Impact of repeating somatic cues on the depth of experiencing for withdrawers and pursuers in emotionally focused couple therapy

2021

Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy, an experiential modality, views emotion central to therapeutic change. In this exploratory study, we examined therapists' repetition of somatically focused interventions (therapist verbalizing somatic cues, such as facial expressions) and their impact on clients' emotional experiencing in-session. We also assessed difference for withdrawing versus pursuing partners. The sample included 13 EFT therapists who worked with one couple each for a single session. From transcripts we coded therapists' repetition of somatically focused interventions and clients' depth of experiencing pre-and post-intervention. Multilevel modeling demonstrated that a higher number …

Considering Learners’ Perceptions in Designing Effective 21st Century Learning Environments for Basic Education in Finland

2014

Focusing on so called Key Competences or 21st Century Skills urges educational organizations to redesign their psychosocial and physical learning environments. Inspired by studies indicating that considering learners’ perceptions of learning environments can have a positive impact on learning and wellbeing, our study aims at developing design principles for involving learners in the learning environment design. This pilot case study analyzed 7- to 14-years old Finns’ (n = 80) perceptions by using web questionnaires and design workshops. The results are in line with research indicating that Finnish learners value aspects such as safety and peacefulness, the possibilities for rest and physica…

Understanding flow experience from users’ requirements

2015

This paper argues that the concept of flow can be useful in gaining a better understanding of information system users’ flow experience. This paper applies this concept in the requirements development phase of an Internet protocol television e-learning service development project. Some features are driven by more experiential needs, whereas others are driven by more task-oriented goals. The findings indicate that the users’ perceived flow experiences can already be measured during the early phases of information systems IS development projec…

Collaborative innovation: the decade that radically changed drilling performance

2012

This article sheds light on key factors associated with innovations that are mainly based on experiential learning. The history of a company engaged in the offshore oil and gas industry exemplifies the points: Hitec started out as a small company with limited financial resources, but over a 10-year period, its innovations and improvements radically transformed offshore oil and gas drilling operations. An evolutionary methodological approach is balanced by theoretically informed analysis. A main finding is that customer–supplier interaction was crucial. Hitec's success, crowned by its eventual acquisition by American capital, can be attributed in part to the know-how and technology provided …

Group-Analysis and Education in Psychological Academic Training

2012

The aim of the paper is to present an integrated model of training groups (from median to large group) which can afford an useful instrument in psychologist’s academic education, decreasing the distance between theory and practice inside the university programs. Qualitative research methods like textual analysis can demonstrate the validity and efficacy of a group-oriented professional education. Using T-LAB, researchers can find if the group-analytic way to think psychologist’s academic education demonstrates efficacy and is coherent with the theoret…

TO BE PSYCHOLOGISTS OR TO BECOME A PSYCHOLOGIST? A STUDY ON UTILITY AND EFFECTIVENESS OF AN EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING GROUP ACTIVITY IN ACADEMIC COURSES.

2015

1 INTRODUCTION Professors of Psychology well know that the most of their students start attending academic courses intending Psychology, and psychological work too, in a not much realistic and strongly idealizing way. This happens, on the one hand, due to an unsatisfactory knowledge of the subject, on the other hand because of a marked discrepancy between the representation/image of the psychologist as presented by media and the one which is shared by the scientific and professional community. According to the representation given by media, for example, anyone in possession of strong empathic and interpretational skills – to be simply strengthened through academic studies – may pursue the c…
