In physics, timbre is a complex phenomenon, like color. Musical timbres are given by the superposition of sinusoidal signals, corresponding to longitudinal acoustic waves. Colors are produced by the superposition of transverse electromagnetic waves in the domain of visible light. Regarding human perception, specific timbre variations provoke effects similar to color variations, for example, a rising tension or a relaxation effect. Musical chords and chord relations can be described through mathematics. Abstract permutations can be visualized through the Rubik’s cube, born as a pedagogical device [7,21]. Abelian antipowers in infinite words

Abstract An abelian antipower of order k (or simply an abelian k-antipower) is a concatenation of k consecutive words of the same length having pairwise distinct Parikh vectors. This definition generalizes to the abelian setting the notion of a k-antipower, as introduced in Fici et al. (2018) [7] , that is a concatenation of k pairwise distinct words of the same length. We aim to study whether a word contains abelian k-antipowers for arbitrarily large k. S. Holub proved that all paperfolding words contain abelian powers of every order (Holub, 2013 [8] ). We show that they also contain abelian antipowers of every order.

Evaluating Correlations in IoT Sensors for Smart Buildings

International audience; In this paper we introduce a dataset of environmental information obtained via indoor and outdoor sensors deployed in the SMART Infrastructure Facility of the University of Wollongong (Australia). The acquired dataset is also made open-sourced along with this paper. We also propose a novel approach based on an evolutionary algorithm to determine pairs of correlated sensors. We compare our approach with three other standard techniques on the same dataset: on average, the accuracy of the evolutionary method is about 62,92%. We also evaluate the computational time, assessing the suitability of the proposed pipeline for real-time applications.

AbstractWhen designing displays for the human senses, perceptual spaces are of great importance to give intuitive access to physical attributes. Similar to how perceptual spaces based on hue, saturation, and lightness were constructed for visual color, research has explored perceptual spaces for sounds of a given timbral family based on timbre, brightness, and pitch. An Evolution of the Non-Parameter Harris Affine Corner Detector: A Distributed Approach

A parallel version of a new automatic Harris-based corner detector is presented. A scheduler to dynamically and homogeneously distribute high computational workload on heterogeneous parallel architectures such as Grid systems has been implemented to speedup the whole procedure. Experimental results show the robustness of the underlying scheduler, which can be easily exploited in various automatic image analysis systems.

Investigating Proactive Search Support in Conversations

Conversations among people involve solving disputes, building common ground, and reinforce mutual beliefs and assumptions. Conversations often require external information that can support these human activities. In this paper, we study how a spoken conversation can be supported by a proactive search agent that listens to the conversation, detects entities mentioned in the conversation, and proactively retrieves and presents information related to the conversation. Piecewise planar underwater mosaicing

A commonly ignored problem in planar mosaics, yet often present in practice, is the selection of a reference homography reprojection frame where to attach the successive image frames of the mosaic. A bad choice for the reference frame can lead to severe distortions in the mosaic and can degenerate in incorrect configurations after some sequential frame concatenations. This problem is accentuated in uncontrolled underwater acquisition setups as those provided by AUVs or ROVs due to both the noisy trajectory of the acquisition vehicle — with roll and pitch shakes — and to the non-flat nature of the seabed which tends to break the planarity assumption implicit in the mosaic construction.
