Standard flavors of density-functional theory (DFT) calculations are known to fail in describing anions, due to large self-interaction errors. The problem may be circumvented using localized basis sets of reduced size, leaving no variational flexibility for the extra electron to delocalize. Alternatively, a recent approach exploiting DFT evaluations of total energies on electronic densities optimized at the Hartree-Fock (HF) level has been reported, showing that the self-interaction-free HF densities are able to lead to an improved description of the additional electron, returning affinities in close agreement with the experiments. L’ernia diaframmatica congenita (EDC) è una malformazione caratterizzata da un difetto di formazione del diaframma che rimane incompleto, determinando un diverso grado di risalita degli organi addominali nel torace durante la vita fetale. La sopravvivenza è condizionata principalmente dalla compromissione del parenchima polmonare che causa un mancato sviluppo alveolare e vascolare con conseguenti ipoplasia e ipertensione polmonare. L’aumentata sopravvivenza alla nascita dei neonati con EDC ha comportato un parallelo aumento della morbilità respiratoria a lungo termine. The amide bond represents one of the most fundamental functional groups in chemistry. The properties of amides are defined by amidic resonance (nN→π*C=O conjugation), which enforces planarity of the six atoms comprising the amide bond.
