Bleaching efficacy of at home 16% carbamide peroxide. A long-term clinical follow-up study.

2019

OBJECTIVE To assess the whitening efficacy of a 16% carbamide peroxidase (CP) gel after 42 months of clinical follow-up. MATERIALS AND METHODS A retrospective clinical study was carried out involving 95 participants. CP 16% was applied for 90 minutes a day for 4 weeks using individualized trays. Tooth color was assessed using spectrophotometry at baseline, 1 week after the end of treatment, and every 6 months until completing 42 months of follow-up. Color parameters were compared using analysis of variance for repeated measures. The analysis by teeth groups was performed using two-way ANOVA. RESULTS The mean baseline L* was 81.7 ± 5.2 versus 83.6 ± 8.8 after 42 months (P<.01). L* showed a d…

Partial Stabilization of Input-Output Contact Systems on a Legendre Submanifold

2017

This technical note addresses the structure preserving stabilization by output feedback of conservative input-output contact systems, a class of input-output Hamiltonian systems defined on contact manifolds. In the first instance, achievable contact forms in closed-loop and the associated Legendre submanifolds are analysed. In the second instance the stability properties of a hyperbolic equilibrium point of a strict contact vector field are analysed and it is shown that the stable and unstable manifolds are Legendre submanifolds. In the third instance the consequences for the design of stable structure preserving output feedback are derived: in closed-loop one may achieve stability only rel…

Scalable implementation of measuring distances in a Riemannian manifold based on the Fisher Information metric

2019

This paper focuses on the scalability of the Fisher Information manifold by applying techniques of distributed computing. The main objective is to investigate methodologies to improve two bottlenecks associated with the measurement of distances in a Riemannian manifold formed by the Fisher Information metric. The first bottleneck is the quadratic increase in the number of pairwise distances. The second is the computation of global distances, approximated through a fully connected network of the observed pairwise distances, where the challenge is the computation of the all sources shortest path (ASSP). The scalable implementation for the pairwise distances is performed in Spark. The scalable…

Energy-based fluid–structure model of the vocal folds

2020

AbstractLumped elements models of vocal folds are relevant research tools that can enhance the understanding of the pathophysiology of many voice disorders. In this paper, we use the port-Hamiltonian framework to obtain an energy-based model for the fluid–structure interactions between the vocal folds and the airflow in the glottis. The vocal fold behavior is represented by a three-mass model and the airflow is described as a fluid with irrotational flow. The proposed approach allows to go beyond the usual quasi-steady one-dimensional flow assumption in lumped mass models. The simulation results show that the proposed energy-based model successfully reproduces the oscillations of the vocal …

Tracking Control of Networked Multi-Agent Systems Under New Characterizations of Impulses and Its Applications in Robotic Systems

2016

This paper examines the problem of tracking control of networked multi-agent systems with multiple delays and impulsive effects, whose results are applied to mechanical robotic systems. Four kinds of impulsive effects are taken into account: 1) both the strengths of impulsive effects and the number of nodes injected with impulses are time dependent; 2) the strengths of impulsive effects occur according to certain probabilities and the number of nodes under impulsive control is time varying; 3) the strengths of impulses are time varying, whereas the number of nodes with impulses takes place according to certain probabilities; 4) both the strengths of impulses and the number of nodes with imp…

A port-Hamiltonian Fluid-Structure Interaction Model for the Vocal folds ⁎ ⁎This work was supported by CONICYT-PFCHA/2017-21170472, and AC3E CONICYT-…

2018

Abstract Fluid-structure interaction models are of special interest for studying the energy transfer between the moving fluid and the mechanical structure in contact. The vocal folds are an example of a fluid-structure system, where the mechanical structure is usually modeled as a mass-spring-damper system. In particular, the estimation of the collision forces of the vocal folds is of high interest in the diagnosis of phonotraumatic voice pathologies. In this context, the port-Hamiltonian modeling framework focuses on the energy flux in the model and the interacting forces. In this paper, we develop a port-Hamiltonian fluid-structure interaction model based on the interconnection methodolog…

Forecasting portfolio returns using weighted fuzzy time series methods

2016

We propose using weighted fuzzy time series (FTS) methods to forecast the future performance of returns on portfolios. We model the uncertain parameters of the fuzzy portfolio selection models using a possibilistic interval-valued mean approach, and approximate the uncertain future return on a given portfolio by means of a trapezoidal fuzzy number. Introducing some modifications into the classical models of fuzzy time series, based on weighted operators, enables us to generate trapezoidal numbers as forecasts of the future performance of the portfolio returns. This fuzzy forecast makes it possible to approximate both the expected return and the risk of the investment through the value and a…

Darboux integrable system with a triple point and pseudo-abelian integrals

2016

We study pseudo-abelian integrals associated with polynomial perturbations of Dar-boux integrable system with a triple point. Under some assumptions we prove the local boundedness of the number of their zeros. Assuming that this is the only non-genericity, we prove that the number of zeros of the corresponding pseudo-abelian integrals is bounded uniformly for nearby Darboux integrable foliations.

Periodic Controls in Step 2 Strictly Convex Sub-Finsler Problems

2020

We consider control-linear left-invariant time-optimal problems on step 2 Carnot groups with a strictly convex set of control parameters (in particular, sub-Finsler problems). We describe all Casimirs linear in momenta on the dual of the Lie algebra. In the case of rank 3 Lie groups we describe the symplectic foliation on the dual of the Lie algebra. On this basis we show that extremal controls are either constant or periodic. Some related results for other Carnot groups are presented. peerReviewed

Grading investment diversification options in presence of non-historical financial information

2021

Modern portfolio theory deals with the problem of selecting a portfolio of financial assets such that the expected return is maximized for a given level of risk. The forecast of the expected individual assets’ returns and risk is usually based on their historical returns. In this work, we consider a situation in which the investor has non-historical additional information that is used for the forecast of the expected returns. This implies that there is no obvious statistical risk measure any more, and it poses the problem of selecting an adequate set of diversification constraints to mitigate the risk of the selected portfolio without losing the value of the non-statistical information owne…
