2012

With the increase in Internet-enabled smartphone use, this problem can be resolved by adopting a mobile diabetes monitoring system. Most existing studies have focused on patients’ usability perceptions, whereas little attention has been paid to physicians’ intentions to adopt this technology. ObjectiveThe aim of the study was to evaluate the perceptions and user acceptance of mobile diabetes monitoring among Japanese physicians. MethodsA questionnaire survey of physicians was conducted in Japan. The structured questionna…

Do the mobile-rich get richer? Internet use, travelling and social differentiations in Finland

2014

This article investigates the daily travelling practices that are related to mobile-only, fixed-only and combined mobile/fixed use of the Internet, and the social differentiations that are related to these three ways of accessing the Internet. Survey data ( N = 612) collected from Finland in 2011 are analysed. The article shows that mobile-only Internet use is not associated with particularly diverse or frequent daily travelling practices, whereas combined mobile/fixed use is. Mobile-only Internet users are, in fact, in a relatively disadvantaged position – compared with other users, they are more typically unemployed and their household income is lower. The mobility of Internet access as …

Impact of the community structure on the dynamics of complex networks

2023

Networks are everywhere. We encounter them daily in our lives, through our social interactions, how we come up with decisions in our brain, to having phone calls, conducting financial transactions, and traveling from one place to another. Individual actions are influenced by their environment, which is, in turn, influenced by the network's topology. Notably, individuals may change their actions, ideas, or opinions to conform to the aspirations of a particular social group. In the same vein, the spread of a virus can take a certain course if the network's structure induces specific pathways for expansion. In such scenarios, communities substantially impact the evolution of the dynamics. They…

A Digital Twin predictive maintenance framework of air handling units based on automatic fault detection and diagnostics

2022

The building industry consumes the most energy globally, making it a priority in energy efficiency initiatives. Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems create the heart of buildings. Stable air handling unit (AHU) functioning is vital to ensuring high efficiency and extending the life of HVAC systems. This research proposes a Digital Twin predictive maintenance framework of AHU to overcome the limitations of facility maintenance management (FMM) systems now in use in buildings. Digital Twin technology, which is still at an initial stage in the facility management industry, use Building Information Modeling (BIM), Internet of things (IoT) and semantic technologies to create…

Towards a pragmatics of weblogs

2007

The weblog has emerged as one of the most dynamic means of Internet communication, in which users upload whatever piece of information they consider might arouse other users’ attention. Many articles and books have already addressed this new communicative phenomenon, but so far the weblog has not been addressed in purely cognitive-pragmatic terms. This article provides a first relevance-theoretic pragmatic analysis of the discourse of weblogs and their communicative qualities and limitations.

2021
