in terms of the language learning person’s agency, autonomy and identity. What agency refers to in FL learning and how it relates to autonomy and identity nevertheless remains unclear. As theoretical discussions about the interconnections are ambiguous, more empirical evidence is needed. The present article addresses this need, contributing to a fuller understanding of the three notions in FL education. The article explores one student’s FL learning in a general upper secondary school for adults (GUSSA), analysing her language narratives, which refer to her storied, FL related experiences. The findings suggest that agency can be concep…

Striving to learn versus "I know all I need": the perceived foreign language skill development of first-year university history students

2016

Kielitaidon kehittymistä on tutkittu paljon, mutta korkeakouluissa tapahtuvaa kielellisestä kehitystä ei niinkään, varsinkaan Suomessa. Opiskelijat ovat muutaman pakollisen kielikurssin jälkeen oman motivaationsa varassa, jaksavatko he pitää yllä kielitaitoaan. Tutkimukseni tarkoituksena on tuoda esille, kuinka ensimmäisen vuoden historian opiskelijat näkevät oman kielitaitonsa ja sen kehittymisen joko parempaan tai huonompaan suuntaan vieraiden kielten kanssa heidän omasta mielestään. Tutkimusmateriaali kerättiin kyselylomakkeella, joka jaettiin opiskelijoille heidän ensimmäisen vuotensa maaliskuussa. Kyselylomake oli jaettu kolmeen osaan. Ensimmäinen osa keskittyi heidän kielitaitonsa syn…

ESTIMATION OF OCEANIC PARTICULATE ORGANIC CARBON WITH MACHINE LEARNING

2020

Understanding and quantifying ocean carbon sinks of the planet is of paramount relevance in the current scenario of global change. Particulate organic carbon (POC) is a key biogeochemical parameter that helps us characterize export processes of the ocean. Ocean color observations enable the estimation of bio-optical proxies of POC (i.e. particulate backscattering coefficient, bbp) in the surface layer of the ocean quasi-synoptically. In parallel, the Argo program distributes vertical profiles of the physical properties with a global coverage and a high spatio-temporal resolution. Merging satellite ocean color and Argo data using a neural networkbased method has already shown strong potentia…

Effects of Service Learning on Physical Education Teacher Education Students’ Subjective Happiness, Prosocial Behavior, and Professional Learning

2020

Purpose: This study aims to analyze the effects of a service learning (SL) program on the subjective happiness (SH), prosocial behavior (PB), and professional learning (PL) perceptions of Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) students as well as to examine the correlations among these variables. Methods: The study used a quasi-experimental design of two non-equivalent groups (control and experimental) comparing pre-test and post-test data. The instruments used were the Subjective Happiness Scale, the Prosocial and Civic Competence questionnaire, and the Impact of Service Learning during Initial Training of Physical Activity and Sports questionnaire. Results: Data indicated that SL onl…

Prediction of Specific TCR-Peptide Binding From Large Dictionaries of TCR-Peptide Pairs

2019

Abstract The T cell repertoire is composed of T cell receptors (TCR) selected by their cognate MHC-peptides and naive TCR that do not bind known peptides. While the task of distinguishing a peptide-binding TCR from a naive TCR unlikely to bind any peptide can be performed using sequence motifs, distinguishing between TCRs binding different peptides requires more advanced methods. Such a prediction is the key for using TCR repertoires as disease-specific biomarkers. We here used large scale TCR-peptide dictionaries with state-of-the-art natural language processing (NLP) methods to produce ERGO (pEptide tcR matchinG predictiOn), a highly specific classifier to predict which TCR binds to which…

Quantitative Prediction of the Landscape of T Cell Epitope Immunogenicity in Sequence Space

2019

Immunodominant T cell epitopes preferentially targeted in multiple individuals are the critical element of successful vaccines and targeted immunotherapies. However, the underlying principles of this "convergence" of adaptive immunity among different individuals remain poorly understood. To quantitatively describe epitope immunogenicity, here we propose a supervised machine learning framework generating probabilistic estimates of immunogenicity, termed "immunogenicity scores," based on the numerical features computed through sequence-based simulation approximating the molecular scanning process of peptides presented onto major histocompatibility complex (MHC) by the human T cell receptor (T…

Primetime learning: collaborative and technology-enhanced studying with genuine teacher presence.

2017

Background Productive learning processes and good learning outcomes can be attained by applying the basic elements of active learning. The basic elements include fostering discussions and disputations, facing alternative conceptions, and focusing on conceptual understanding. However, in the face of poor course retention and high dropout rates, even learning outcomes can become of secondary importance. To address these challenges, we developed a research-based instructional strategy, the primetime learning model. We devised the model by organizing the basic elements of active learning into a theory-based four-step study process. The model is based on collaborative and technology-enhanced lea…
