Linguistic Therapy of Evaluation and the Assimilation Model

This theoretical article examines possible points of convergence between the assimilation model and linguistic therapy of evaluation (LTE), insofar as the former describes the process of change and the latter, as a form of cognitive therapy, considers the therapeutic conditions that facilitate it. In particular, the argument focuses first on why a voice becomes problematic from a LTE conceptualization. Second, the article explains how the therapeutic aims of LTE could contribute to a linguistic perspective on the assimilation model, focusing on how a dialogue between voices in the self could occur. This article describes the treatment of Gabriel, 24, an undergraduate student suffering from performance anxiety. His main symptoms were heart palpitations, aching muscles, inability to relax, nervousness, worry, and negative anticipation about performance in various classes. The treatment applied was 13 sessions of linguistic therapy of evaluation (LTE), a variety of cognitive therapy based on the theory of general semantics. Four operations of nominal concretization are crucial for presenting a typology of classifier languages: individualization, classification, relationalization (possession), and referentialization. The first three of these operations are at work in the Hmong classifier system. Classifiers in Sinitic languages: From individuation to definiteness-marking

Abstract This article examines the distribution and interpretation of the bare classifier phrase [Cl+N] in three Sinitic languages of Mandarin, Wu and Cantonese. We show that [Cl+N] can be interpreted as definite or indefinite depending on pragmatic factors related to information structure and word order. Syntactically, we claim that indefinite [Cl+N] has the maximal projection of ClP and that definite [Cl+N] is a DP, where the D head is filled by the classifier via Cl-to-D raising. Semantically, we claim that indefinite [Cl+N] is predicative, denoting sets of atomic entities and that definite [Cl+N] is derived from indefinite [Cl+N] by lifting it from predicates to Generalized Quantifiers.…

The article analyses Polish oikonyms ending in -atka, discussing whether this ending is a suffix, i.e. -at-ka, or simply appears to be one. Based on the method of morphological division, the findings suggest the existence of two distinctive groups of oikonyms: those with the suffix -at-ka, and those with three extended variants of this suffix: -ow-at-ka, -aw-at-ka and -ew-at-ka.

Abstract In this paper, we analyse the close relationship between the European higher education area (EHEA), the common European framework of reference for languages and intercultural communicative competence (ICC) and show how the implementation of ICC in foreign language teaching can become an essential tool to acquire the full achievement of the EHEA. En este articulo analizamos la estrecha relacion entre el Espacio Europeo de Educacion Superior, el Marco Europeo de las Lenguas y la competencia comunicativa intercultural y mostrar como la implementacion de la CCI en la ensenanza de una lengua extranjera puede convertirse en una herramienta esencial para conseguir los objetivos del EEES.

Translation in foreign language teaching: A case study from a functional perspective

Abstract There is little research available on using translation as a tool to develop students’ translation and communicative competence in foreign language programmes. This paper aims to fill this gap by reporting the results of a localized empirical study, using a functionalist theoretical framework. After a pre-translation source text analysis of three texts with EU topics, data were collected by two methods: a linguistic analysis of the student translations of these texts to identify and analyze the most common translation problems, and semi-structured interviews to explore their individual difficulties.
