ChemInform Abstract: Total Synthesis of (.+-.)-Scopolamine: Challenges of the Tropane Ring.

2016

Scopolamine was synthesized using 6,7-dehydrotropine as a key intermediate. Rhodium-catalyzed [4 + 3] cycloaddition chemistry and a modified Robinson–Schopf reaction were each independently evaluated for their utility in constructing the tropane core. Both synthetic approaches gave comparable overall yields.

When is More Really More? The Effect of Brands on Choice Overload in Adolescents

2021

Research on choice overload with adult participants has shown that the presence of a brand significantly mitigates the phenomenon. The aim of this study is to investigate whether these findings can be expanded to a population of adolescents, where it has already been shown that choice overload occurs in a similar way as adults. We present evidence from two studies that when facing either a large or a small amount of choice options that are associated with brand names, choice overload disappears among adolescents. Conversely, when no brands are associated to the choice options, adolescents report choice overload, that is a greater dissatisfaction, difficulties, and regret with larger (versus…

How much choice is "good enough"? Moderators of information and choice overload

2021

In today’s world, people face an abundance of information and a great number of choices both in important domains, such as health care, retirement, and education, and in less important domains, such as the choice of breakfast cereal or chocolate. Choice overload and information overload have strong negative effects on many important decision- making aspects such as processing and using information, the motivation to act, the quality of choices, and post- choice feelings, which are discussed in Chapter 43 in this volume in more detail. However, small choice and information sets are not always optimal either. Several variables– – such as information usage, decision accuracy, motivation to cho…

Smart Micro-Grid Performance using Renewable Energy

2020

The aim of this research is to determine the performance of PV panels, wind turbines, battery storage and power imported from the grid to the system which will ensure a reliable energy supply, as well as the technical feasibility of a smart microgrid system. Indonesia’s renewable energy potential for electricity reaches 443 GW, where solar energy is the largest potential, namely 4.8 KWh m–2 or equivalent to 112 000 GWp, but only 10 MWp has been utilized. The most basic problem in this system, namely, the uncertainty of wind energy and solar energy, one of the most vital factors in the optimal size of a renewable energy-based smart microgrid system is the reliability of the system being buil…

Behavioral Restriction Determines Left Attentional Bias: Preliminary Evidences From COVID-19 Lockdown

2021

International audience; During the COVID-19 lockdown, individuals were forced to remain at home, hence severely limiting the interaction within environmental stimuli, reducing the cognitive load placed on spatial competences. The effects of the behavioral restriction on cognition have been little examined. The present study is aimed at analyzing the effects of lockdown on executive function prominently involved in adapting behavior to new environmental demands. We analyze non-verbal fluency abilities, as indirectly providing a measure of cognitive flexibility to react to spatial changes. Sixteen students (mean age 20.75; SD 1.34), evaluated before the start of the lockdown (T1) in a battery…

Cognitive Load and Learning in the Study of Multiple Documents

2018

This study had two main purposes. First, to test how the availability of documents in multiple document reading might affect students’ levels of cognitive load. Secondly, to develop an instrument that captures the different sources of load when working with multiple documents. A total of 125 secondary school students read four short texts on transgenic foods and subsequently responded to an open-ended question that required them to write an essay expressing their personal stance towards the topic. Participants in the experimental treatment condition (n = 54) were allowed to go back to the texts any time during the essay task, whereas their peers in the control condition (n = 71) were not al…

Computable majorants of the limit load in Hencky’s plasticity problems

2018

Abstract We propose a new method for analyzing the limit (safe) load of elastoplastic media governed by the Hencky plasticity law and deduce fully computable bounds of this load. The main idea of the method is based on a combination of kinematic approach and new estimates of the distance to the set of divergence free fields. We show that two sided bounds of the limit load are sharp and the computational efficiency of the method is confirmed by numerical experiments.

Multi-objective optimization for computation offloading in mobile-edge computing

2017

Mobile-edge cloud computing is a new cloud platform to provide pervasive and agile computation augmenting services for mobile devices (MDs) at anytime and anywhere by endowing ubiquitous radio access networks with computing capabilities. Although offloading computations to the cloud can reduce energy consumption at the MDs, it may also incur a larger execution delay. Usually the MDs have to pay cloud resource they used. In this paper, we utilize queuing theory to bring a thorough study on the energy consumption, execution delay and price cost of offloading process in a mobile-edge cloud system. Specifically, both wireless transmission and computing capabilities are explicitly and jointly co…

Reducing whole-body vibration exposure in backhoe loaders by education of operators

2012

Author's version of an article published in the journal: International Journal of Industrial Ergonomics. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.ergon.2012.03.001 Whole-body vibration is a health hazard for operators of construction machinery. The level of whole-body vibration exposure on the operator is governed by three different factors; performance of the suspension system of the machine, planning of the work and the skills of the operator. In this research work it is investigated whether there is a potential in bringing down the level of whole-body vibration exposure by educating operators of backhoe loaders. This is carried out by an experimental setup.
