Domesticating the future?: Citizen’s income discussion in Estonia
2018
ABSTRACTCitizen’s income is an idea that is currently gaining ground in many parts of the world. The prospect of disappearing jobs and social exclusion that the globalized world faces has given the...
The Effects of the Value-Added Tax on Revenue and Inequality
2019
This paper examines the impact of the introduction of the value-added tax on inequality and government revenues using newly released macro data. We present both conventional country fixed effect regressions and instrumental variable analyses, where VAT adoption is instrumented using the previous values of neighbouring countries’ VAT systems as an instrument. The results reveal – in contrast to earlier work – that the revenue consequences of the VAT have not been positive. The results indicate that income-based inequality has increased due to the VAT adoption, whereas consumption inequality has remained unaffected. Peer reviewed
Global Communication with Icons in Environmental Contexts
2016
Icons are small signs with fixed meanings. Icons are usually context specific. For example in the context of a hotel, the client can often find icons in hotel room books and safety guides. Scandic Hotel chain, for example, currently provides the manual for its safety system in 14 languages. There are at least two major shortcomings of this system: (1) in emergency or panic situations, it is very difficult to find your own language from the leaflet, and (2) there are no Asian languages. There is an obvious need for a global icon-based hotel safety language. In our paper, we introduce an icon-based model, language and mobile application for hotel safety. peerReviewed
IMI Prevention of Myopia and Its Progression
2021
The prevalence of myopia has markedly increased in East and Southeast Asia, and pathologic consequences of myopia, including myopic maculopathy and high myopia-associated optic neuropathy, are now some of the most common causes of irreversible blindness. Hence, strategies are warranted to reduce the prevalence of myopia and the progression to high myopia because this is the main modifiable risk factor for pathologic myopia. On the basis of published population-based and interventional studies, an important strategy to reduce the development of myopia is encouraging schoolchildren to spend more time outdoors. As compared with other measures, spending more time outdoors is the safest strategy…
Pelaaja-agentit jalkapalloilun globalisoitumisen ilmentäjinä Suomessa
2012
Suomalainen jalkapalloilu on globalisoitunut vauhdilla ensimmäisten ulkomaalaisten pelaajien tultua pääsarjaan 1970–luvun lopulla. 2000–luvulla kiinnostus on siirtynyt afrikkalaisiin pelaajiin, joiden määrä Veikkausliigassa on noussut merkittävästi. Vuonna 2010 Veikkausliigan ulkomaalaisista peräti 37 % oli afrikkalaisia pelaajia. 90-luvulla Bosmanpäätöksen myötä lisääntynyt pelaajatarjon…
Experimental Constraints on the Deep Magma Feeding System at StromboliVolcano, Italy
2009
International audience; New experiments have been performed on a high-K basalt (PST-9) from Stromboli volcano, Italy, to constrain the physical conditions of golden pumice magmas at their storage level and discuss their petrogenesis. Fluid-present, H2O- and CO2-bearing, near-liquidus experiments were performed at 11508C between 100 and 400MPa and under oxidizing conditions. Glasses were analyzed by Fourier transform IR spectroscopy and their H2O and CO2 concentrations compared with those in glass inclusions. Most glass inclusions cluster near the 200MPa isobar, suggesting entrapment at a depth of ~8 km. Golden pumice magmas have viscosities of 7.9 Pa s and densities of 2.48-2.57 g/cm3. Compo…
Cosmopolitanism as a Potential Theoretical Solution to the Challenges of Globalised Urbanisation
2019
This paper contributes to the effort to formulate strategies for approaching the challenges of twenty-first century “globalised urbanisation.” The paper hypothesises that cosmopolitanism might be seen as an option when trying to understand and resolve problems associated with globalised urbanisation within the scope of the United Nations’ Habitat III policy framework. In the context of the United Nations’ Habitat III (New Urban Agenda) policy framework, culture and cultural diversity are recognised as sources of enrichment for humanity and provide an important contribution to the sustainability of cities (UN-Habitat 2016:4). In addition, the policy framework supports the core aspect of cosm…

Maastohiihdon globalisoituminen talviolympialaisten menestyksen perusteella tarkasteltuna
2016
Heini Vesalainen (2016). Maastohiihdon globalisoituminen talviolympialaisten menestyksen perusteella tarkasteltuna. Liikuntakasvatuksen laitos, Jyväskylän yliopisto, liikunnan yhteiskuntatieteiden pro gradu -tutkielma, 69s.
Regulation of type 1 fimbriae synthesis and biofilm formation by the transcriptional regulator LrhA of Escherichia coli
2005
Type 1 fimbriae ofEscherichia colifacilitate attachment to the host mucosa and promote biofilm formation on abiotic surfaces. The transcriptional regulator LrhA, which is known as a repressor of flagellar, motility and chemotaxis genes, regulates biofilm formation and expression of type 1 fimbriae. Whole-genome expression profiling revealed that inactivation oflrhAresults in an increased expression of structural components of type 1 fimbriae. In vitro, LrhA bound to the promoter regions of the twofimrecombinases (FimB and FimE) that catalyse the inversion of thefimApromoter, and to the invertible element itself. TranslationallacZfusions with these genes and quantification offimEtranscript le…
