Burkitt's lymphoma : a child s case presenting in the maxilla. Clinical and radiological aspects.

2006

Burkitt´s lymphoma (BL) is a neoplasm which, despite its very aggressive behaviour is potentially curable. It typically affects the paediatric population. BL belongs to the non-Hodgkin lymphomas group, and is the first human tumour undoubtedly related to a viral origin (Epstein-Barr virus). Two main clinical subtypes are recognized: endemic or African type, and sporadic type; HIV associated BL constitutes a third type. Although common in endemic BL, maxillary involvement is rare in sporadic cases. This, together with the clinical lack of specificity associated to this location, makes diagnosis difficult. New chemotherapeutic protocols achieve a high survival rate. Most important prognostic …

Kabuki make-up (Niikawa-Kuroki) syndrome: Clinical and radiological observations in two sicilian children

1991

The Authors describe two patients aged 5 and 8, a female and a male, affected by a condition of polymalformations known as Kabuki make-up or Niikawa-Kuroki syndrome, having a neonatal incidence of 1:32,000 in Japan. There are two hypothesis about the apparent rarity of the syndrome in the rest of the world, including the Asian Continent: the first is that it exists, but is infrequently recognized outside Japan and the second is that it is really more frequent in those parts of the world, where ethnic exchanges are uncommon, as it happens in Japan.

Bifid mandibular condyles: A systematic review.

2018

Background Bifid mandibular condyle (BMC) constitutes an extremely rare disorder characterized by a duplication of the head of the mandibular condyle. Its prevalence ranges from 0.31% to 1.82% in the published literature. Objectives The primary objective was to describe the main etiological, clinical and radiological characteristics of patients with BMCs and the existent treatment options. The secondary objective was to simultaneously include the characteristics of two new cases of BMC. Material and Methods An electronic search in Pubmed (MEDLINE), Scopus and The Cochrane Library was carried out by two independent reviewers until April 2018. Prospective or retrospective cohort studies, case…

Oral health-related quality of life and clinical outcomes of immediately or delayed loaded implants in the rehabilitation of edentulous jaws: A retro…

2018

Background Patient-centered outcomes are being given great attention by the dental scientific community. The Oral Health Impact Profile -14 questionnaire (OHIP-14) has been introduced to address patients' success criteria when describing the impact of oral rehabilitations on quality of life (OHrQoL). Methods Thirty-five patients wearing a full-arch implant-prosthesis being in place between 4 and 6 years before this analysis were considered eligible and then enrolled in the present retrospective study. According to their prosthetic anamnesis, two groups were defined: delayed loading group (IL-group) and immediate loading group (IL-group). At the moment of analysis, clinical and radiographic …

Script-based Reappraisal Test - Introducing a new paradigm to investigate the effect of reappraisal inventiveness on reappraisal effectiveness

2022

The ability to regulate emotions is essential for psychological well-being. Therefore, it is particularly important to investigate the specific dynamics of emotion regulation. In a new approach, we developed a novel paradigm – the Script-based Reappraisal Test (SRT) – to measure the processes involved in reappraisal, especially reappraisal inventiveness, i.e. the ability to create multiple and differing reappraisals. The aim of this study was twofold: (1) experimentally validate the SRT and (2) investigate whether reappraisal inventiveness increases reappraisal effectiveness. Healthy students (N = 143) completed the SRT. In this task, we presented everyday emotional situations in textual fo…

Spectrum of collateral findings in multislice CT coronary angiography.

2007

Purpose. The aim of the study was to investigate the prevalence of the noncardiac collateral findings during multislice computed tomography coronary angiography (MSCT-CA). Materials and methods. Six hundred and seventy patients undergoing MSCT-CA with 16-slice and 64-slice CT scanners for suspected atherosclerotic disease of the coronary arteries were retrospectively reviewed. All data sets obtained with a large field of view (FOV) were analysed by two radiologists using standard mediastinal and lung window settings. Collateral findings were divided according to clinical importance into nonsignificant, remarkable and compulsory to be investigated. Results. Eighty-five percent of patients re…

Simultaneous and delayed direct sinus lift versus conventional implants : retrospective study with 5-years minimum follow-up

2018

Background To compare the radiological parameters and success of posterior maxillary direct sinus lift with simultaneous or delayed implant placement, or implant placement in native bone, after a minimum follow-up period of 5 years. Material and Methods A retrospective cohort study was carried out in a university clinic, selecting patients subjected to implant treatment in the posterior maxilla between the years 2005 and 2011. The patients were divided into three groups: 1) implants placed in native bone; 2) direct sinus lift with simultaneous implant placement; and 3) direct sinus lift with delayed implant placement. Bone crest level, bone loss, vertical bone gain, and implant success and …

Treatment of acute mastoiditis in children with cochlear implants

2009

Abstract Introduction Acute mastoiditis (AM) is a paediatric infectious complication that raises a specific problem in case of implanted patients. Objective To review the cases of AM in a paediatric cochlear implant (CI) programme to study its incidence and associated problems. Materials and methods A retrospective study was conducted on 248 children aged between 8 months and 14 years who underwent CI from 1994 to 2009. The demographics, clinical data and their treatment were analyzed. Results Five patients developed acute mastoiditis (2.01%), three of them with subperiosteal abscess (1.21%). The mean age of implantation was 2 years and 4 months, and the complication presented between 1 and…

Mandibular osteoma as a cause of ankylosis and progressive trismus.

2021

Osteomas are benign tumours of bone tissue restricted to the craniofacial skeleton. The aim of this article is to present and discuss the demographic and clinical aspects and the management of craniomaxillofacial osteomas. When the patient was submitted from primary care to our hospital, he was 68 years old, and he had ankylosis of the temporomandibular joint for the previos 4 years. A CT scan was performed, finding a giant mandibular osteoma. Conservative treatment and radiological follow-up were carried out with clinical stability. Osteomas more often are seen in the paranasal sinuses and in young adults, with no differences in gender. Most are asymptomatic, but they can cause local probl…
