Increasing the Astrophysical Reach of the Advanced Virgo Detector via the Application of Squeezed Vacuum States of Light
2019
Current interferometric gravitational-wave detectors are limited by quantum noise over a wide range of their measurement bandwidth. One method to overcome the quantum limit is the injection of squeezed vacuum states of light into the interferometer's dark port. Here, we report on the successful application of this quantum technology to improve the shot noise limited sensitivity of the Advanced Virgo gravitational-wave detector. A sensitivity enhancement of up to 3.2±0.1 dB beyond the shot noise limit is achieved. This nonclassical improvement corresponds to a 5%-8% increase of the binary neutron star horizon. The squeezing injection was fully automated and over the first 5 months of the thi…
Notes on the genus Rasilinus Mazur, 2016 (Curculionidae: Curculioninae, Eugnomini), with the description of a new species from New Caledonia
2017
New data on the genus Rasilinus (Curculioninae, Eugnomini) are provided, including the description of a new species—Rasilinus bifasciatus sp. n., from New Caledonia. Illustrations and SEM photographs of male external morphology, terminalia, and a colour habitus of the adult of the new species are provided.
Glaciolimniskie nogulumi Lielauces-Zebrenes glaciodepresijā
2015

Identification and quantification of phosphatidylcholines containing very long chain polyunsaturated fatty acid (VLC-PUFA) in bovine and human retina…
2010
The retina is one of the vertebrate tissues with the highest content in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). A large proportion of the retinal glycerophospholipids, especially those found in photoreceptor membranes, are dipolyunsaturated molecular species. Among them, dipolyunsaturated phosphatidylcholine molecular species are known to contain very long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (VLC-PUFA) from the n-3 and n-6 series and having 24 to 36 carbon atoms (C24 to C36) and four to six double bonds. Recent interest in the role of VLC-PUFA arose from the findings that a protein named ELOngation of Very Long chain fatty acids 4 (ELOVL4) is involved in their biosynthesis and that mutations in E…

In the meta-theoretical framework, a full scientific theory is a complex hierarchical-network structure which covers three levels: 1) a set of ontological, epistemological-methodological and axiological assumptions (the philosophical basis of a theory); 2) a set of highly abstract theoretical notions and general theorems which compose the image of the world; 3) a set of notions and descriptive theorems which assert something directly about the object being examined (the empirical part). The author considers the first two levels of the full theory of style, i.e., he focuses on its philosophical part and chooses the notion of subject from the second level. He accepts, as the starting point, h…
Heavy ions at the Future Circular Collider
2016
The Future Circular Collider (FCC) Study is aimed at assessing the physics potential and the technical feasibility of a new collider with centre-of-mass energies, in the hadron-hadron collision mode, seven times larger than the nominal LHC energies. Operating such machine with heavy ions is an option that is being considered in the accelerator design studies. It would provide, for example, Pb-Pb and p-Pb collisions at sqrt{s_NN} = 39 and 63 TeV, respectively, per nucleon-nucleon collision, with integrated luminosities above 30 nb^-1 per month for Pb-Pb. This is a report by the working group on heavy-ion physics of the FCC Study. First ideas on the physics opportunities with heavy ions at th…
