Driving Through Neoliberalism : Finnish Truck Drivers Constructing Respectable Male Worker Subjectivities

2017

This chapter analyses how Finnish male truck drivers (re)produce themselves as respectable male workers in the face of the recent economic, technological and institutional transformations impacting the European haulage sector. The investigation is based on ethnographic data which are produced by riding along on assignments with ten male Finnish truck drivers in the period 2012–2016. The analysis shows how truck drivers’ independence and value in the work process has become challenged and how truckers experience being occupationally stigmatized. The study argues, however, that while economic restructuring undermines some components of traditional forms of working-class masculinity, masculine…

Researchers' Age, Gender and Professional Status as Indicators of the Twitter Perception in Science Dissemination

2019

The social dimension of students in France, national and local perspectives

2015

International audience; The quantitative democratisation of the access to higher education in France has led to a more diversified student population particularly within universities both in terms of academic profile and social background. The different tracks (i.e. academic and vocational) within upper secondary school prepare differently students for higher education, and can lead to different study conditions and experiences within higher education. Indeed, the students from the vocational tracks are less well prepared to adapt to the difficulties of student life. In our presentation we will focus on first : year students and the different dimensions of their student life (academic, soci…

Housing Affordability for Urban Regions

2021

Urban regions are recognised as driving forces of the global economy as well as the main sources of social inequality. In recent decades, particularly, housing access has become a serious problem, not only for the most disadvantaged population, but also for the middle class, as a result of economic crises and despite of prices decline in the housing market. In urban regions with high population density, some social groups face problems of housing affordability that depend not only on market prices but also on income availability. The contribution proposes a methodology for income-threshold assessment through a combination between the ratio income and the residual income approaches, which is…

A linear matrix inequality approach to robust fault detection filter design of linear systems with mixed time-varying delays and nonlinear perturbati…

2010

Accepted version of an article in the journal: Journal of the Franklin Institute-Engineering and Applied Mathematics. The definitive version can be found on Sciverse: http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.jfranklin.2010.03.004 In this paper, the problem of robust fault detection filter (RFDF) design for a class of linear systems with some nonlinear perturbations and mixed neutral and discrete time-varying delays is investigated. By using a descriptor technique, Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional and a suitable change of variables, new required sufficient conditions are established in terms of delay-dependent linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) to synthesize the residual generation scheme. Based on the Luen…

Veselības aprūpes pieejamība Latvijā

2018

Darbs sastāv no trīs nodaļām.

The Role of Big Data in Addressing Societal Challenges: A Systematic Mapping Study

2019

Part 2: Big Data Analytics; International audience; Big data has recently become the focus of academic and corporate investigation due to its high potential in generating business and social value. We have done a systematic mapping of the literature related to big data and its applications leading to social change through the lens of social innovation. The search strategy initially resulted in 593 papers, and after applying inclusion exclusion criteria a total of 156 papers were mapped; 59% of which were identified as empirical studies. This mapping investigated the publication frequency of the studies, research approach and contributions, research areas and article distribution per journal…

Old-age protection for women in the Spanish pension system

2013

The example of Spain confirms the common view that contributory pension systems reproduce inequalities between the sexes that result from the nature of labour market structures and the sharing of family responsibilities. In general, women who stay at home are not entitled to their own pensions and are dependent on benefits of lower value such as survivors' pensions (derived entitlements) or non-contributory pensions. In turn, women who work outside the home accrue lower entitlements than men and, consequently, lower old-age or disability pensions (personal entitlements). The purpose of this article is to examine the figures for pension distribution by sex in Spain, review some of the pensio…

Individual control in decision-making and attitudes towards inequality: The case of Italy

2008

Power is commonly defined as the control exercised by one or more persons over the choices, behaviours and attitudes of another or others. In this paper we focus on a different form of control, i.e., the control that a person exercises on her own choices, behaviours and attitudes. We conceptualize this different form of control by using the Millian idea of autonomy freedom. We argue that the power required for an individual to be in control of her own actions is exercised through her level of autonomy freedom. Autonomy freedom is, therefore, instrumental for an individual to have self-control over her own life. We claim that the extent of autonomy freedom significantly affects an individual…
