The potential of the Phytotoxkit microbiotest for hazard evaluation of sediments in eutrophic freshwater ecosystems

The applicability of the Phytotoxkit microbiotest for toxicity assessment of sediments in eutrophic freshwater ecosystems was evaluated. Sediments were collected from Turawa dam reservoir (southwestern Poland) which, for years, has been subjected to a marked nutrient enrichment and heavy metal contamination. The test plant species were exposed to whole sediments, solid phases of sediments, and pore waters. Phytotoxicity was estimated on the basis of seed germination and root elongation measurements, combined into an overall germination index (GI). Gill anomalies of perch and roach from four lakes differing in water quality

This study examined gill anomalies of two common freshwater fish species, roach Rutilus rutilus and perch Perca fluviatilis, collected over five seasons in 1989–1990 from four lakes in central Finland. The lakes differed both in water quality and in fish parasite species composition. Particular attention was paid to the differences in chloride cell proliferation. Gill anomalies were generally more common and abundant in roach than in perch. Chloride cell proliferation was the most frequent histological change in roach but was that least often found in perch. Seasonality of two gill monogeneans from two freshwater fish from an oligotrophic lake in northeast Finland.

The seasonal occurrence of Dactylogyrus amphibothrium and Discocotyle sagittata from the gills of ruffe (Gymnocephalus cernuus) and whitefish (Coregonus acronius), respectively was studied in Lake Yli-Kitka, a large oligotrophic lake in Northeast Finland. The lake, located near the Arctic Circle, is ice-covered for 7-8 months of the year. The prevalence of D. amphibothrium infection was 70.7% and remained high throughout all size-classes of fish. The length distribution and developmental stages of the worms indicated two generations per year. Increased Parasite Abundance Associated with Reproductive Maturity of the Clam Anodonta piscinalis

Several studies on vertebrates have demonstrated that reproductive activities may increase the parasite load, but this has not been shown in invertebrate hosts. We studied abundance of a potentially harmful gill parasite, the ergasilid copepod Paraergasilus rylovi, from the freshwater bivalve host Anodonta piscinalis in relation to reproductive maturity of the host in the field. Effect of pH, iron and aluminum on survival of early life history stages of the endangered freshwater pearl mussel, Margaritifera margaritifera

Glochidium larvae and juveniles of the endangered freshwater pearl mussel Margaritifera margaritifera may be sensitive to low pH and metal exposure, but to our knowledge, no tolerance tests have been performed. Therefore, we exposed glochidia, fish-attached glochidia, and juveniles of the pearl mussel to low pH and increased iron (Fe) and aluminum (Al) by using realistic pH (6.0–4.5), Fe (0.5–2.0 mg L−1), and Al (0.25–1.0 mg L−1) levels periodically observed in this study site. Survival of glochidia decreased with decreasing pH, increasing Fe, and increasing Al, as well as with increasing Fe + Al concentration in a 72 h exposure. Seasonal changes in immunocompetence are predicted by the hypothesized trade-off between reproduction and self-maintenance, whereby immune function is a measure of self-maintenance and reproductive effort is seasonally dependent. Metallothionein in the freshwater gastropod Melanopsis dufouri chronically exposed to cadmium: A methodological approach

Previous studies have demonstrated that the use of differential pulse polarography (DPP) for metallothionein (MT) determination in marine gastropod tissues, particularly the digestive gland, requires taking into account the presence of heat-stable high molecular weight compounds that exhibit polarographic signal.
