Successful Foley catheter tamponade of an epigastric vessel trocar injury in a toddler – A case report

2021

Highlights • Epigastric vessel injury is a well recognized complication during laparoscopic trocar placement. • Precautionary measures to prevent trocar induced injuries should be implemented to lower the incidence of this complication. • If this complication is encountered, tamponade by Foley catheter placement is an effective measure to provide hemostasis. • Hemorrhage control using a Foley catheter is feasible even in small children and toddlers.

We review the differential diagnosis and treatment of retrovesical masses in men.During the last 8 years 21 male patients 3 to 79 years old (mean age 47.1) presented with symptoms or signs of a retrovesical mass. Rapid detection of an Angiotensin Type 2 Receptor Gene variant: no evidence for linkage and association with primary vesicoureteral reflux

Primary vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) affects approximately 1−2% of the general population and is a common cause of end-stage renal failure in children. VUR appears to have a genetic basis and several loci including the Angiotensin Type 2 Receptor Gene (AGTR2) on the X chromosome have been suggested. Using single-strand conformation analysis (SSCA) we typed 103 DNA samples from 17 families with two or more affected individuals for the presence of a splice site mutation in the AGTR2 gene. Linkage analysis revealed a parametric LOD score of −3.977 and a NPL-score of −6,522 by affected-only analysis. Our family-data do not support linkage of VUR to the AGTR2.

AIM. To evaluate the effects of asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) in renal arteries from portal hypertensive and cirrhotic rats. METHODS. Rat renal arteries from Sham (n = 15), pre-hepatic portal hypertension (PPVL; n = 15) and bile duct ligation and excision-induced cirrhosis (BDL; n = 15) were precontracted with norepinephrine, and additional contractions were induced with ADMA (10-6-10-3 mol/L), an endogenous inhibitor of nitric oxide (NO) synthase. The disease presentation of autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease (OMIM #263200, ARPKD) is highly variable and includes polycystic kidneys, pulmonary hypoplasia, and congenital hepatic fibrosis. The authors report an unusual case of ARPKD presenting with hepatosplenomegaly and cytopenia mimicking acute leukemia.

Color Doppler Ultrasound in Portal Hypertension

Portal hypertension is one of the most important causes of morbidity and mortality in cirrhotic patients. A color Doppler evaluation of the left gastric vein (LGV) has proven utility in the prediction of esophageal varices and variceal bleeding in patients with portal hypertension. The purpose of this review is to discuss the ultrasound evaluation, imaging findings, and clinical application of Doppler ultrasound in the assessment of the LGV. Knowledge of the color Doppler technique and imaging findings of the LGV may help clinicians improve the monitoring of portal hypertension and predict patients with a high risk of esophageal varices.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is characterized by an increased risk of kidney failure and end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Aging and comorbidities as cardiovascular diseases, metabolic disorders, infectious diseases, or tumors, might increase the risk of dialysis. In addition, genetic susceptibility factors might modulate kidney damage evolution. Based on their structural similarity, BPS may be obesogen like Bisphenol A in mice. Our objective was to determine the impact of BPS on lipid homeostasis in C57B1/6 mice after perinatal and chronic exposure. Background/Aim: To evaluate the effectiveness of enzalutamide in Italian patients with hormone-refractory metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer, progressing after chemotherapy with docetaxel plus prednisone. Patients and Methods: A total of 60 patients were enrolled. Anti-hyperuricemic and nephroprotective effects of extracts from Chaenomeles sinensis (Thouin) Koehne in hyperuricemic mice

Clinically, Chaenomeles sinensis (Thouin) Koehne (C. sinensis) has been used to treat hyperuricemia and gout. However, the exact mechanism of action is still unknown. In the present study, the ethyl acetate fraction of C. sinensis fruit extract (CSF-E) was separated. Potassium oxonate (PO)-induced hyperuricemic mice and normal mice were administered with CSF-E at 60, 120 and 180 mg kg-1, respectively for 7 days.
