Designing an x-ray baffle for stray-light reduction at the focal plane of the Wide Field Imager on board EDGE

We exploited a ray-tracing Montecarlo code to investigate the effects of stray-light on the performances of the Wide Field Imager (FoV = 1.5 deg) on board the EDGE satellite. We found non negligible stray-light contamination up to ~ 8 deg off-axis angles. We discuss the benefits of a baffle in order to reduce this contamination, that would strongly affect the telescope sensitivity, and present two possible baffle designs based on results of simulations.

Axial resonance of periodic patterns by using a Fresnel biprism.

This paper proposes a method for the generation of high-contrast localized sinusoidal fringes with spatially noncoherent illumination and relatively high light throughput. The method, somehow similar to the classical Lau effect, is based on the use of a Fresnel biprism. It has some advantages over previous methods for the noncoherent production of interference fringes. One is the flexibility of the method, which allows the control of the fringe period by means of a simple axial shift of the biprism. Comparison and uncertainty evaluation of different calibration protocols and ionization chambers for low-energy surface brachytherapy dosimetry

Purpose: A surface electronic brachytherapy (EBT) device is in fact an x-ray source collimated with specific applicators. Low-energy (<100 kVp) x-ray beam dosimetry faces several challenges that need to be addressed. A number of calibration protocols have been published for x-ray beam dosimetry. The media in which measurements are performed are the fundamental difference between them. Coherent Light Harvesting through Strong Coupling to Confined Light

When photoactive molecules interact strongly with confined light modes, new hybrid light–matter states may form: the polaritons. These polaritons are coherent superpositions of excitations of the molecules and of the cavity photon. Recently, polaritons were shown to mediate energy transfer between chromophores at distances beyond the Forster limit. Here we explore the potential of strong coupling for light-harvesting applications by means of atomistic molecular dynamics simulations of mixtures of photoreactive and non-photo-reactive molecules strongly coupled to a single confined light mode. Possibility of a dark matter interpretation for the excess in isotropic radio emission reported by ARCADE.

The ARCADE 2 Collaboration has recently measured an isotropic radio emission which is significantly brighter than the expected contributions from known extra-galactic sources. The simplest explanation of such excess involves a ``new'' population of unresolved sources which become the most numerous at very low (observationally unreached) brightness. We investigate this scenario in terms of synchrotron radiation induced by weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) annihilations or decays in extra-galactic halos. Intriguingly, for light-mass WIMPs with a thermal annihilation cross section, the level of expected radio emission matches the ARCADE observations.

The role of synchrotron self-absorption in the late radio emission of SN1993J

The standard model for radio supernovae considers that the observed synchrotron radio emission arises from the high-energy shell that results from the strong interaction between the expanding supernova ejecta and the circumstellar medium. This emission is considered to be only partially absorbed by ionized thermal electrons in the circumstellar wind of the progenitor star. Based on a study of the radio light curves of the type II supernova SN1993J, we present evidence of synchrotron self-absorption. Results from DROXO. III. Observation, source list and X-ray properties of sources detected in the "Deep Rho Ophiuchi XMM-Newton Observation"

X-rays from very young stars are powerful probes to investigate the mechanisms at work in the very first stages of the star formation and the origin of X-ray emission in very young stars. We present results from a 500 ks long observation of the Rho Ophiuchi cloud with a XMM-Newton large program named DROXO, aiming at studying the X-ray emission of deeply embedded Young Stellar Objects (YSOs). The data acquired during the DROXO program were reduced with SAS software, and filtered in time and energy to improve the signal to noise of detected sources; light curves and spectra were obtained. Compact dielectric reflective elements II Multichannel filter of closely spaced spectral bands

The optical design of an interference wedge filter providing the simultaneous separation of a number of closely spaced spectral bands is studied. Multiple reflections of the incident collimated beam within the wedge are initiated, each of them characterized by a different angle of incidence and consequently by specific spectral parameters of the transmitted band. Model calculations based on the measured angular dependences of filter transmission parameters have been performed. The design is proposed for applications in optical communications (wavelength division demultiplexing), analytical spectroscopy (minipolychromators), color analysis, and similar areas.

GRB 070311: a direct link between the prompt emission and the afterglow

We present prompt gamma-ray, early NIR/optical, late optical and X-ray observations of the peculiar GRB 070311 discovered by INTEGRAL, in order to gain clues on the mechanisms responsible for the prompt gamma-ray pulse as well as for the early and late multi-band afterglow of GRB 070311. We fitted with empirical functions the gamma-ray and optical light curves and scaled the result to the late time X-rays. The H-band light curve taken by REM shows two pulses peaking 80 and 140 s after the peak of the gamma-ray burst and possibly accompanied by a faint gamma-ray tail. Remarkably, the late optical and X-ray afterglow underwent a major rebrightening between 3x10^4 and 2x10^5 s after the burst …

Status of the EPIC thin and medium filters on-board XMM-Newton after more than 10 years of operation II: analysis of in-flight data

After more than ten years of operation of the EPIC camera on board the X-ray observatory XMM-Newton we have reviewed the status of its thin and medium filters by performing both analysis of data collected in-flight and laboratory measurements on on-ground back-up filters. We have investigated the status of the EPIC thin and medium filters by performing an analysis of the optical loading in the PN offset maps to gauge variations in the optical and UV transmission of the filters. We both investigated repeated observations of single optically bright targets and performed a statistical analysis of the extent of loading versus visual magnitude at different epochs.
